A review of the comic book inspired Hellboy slot from Microgaming
Although perhaps best remembered by the modern generation from the two films directed by Guillermo del Toro in 2004 and 2008, Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Ron Perlman starred as the eponymous hero charged with the task of protecting mankind as part of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense.
A new film based on Hellboy is due for release in January 2019 with David Harbour as the new face of the villain, who is perhaps most famous for his oversized right hand which is made of stone and known as the Right Hand of Doom.
If you can't wait until the new film hits cinemas, then the good news is that you don't have to as there is a Microgaming slot of the same name available to play right now and which has a sizeable cash prize available to be won if you are lucky enough.
So how does the Hellboy slot shape up? Let's take a closer look at this demon of a game and find out for ourselves.

One of the nicest and most striking features of the Hellboy slot is that it is set up very much in a comic-book style, which harks back to the characters origins with Dark Horse Comics back in August 1993. Add to this clever use of music and sound effects throughout the slot, in particular on the bonus features and the slot certainly looks and sounds the part.
There are five reels in play and they are set against a silhouette of a city backdrop but with some ominous tentacles on the top right of the screen. The m main controls of the slot are on the right of the reels and you can spin from as little as 0.20 per spin up to a maximum of 50.00 per spin.
I love the way the slot retains the comic book feel throughout the symbols on the reel and in the bonus features and I think it has a particularly striking look because of it. Add to that some imaginative bonus games, that fit the Hellboy narrative very nicely, and you have a slot which has been very well thought out in terms of presentation.
What is on the reels?
There are a number of different symbols on the reels. The smallest value wins come from the playing card symbols, which range from 10 through to the Ace. Better value wins come from the different characters that are part of the Hellboy universe. These characters include the Professor, Johan Krauss, Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman, who offer you the chance to win between 500x your line bet and 2,000 times your line bet if you can land five of the same symbol across the lines.
The best paying standard symbol however is Hellboy himself who offers a chance to win up to a 5,000x multiplier of your bet with up to five symbols across a pay line.
There are two other symbols on the reels, a Wild and a Scatter and these unlock a couple of the key bonus features of the slot as we shall explore below.
The Hellboy logo is the Wild symbol in the game and this serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it can substitute for any of the standard symbols outlined above to help create additional winning lines and the more Wilds you land on a spin, then the better chance you have of triggering either more than one win, greater value wins or both.
However, you can also land the top jackpot prize in the Hellboy slot of 10,000x your stake by landing five of the Wild symbols across the reels on a single pay line.
Another nice touch is that any win in the base game that is completed by a Hellboy Wild will also see a 2x multiplier applied to the win.
Free Spins features
Unlike most Microgaming slots that have Free Spins and Scatter symbols, the Free Spins game in Hellboy the slot is not unlocked by the Scatter symbol. Instead if you land scatters across the reel you will win a prize of up to 500x your bet and if you manage to hit three or more scatters then you trigger the unique 'Underworld Bonus feature.
In this feature, Hellboy heads down into the sewers to try and find the Lost Relic of Power. Unfortunately, this relic is located down a maze of holes underground. For each level, Hellboy needs to pick which passage to take. If he picks the clear passage, then he will move onto the next level. If he picks a passage with a beast, then he will have to battle the beast to see if he can progress. If he finds a blocked passage however the bonus game ends.
If you can guide Hellboy through all four levels, then you will receive a bonus prize at the end of it. The higher the level you reach of the bonus and the more of Hellboy's companions you can find, then the bigger the value of your prize.
That doesn't mean that the Hellboy slot does not offer Free Spins, it most certainly does but the Free Spins bonus are triggered at random on any spin. When Hellboy runs across the reels, this will trigger the bonus game and you will then receive 10 Free Spins and at the start of the bonus, you can have up to three symbols on screen turn into Sticky Wilds remaining in place for the bonus.
Best feature of the Hellboy slot
I think there are several aspects to the Hellboy slot that mark this game out as better than most. Firstly, I think the presentation is superb and really innovative and works superbly well with this comic book hero. Secondly, the bonus features are well thought out with the Scatter-triggered bonus game in the sewers under the city a particular highlight, and the potential for some sizeable wins are there.
The Free Spins bonus is also potentially lucrative, especially with those Sticky Wilds, but it can take a while to trigger this bonus feature.
Hellboy wasn't really rated by too many slots fans when it was first released but I think this is a very underrated slot that has excellent production values and a genuinely exciting base game and some fabulous bonus features that are well worth a closer look. If you like film or comic book slots in particular, then this is one slot that you should definitely take a closer look at.
