Mega Moolah jackpot slots: When is the best time to play?

With the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot top prize, the Mega jackpot, increasing at a speedy rate since the last trigger on the 19th September 2020, we have seen the prize pool increase from around 1.8 million just after the last jackpot prize win, to the current figure which, at the time of writing, stands at 5.8 million.

In fact, the jackpot is growing at a rapid rate of around 100,000 per day, and that means that in the space of a couple of weeks or so, the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot prize could well eclipse the amount offered by the current highest value progressive jackpot prize on the Microgaming network, the Wowpot-linked progressive prizes (which currently stands at just over 8.3 million).

Of course, those figures don't take into account the 'acceleration' factor that occurs whenever the Mega Moolah jackpot starts to increase to larger amounts. What tends to happen is that these larger jackpot prizes, especially on a game like Mega Moolah which has already paid out seven top jackpot prize winners in 2020, attract more players. These players tend to play more spins on the slot and as a result, the rate at which the progressive jackpot increases, also speeds up.

When the jackpot starts to get to around the 10 million mark, as it has on a several occasions now, it is not unusual to see the amount of money that the jackpot increases by per day speed up, sometimes getting to increases of around 200,000 or even 250,000 per day. Furthermore, the higher that the jackpot grows, then generally the more money is contributed to it each day.

So as we stand on the brink of another possible acceleration of the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot prize, we decided to pose one of the most common questions players may wonder to themselves when playing the game.

Namely, when is the best time to play for the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot slot and is there a time which, conversely, is not the best time to play?

It is a good question because you would think there is a simple and logical answer to both questions. You'd think it was best to play Mega Moolah sometime after the last jackpot win when the jackpot prize has grown considerably and you'd think that maybe a poorer time to play would be just after a jackpot win. Is that always the case?

Let's take a closer look and see what the data tells us, starting with the worst time to play a Mega Moolah slot.

The worst time to play Mega Moolah slots

The first thing we need to say is that the notion that it is wise to avoid playing Mega Moolah slots after they have just been won is, unfortunately, a fallacy. There are two key reasons for this. The first is that the Mega Moolah jackpot is completely random. It can be awarded at any time, on any spin to any player and the time that has past between the last jackpot win does not impact on this whatsoever.

The second reason that this is clearly not the case is down to the evidence. There have been a number of times that the Mega Moolah jackpot has been won in quick succession, say in the space of a month. The first time this occurred was May 2013, when the jackpot was won twice in the space of seven days, on the 3rd and 10th of May that year. We then saw three winners in the space of 12 days in June 2014 (winners on the 12th, 18th and 24th) and we had two winners on the 5th and 15th November in 2016.

However, the real data that puts the final nail in this rumour's coffin comes from the 22nd May 2017 and the 19th June 2017. Within the space of that 28-day period, the Mega Moolah jackpot was won four times and incredibly, it was won on the same day twice in that period, twice on the 22nd May and twice on the 19th June. With just over an hour between the two wins on the 19th June.

Since then we have seen wins a day apart in April 2018 and March 2019, plus three wins in May 2020 on the 8th, 24th and 27th of the month, plus two wins in September 2020 (6th and 19th).

So as you can see, the way the game is set up and the data shows us that you can win the Mega Moolah jackpot right after a previous trigger. So the notion that you should avoid playing just after a win, is incorrect.

So, can we use the data we have more positively to suggest when a good time is to play for the Mega Moolah jackpot? Let's take a closer look and see what it suggests.

When is a good time to play for the Mega Moolah jackpot prize?

Now, players will always want to play for the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot prize when it reaches a large amount of money. That is understandable as the amount of money you can win makes the slot hugely attractive to many players. But is there anything in the data that can assist us in deciding when else we should target our play?

We have already noted that the jackpot size and when it was last won does not influence whether a jackpot can be won or not, but there are some nice anomalies in the data which do suggest there are certain times of the year, certain months, and even certain times of the day that tend to produce more winners than others.

Let's take a look at some of the headline data for this.

Jackpot win amounts

  • 1m to 6 million - 46 jackpot triggers
  • 6 million to 20 million - 20 jackpot triggers

The first thing we can see here is that you are more than twice as likely to win a jackpot prize when the jackpot is between 1m and 6m than you are above that amount. Of course, this makes perfect sense as the jackpot is seeded at 1 million (British pounds) and it will spend much more time between these amounts than it will at over 6 million.

It does also show that while bigger jackpot wins on Mega Moolah are possible and have been landed (we have had ten winners of over 10 million confirmed on the slot), these tend to be the exception, rather than the rule.

Seasons & months

  • Winter winners (Dec - Feb) - 10 winners
  • Spring winners (Mar - May) - 23 winners
  • Summer winners (Jun - Aug) - 15 winners
  • Autumn winners (Sep - Nov) - 19 winners

We can see here that the winter and summer months tend to produce fewer winners than either the spring or autumn, although you could argue that these times also coincide with the longer holiday periods (Summer holidays, Christmas and New Year etc) which could impact how often people play the game.

Let's break this data down a little further to focus on individual months.

  • May - 11 winners
  • June - 9 winners
  • April, September, November - 7 winners

What is interesting here is that May has produced 11 winners, which is many more than the likes of July (which also has 31 days) but which has produced just 2 winners, as has February. June is second with 9 winners, with three other months also producing seven winners.

What is notable here is that the period from April through to June is the best time to play the game as these three months have produced 27 winners between them in that period. In contrast, from January to March, there have been just 11 winners in that period, 16 winners from October to December and 13 winners from July to September.

Dates

There have been a number of dates in the calendar where the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot has been won more than once.

  • November 15 - Three wins
  • June 17th, 19th, 24th and May 22nd and 24th and September 6th - Two wins

So it is clear that November 15th is the luckiest day in terms of Mega Moolah wins, although the period from June 17th to 24th has produced a total of seven winners (with one winner on the 18th June as well as the six winners outlined on the three dates above).

Time of Day

  • 8pm to 9pm - 8 winners
  • 11pm to Midnight - 5 winners
  • 9-10am, 5-6pm, 6-7pm - 4 winners
  • AM - 26 winners
  • PM - 42 winners

So if we pull all this data together then it would appear the best time to play Mega Moolah would be the following periods:

In the early evening from around 5pm to 11.59pm (CET), when the jackpot is between 1 million and 6 million in value from the following dates:

Either the periods from the 17th to 24th June, or from May 22nd to 27th or the 15th November.

And to finish off, most wins have tended to come on the original Mega Moolah slot, but recently we have seen more wins on other games (notably Absolootly Mad and Atlantean Treasures), so that data may well slowly be altering with the introduction of new games.

So now you know the optimal times to play Mega Moolah progressive jackpot slots based on the data but one thing to remember with any randomly awarded prize is that past-performance is no indicator of future performance and the next winner could just as likely arrive at any other time and place as the ones suggested above.
