A review of the Village People Macho Moves slot
If you have ever been to a disco before in your life, and let's face it, most of us will have been, then there are a few songs that are guaranteed to get the dance floor packed with people.
Tina Turner's The Best is always a favourite, as is Black Lace's Agadoo but the undoubted king of the dance floor when it comes to instantly familiar disco tracks are the Village People.
Their hits include Y.M.C.A, Macho Man, Go West and In the Navy and you will be delighted to know that they are all part of this brand new slot by Fortune Factory Studios in an exclusive game for Microgaming.
The game was previewed at ICE 2019 earlier in the year and it has been eagerly awaited since, so have Fortune Factory delivered a game every bit as memorable and enjoyable as all the Village People's famous hit songs? We decided to take a closer look to find out.

As you would expect with a slot based on a famous pop group, all six of the Village People are shown on the reels in their famous guises, the construction worker, cowboy, policeman, native American, biker and the sailor. Alongside the disco themed look of the slot, which is fantastically done by Fortune Factor, a selection of five of the Village People's most famous hits, instrumental versions of them initially, can be played as you spin the reels.
The animations when you land wins and when you trigger bonuses are very nicely done and have a lovely 70s Disco feel. There are also some lovely subtle touches such as the Village People dancing in time to the tune, tapping their toes or similar. All in all, Fortune Factory have done a fantastic job realising this slot, which must have been a tricky one to get right and they deserve all the more credit for that.
What is on the reels?
There are just nine standard symbols on the reels in the Village People Macho Moves slot. They begin with the four lower value symbols, which are the four playing card symbols which pay out in increasing value from Club to Diamond to Heart to Spade. Wins range from small wins of 1/5 of your bet for three on a pay line up to 3.5x your bet for six across the reels.
The five higher value symbols on the reels are all items taken from the 1970s Disco scene and include some platform shoes, big sunglasses, vinyl records, 8-track cassettes and the highest value standard symbol is the Microphone. Wins on these symbols range from 0.5x your total bet up to 25x your total bet.
What is good is that despite having just 15 pay lines on the 6-reels, you do tend to win relatively frequently and you can win a good variety of prizes, meaning that although this looks like it will be a slot that is tough to win on, in actual fact, you win relatively frequently.
The other symbols on the reels link in with the bonus features of the game and we'll explore these in more detail below.
There are two types of Wilds on the reel. The standard Wild is the disco ball and this acts as a substitute with the standard symbols, allowing you to land more or better value wins. You can also land these across the reels to land the biggest value prize in the base game of 250x your bet when you land six across the reels on a single pay line.
Wilds can be stacked three high and of course, the more Wilds you land on the reels, then the greater the value of your prize is likely to be.
Alongside the standard Wild is the VP Wild which is slightly different colour and design to the standard Wild. When you land this symbol, it will turn the two symbols above and below it Wild on the reel and can be used as a standard Wild to land wins as outlined above.
However, when you land a VP wild, you also light up one of the lights on the reel of the Village People band member. When you light five of these lights, you will trigger the Free Spins bonus game linked to that band member, with each game being different to the other in terms of number of spins and bonus features.
Free Spins features
When you trigger enough VP Wilds to fill the VP Wild Meter for one of the Village People band members, you will launch the bonus game associated with that band member. There are six in total and these are outlined below:
- Reel 1 - Construction Workers Macho Move Feature - You receive 5 Free Spins with a random multiplier of between 2x and 20x applied to each free spin
- Reel 2 - Cowboy's Macho Move Feature - 5 Free Spins with randomly assigned 2 to 12 Wilds added to the reels on each free spin.
- Reel 3 - Policeman Macho Move Feature - 5 Free Spins this time with entire reels turned Wild. You can turn between 2 and 4 reels completely Wild on each spin.
- Reel 4 - Native American Macho Move Feature - 5 Free Spins with the 5th and 6th reels Wild on the first Free Spin and then the two Wild reels move one step to the left with each additional Free Spin.
- Reel 5 - Biker Macho Move Feature - 5 Free Spins with one of the lower value standard symbols replaced with one of the higher value symbols on the reel.
- Reel 6 - Sailor's Macho Move Feature - 5 Free Spins with 1-3 Wilds locking in place across every Free Spin.
Best feature of the Village People Macho Moves slot
It's always the sign of a great slot when you can think of several things that you love about the game and want to include in the best feature of the game and this is definitely the case with the Village People Macho Moves slot. The sound and graphics are absolutely brilliant and the way the Village People kick in singing the song when you land big value wins, or trigger a bonus feature, highlights the reward and is a real delight. The humour in the slot is subtle but nicely done and the fact it is a medium variance game means it won't chew through your bankroll. The bonuses are good fun too, if a little time consuming to trigger, but the fact that the game will remember your progress is a big help. All in all, there is so much to love about this game we are convinced it will be a sure-fire hit.
Village People Macho Moves is an incredible slot. Not only does it look and sound spectacular, but the design team have brought to life the humour and enjoyment of the band and the 70s Disco scene quite superbly. Add to that a genuinely playable slot that is packed to the rim with bonus features and some very sizeable wins, but which does not bite the player too badly if they hit a losing streak and you have all the ingredients for what I think will undoubtedly be a smash hit success. If ever a slot deserved a number 1, Village People Macho Moves is it.
