African Legends slot: Spin to win Wowpot's Major Jackpot prize

The next big progressive jackpot slot from Microgaming has been released and this one is going to be very interesting to see how customers react to over coming weeks and months.

The 5x3 reel, Rolling Reels slot African Legends is here and on this game, not only can you win up to 1,200x your stake in the base game, but you can also win the Wowpot Major Jackpot prize, which is seeded at 50,000.

Add to that a rather attractive Wild Blast bonus feature alongside the standard Wilds on the reels, some generous Multiplier Trails and the chance to win up to 20 Free Spins and you have a game that could become legendary in its own right.

However, will the slot have as much appeal as other Wowpot-linked progressive jackpot games that offer a shot at the big Wowpot prize, as well as the Major jackpot? That is going to be the defining factor of this slot perhaps more-so than any of its features. See the Major winners on the WheelofWishes.net website.

Regardless of that, let's take a look at how the African Legends slot looks at face value.

Presentation

The presentation of the new Wowpot Major progressive jackpot linked slot is impressive as you would expect. Slingshot Studios have worked hard to produce a very good looking and sounding game and they have hit the nail on the head in terms of how the game looks. The backdrop to the slot of an African Savannah is very nicely brought to life and the musical accompaniment of soft jungle drums and a gentle tune played over them is very nice. I also like the rumbling sound that accompanies the reels when they spin.

The design of the reels is also clever with the symbols included on it also eye-catching. If there is one small gripe, it is that I would have liked to have seen a bit more of a dynamic backdrop on the slot. It is only a small issue but when you take the trouble to make your slot look as lovely as African Legends does, it seems a shame not to give the player added interest on what is happening in the backdrop to help bring the game to life.

The game features the Rolling Reels bonus, together with a Multiplier Trail which can offer some sizeable upgrades on wins the more you can land. Landing successive wins in the Rolling Reels feature is the key to unlocking both the major feature of this slot.

What is on the reels?

One of the nice touches about the African Legends slot is that the symbols have been given a nice design. Like many Rolling Reels games, they are made out to look like blocks with carvings on them and it is a nice effect and makes the game look very uniform on screen. The lower value symbols are the four playing card suits, with the lowest value being the Club, then the Diamond, then Heart and then Spade. Wins range from 0.12x your bet up to 2x your bet with these symbols.

There are them five higher value symbols and these are the different animal symbols. In order of value from lowest to highest these are the wild boar, the hippopotamus, the rhinoceros, the elephant and lastly the Lion. Wins on these symbols range from 0.4x your bet up to 6x your bet.

Somewhat unusually, the game does not feature a Scatter symbol and instead uses its Rolling Reels & Multiplier Trail features to trigger the Free Spins bonus, but it does feature a Wild symbol on the reels.

Wild features

The Gold face mask symbol is the main Wild symbol in the game and like the other symbols, it can appear stacked on the reels. It serves ostensibly as a replacement symbol for other symbols in the game to help create wins but you can also, more rarely, land Wilds across the reels on spins to trigger the bigger value wins in the base game.

Wins with a Wild range from 1x your bet for three on the first three reels, up to 10x your bet for landing five across the reels. To help you, Wilds can be super-stacked on the third reel.

There is also a base game bonus called the Wild Blast feature which can trigger randomly on any spin and which can turn up to five positions on the reels into Wilds. This feature is disabled however during any Rolling Reels wins.

Free Spins features

As mentioned above, the Free Spins bonus is triggered through the Rolling Reels feature in the base game. On any win, the Rolling Reels and attached Multiplier Trail bonus will kick in and symbols that form wins will disappear on the reels, with other symbols dropping down into positions to replace them.

If you can trigger Four or more Rolling Reels wins in succession, not only will your Multiplier Trail value increase, but you will also trigger the Free Spins bonus round. The more Rolling Reels wins you trigger, the greater the number of Free Spins and the higher the value of the Multiplier applied to all Free Spins wins will increase.

  • 4 Consecutive Rolling Reels Wins Triggers - 12 Free Spins with a 5x multiplier
  • 5 Consecutive Rolling Reels Wins Triggers - 15 Free Spins with a 6x multiplier
  • 6 Consecutive Rolling Reels Wins Triggers - 18 Free Spins with a 8x multiplier
  • 7 Consecutive Rolling Reels Wins Triggers - 20 Free Spins with a 10x multiplier
  • 8 Consecutive Rolling Reels Wins Triggers - Win the Wowpot Major Jackpot

However, if you can go one better than any of the outcomes listed above, then you will trigger the Wowpot Major Jackpot prize, which is also linked to this game and which is seeded at 50,000 and has paid out amounts of well over 200,000 since the revamped Wowpot progressive jackpots were first made available to play for back in February 2020.

Best feature of the African Legends WowMajor Jackpot slot

Of course, having a progressive jackpot prize of a minimum of 50,000 available to be won on a slot game is always a positive and that will certainly be an attractive option for many slots gamers who want to try their hand on the African Legends slot. However, I think that the Rolling Reels and Multiplier Trail features are the real stars of the show here. Not only do they provide you with great value wins in the base game from time to time, but they are also the key to unlocking those crucial Free Spins bonus rounds, which are far more likely to trigger for players than the Wowpot progressive jackpot prize and as such, I think this is what makes the African Legends game well worth taking a closer look at.

Conclusion

The question for me with the African Legends slot is not whether it is a good game, it is a very good slot, but whether they are going to want to spend 0.25 as a minimum to play for the Wowpot Major Jackpot, as opposed to playing for say 0.10 on another Wowpot slot and have the chance to win all four of the progressive jackpot prizes offered as part of that network. This is an ambitious and brave move from Microgaming to see whether the taste for winning the second-highest jackpot prize available on a network remains as strong as playing on games where you can win the highest. I have to say that I have my doubts on that, which is a shame as in many respects, African Legends is a fantastic slot in so many ways. It is just that lack of the really big Wowpot jackpot which could be a downside for players.
