Alchemy Blast slot transforms slots into a gold-plated collection game

Every now and then, Microgaming, or one of the company's partners, produces a game that doesn't fit easily into the definition of a slot.

We had the Incredible Balloon Machine a little while back and now we have Alchemy Blast, a game devised by one of Microgaming's content aggregator partners Skillzzgaming.

The game plays very much like a social media game like Candy Crush, where you try to land clusters of the same symbol together. Collect enough of the same symbol on a game and you can win a cash prizes based on a multiplier of your total bet. There are also other icons you can collect on the grid that can launch a number of bonus games.

So while Alchemy Blast isn't your typical slot, the question is whether it is worth you trying a few games on it to see what it has to offer. So to discover that, we decided to take a closer look to find out.

Presentation

The game begins with an introduction to it by your host and headmistress of the academy, Lita Flamel, who will guide you through a brief introduction of how the game plays. Alchemy Blast is not your typical slot game at all, in fact it is more a slot that has been crossed with a popular social networking game like Candy Crush.

There are no reels, no pay lines, instead you get a 6x5 grid where you win by clustering objects together of the same type in groups of three or more. Cluster together enough and you can win cash prizes, with different symbols offering a different prizes. There are also other symbols that can overlay on the reels to offer a range of bonuses for the player, which we will explore in more detail below.

The slot looks and sounds excellent with some nice cartoon style graphics, which are themed on an alchemists lab and a jaunty tune which does make it feel like you are playing your favourite social media type game.

What is on the reels?

There are no reels in the game but on the grid we have a number of different coloured symbols, each with its own alchemic-themed sign inscribed on it. There are red, blue, pink, yellow and green symbols on the grid and when you can collect seven or more of a type of symbol, you will win a prize, based on the size of your wager.

One set of seven red symbols pays 0.5x your bet, blue pays 1x your bet, pink pays 2x your bet, green pays 5x your bet and yellow pays the highest amount at 10x your bet. You play through your grid until there are no moves left on the grid at which point the game ends and any winnings you earned are paid out.

Wild features

There are no Wild symbols in the Alchemy Blast game, but what there are are a number of Elixirs which can be unlocked on the reels by landing them as part of a collected cluster. Plus a couple of other items which can be collected to unlock other bonuses which we will outline in the section below.

Free Spins features

In addition to the standard wins on the grid you can land on Alchemy Blast, there are some special symbols which you can collect during the game. The first three of these are the Elixirs.

There is the Blue Elixir of Magic, which needs to be collected once to trigger its Mystery Box bonus. Here you get to collect as many of the vials as you can in order to land a bigger cash win, but if you select the poisoned vial, the bonus will end.

If you collect two of the Elixir of Wisdom vials on the grid, which are coloured pink, then you will trigger the Wisdom Library bonus. Here, you can select one book from each shelf to earn a cash prize, but if you select the cursed book, then the bonus will end.

The third Elixir bons is the Green Elixir of Immortality vials and once you have collected three of these, you will launch the Free Games bonus round. Here you get five Free Games on the Alchemy Blast slot and every win you land in the Free Games will be subject to a 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier.

In addition to the Elixir bonuses, there is also a Philosopher's Stone shown on the reels at times. If you can land a cluster of three of these much rarer symbols together and click on the cluster, then you will win the jackpot in the game of 1,000x your bet.

Another nice touch is that the game has a rank progression, which increases for every 3 stars you earn. Stars are earned by triggering the bonus game, with the number of stars awarded dependent on which of the bonus games your trigger.

Best feature of the Alchemy Blast slot

This is a very different game to a slot but I can see that it would have real appeal to a slots gamer. Although there is a slight strategic element of the game (which only rears its head when there are more than one option to click on on the grid at any particular time) in general, this plays like a game of chance. The addition of the Elxiir and Philiospher's Stone bonuses give you something to aim for when playing the game and this does add an extra level of complexity to the game. I think these bonuses in particular are the most exciting aspect of the slot.

Conclusion

Overall, even though this is not a slot game, it is still fun to play and if you are a fan of games like Candy Crush or similar, then this game will undoubtedly tick all the right boxes for you. It is engaging, can be cheap to play per game, or you can ramp up the value if you have more to play for. It is medium variance, which means you get a nice mix of wins along with the games where you don't land a prize. The strategic element is key when you have several options to select, so do take your time when this occurs, but overall, this is a fun game to play if you want a change of pace from the usual slot fare.
