Banana Odyssey slot is a new Slingshot Studios game: Read our review
Slingshot Studios-produced slot Banana Odyssey has arrived and we can now take a look at how the two protagonists of the game, the chimpanzee astronauts Buck and Chip, fare on their adventures in this mid-to-low volatility, 5 reel, 10 pay line, win both ways slot game.
As soon as I hear that set up, I am brought to mind of a number of very good games that have used a small number of lines, but the ability to win both ways across the reels, so does the Banana Odyssey slot live up to the reputation of those games that have preceded it, or does it slip on a banana skin and fall flat on its face in trying to achieve something new and exciting for Microgaming players?
Let's strap on our space suit and head to the Banana Planet to find out.

The presentation of the Banana Odyssey slot is rather fun and this theme continues throughout the game as you follow Buck and Chip on their space-age quest to head home to their Banana Planet. The graphics are simple but effective and the game does have some nice humorous touches and the sound is also very well done. Slingshot Games have already produced some good-looking slots for Microgaming, including the Cash of Kingdoms slot, and the Banana Odyssey slot is another that follows in that mould.
The big thing to note on this slot is that you can win both ways across the reels. This is important as it means effectively instead of having just 10 pay lines, you have 20 as you can win on each line both from left to right as standard, but also from right to left too. When well done, this is a fantastic feature which has been a key component of some very high quality slot games in recent years, but it has only been used sporadically on Microgaming slots.
What is on the reels?
There are a number of different standard symbols on the reels and once again, these start with the playing card symbols. You can win up to 3.5x your stake for landing five on a pay line of these lower value symbols, which isn't a huge amount of money unless you are playing the slot at the much more expensive end of the wagering scale.
Alongside the playing card low symbols are four standard symbols, these are the Astro Nuts, Banana Blaster plus the two astrochimp heroes Buck and Chip, both of which pay the maximum of 10x for five across a pay line.
One important thing to note here is that symbols can be stacked on the reels and as such, it is possible to win across more than one reel on a spin and indeed, this is how you are going to land some of the bigger value wins in the game if you are lucky enough.
The Banana Planet, presumably the home world of Chip and Buck, is the Wild symbol in the game and it appears on the second, third and fourth reels of the slot only. The great news is that when you land a single Wild on those reels, it will expand to cover the reel entirely.
However, that is not the only thing that happens as when a Wild is landed and expands, you then get a re-spin of the other four reels (after you have received any pay out owing to you). This re-spin can see you land another Wild (which will also be held in place on the reels) and this will give you another final re-spin. If you can land all three Wilds this way, you can land some huge prizes, although this is a very difficult feat to achieve.
Free Spins features
There is a very simple Free Spins game which is triggered when you land three of the Scatter symbols on the middle three reels. This will trigger 10 Free Spins and in addition to this, you will also find one of the three middle reels turns completely Wild for the duration of your bonus spins.
You can then play through your spins as you would normally using the Sticky Wild to help you land more wins. Unfortunately, you cannot trigger additional Free Spins from within the bonus round.
Best feature of the Banana Odyssey slot
There's lots to enjoy with the Banana Odyssey slot but I feel that the way you can win across two reels and how that links in with the Sticky Wild and respin bonuses are what makes this game so enjoyable. The addition of Free Spins is also a positive but I don't quite feel they offer as much accessibility to players as the other bonus.
It is abundantly clear that this Microgaming slot has been modelled on some other slots that use the same win both ways and sticky Wilds bonuses, such as NetEnt's classic Starburst but Microgaming's latest offering does have one advantage over that game which is the addition of Free Spins. Banana Odyssey works very well as a slot. It is not the biggest jackpot available however which may deter punters but as a low to mid level variance slot it works well. If you enjoyed Starburst, then there is no doubt that you will get a lot of enjoyment too out of this slot game especially with the added extra of those Free Spins too.
You can play Banana Odyssey slot at any of the Mega Moolah casinos.
