Halloween would not be Halloween without So Many Monsters slot

Part of a trio of games that were all released using the same game engine and structure, So Many Monsters, along with So Much Sushi and So Many Sweets, offered slot players something a little different when they were first released.

In So Many Monsters, the main feature was the fact that the five different coloured Monsters, who are more cute than scary, all have the ability to replicate themselves when landed in a winning combination on a pay line. Land five across the reels and you could trigger a big money win of up to 25 symbols in your line.

With a choice of five different Free Spins games too, one for each monster, this was a slot that promised plenty of scarily good action for players when it was first released. So we need to check whether it has stood the test of time. So that is precisely what we did here.

Presentation

The presentation of the So Many Monsters slot is somewhat basic to tell the truth. The slot has five reels and 25 pay lines in play, and these are displayed on screen against a purple backdrop that fades down into a dark black at the top of the reels. The musical accompaniment on the slot is also a little on the basic side, but it does fit in with the theme of the slot nicely.

The animations are smooth and the way the monsters subdivide when you land a win, is nicely animated. It is a nice looking slot and also plays well, but it doesn't have anything that is truly eye-catching for players to enjoy.

What is on the reels?

There are essentially ten symbols on the reels in the base game, excluding the two symbols that offer the main bonus features of the slot, the Wild and Scatter. The lower value symbols are the instantly recognisable playing card symbols from the 10 through to the Ace and these offer the lowest value wins in the game from between 5 coins up to 110 coins.

Things get more interesting when you look at the other five higher value symbols in the game, the five different coloured monsters. These symbols start off as standard single symbols, but when you land three or more in a row on a pay line, then the Monsters will start to multiply. If you get more than six on your pay line, then you trigger a win.

The number of symbols you can therefore generate across the five reels ranges from six up to 25 symbols and of course the more monster symbols part of your win, the higher the value of the win.

There are five different monster symbols ranging in value from the blue, purple and green to the higher two monsters that are coloured yellow and red.

Wild features

The So Many Monsters logo symbol is the in game Wild and appears on all the reels in the game. It also substitutes for all symbols on the reels apart from the Wild. It is mainly used as a substitute in the game where it can form part of a win on any of the lower or higher value symbols.

However, if you can land more than three Wilds across the reels from the leftmost reel on a pay line then, you can win between 55 coins, which increases to a sizeable 7,500 coins if you can land all five Wilds on a single pay line.

Free Spins features

The key to landing the Free Spins bonus in the So Many Monsters slot is landing three, four or five of the eyeball Scatter symbols across the reels. When you do, you will win a cash prize of 3x, 10x or 75x your stake, depending on how many Scatters landed, you will then trigger a Free Spins bonus round.

With 2 Scatters, you win your stake money back, but do not trigger Free Spins.

In the bonus feature, you can choose between the Red, Yellow, Green, Purple or Blue monsters for your bonus. Each offers between 8 Free Spins and 16 Free Spins and the maximum amount you can win ranges from 160,000 coins per line if you select 16 Free Spins, up to 320,000 coins per line if you select the 8 Free Spins.

During Free Spins, the symbol you select replaces all the other higher value symbols on the reels, which offers you a greater chance of landing a win than in the base game.

Best feature of the So Many Monsters slot

Although you would probably expect the dividing monster symbols to be the best feature of the So Many Monsters slot, in actual fact I feel it is the Free Spins bonus round that is the best aspect of the game. Firstly, I just don't feel that the Monster's dividing in the base game happens often enough to make it a key feature and even when it does happen, you tend to land the fewest number of symbols and rarely hit a very high number. In contrast, the Free Spins bonus when landed, which does take patience, can see you hit some very sizeable wins relatively frequently when you trigger the bonus and it is this which makes the slot feel like it is good value for money.

Conclusion

As part of a trio of games including So Much Sushi and So Many Sweets, the So Many Monsters slot isn't a scary game at all and is a fun, cute slot which has some interesting monsters in play and some unusual features to experience. I am not 100% sure the dividing monsters feature in the base game works. A lot of big money prizes are available in this part of the game, but in truth your chances of hitting them seem relatively small. Your chances of landing a big value win are better in the Free Spins bonus in my experience as you can pick which of the games to play (I tend to go with a mix of options depending on my mood as I have had good results playing the Free Spins bonus both with maximum and minimum Free Spins). So Many Monsters is a good slot, but perhaps just falls a bit short in terms of excitement in the main base game.
