Hey Presto! Microgaming’s The Great Albini slot appears as if like magic!

The Great Albini slot review

The mind-blowing tricks of the likes of Dynamo, David Blaine and Derren Brown do tend to polarise opinions on magicians, some absolutely love their shows and their sleight of hand, others find their brand of entertainment particularly disconcerting and freaky.

While I'm not a huge fan of the showy illusionist, David Copperfield's great big shows and tricks leave me cold, but the close up street magic of Dynamo is far more appealing, as is the more psychological and slightly more disturbing approach favoured by Derren Brown. However these are all more modern magicians, a long way from the man wielding a wand in top hat and tails.

And that is where the new slot from Foxium on behalf of Microgaming comes in. The Great Albini is a tribute to the glorious magicians era of the past, where the protagonist performed in a dinner jacket, with a glamorous assistant, covered from head to toe in sequins, on stage to help them achieve the seemingly impossible.

Contained within the slot is a magic trick of its own as if you trigger Free Spins then the size of the reels increase to a 5x6 slot with double the amount of pay lines in play. However that's not the only trick that it has up its sleeve to keep players spinning the reels on this 25-fixed pay lines game.

Let's take a closer look at the Great Albini slot and see if it truly is a magic slot.

The setting for the Great Albini slot is a stage area, somewhat sparse to be told with the Great Albini himself standing to the left of the reels carring a rather large staff with him which he uses to wield his magical powers.

The reels are in the centre of the stage and are the usual 5x3 set up in the base game. The graphics are nicely done, although the empty seats in the theatre at the foot of the reels do tend to give you the impression that the Great Albini is playing to an empty theatre.

The musical accompaniment is a somewhat unusual mix of spooky music combined with an attempt at creating a feeling of wonderment and bewilderment and to an extent it works, although it does tend to get a little repetitive after a while and could have you hitting the sound off option, that comes onto screen before the game starts, after a short while.

What is on the reels?

The first thing to note is that there are ten standard symbols on the reels and these are split into two distinct sets. The first are the lower value symbols, which are the playing card symbols and they fit nicely into this theme. They offer the smallest wins in the game of up to 80 coins for landing five aces across the reels. Wins for three of these symbols across the reels only max out at 20 coins which isn't great (considering you will wager 25 coins per spin).

The higher value symbols are all based on the Great Albini's show and feature Lucky Cups, Knives, a yellow Canary, his glamorous assistant Lily and lastly the Great Albini himself. These symbols offer higher value wins of up to 50 coins for three on a winning line and the jackpot is 1,000 coins if you land five of the Great Albini across all five reels on a single line.

There are other symbols on the reels and these are linked to the main bonus features of the slot which we will explore in more detail below.

Wild features

The Wild symbol is very easy to spot and it appears only the second, third, fourth and fifth reels. It can be used as a substitute for any of the standard symbols, but not the Mystery Box Bonus symbol, the Lily Wild symbol or the Free Spins scatter.

There's no cash prize for landing successive Wilds across the reels, but of course if you can land more than one Wild on the screen at any one time, then your chances of a bigger value win increase a great deal.

Free Spins features

There are a number of bonus features in the Great Albini slot and the first of these is the Free Spins bonus, which is activated when you land the Free Spins Scatter symbol on each of the middle three reels on a single spin. This will activate a total of 12 Free Spins and in addition, the size of the reels doubles from the usual 5 reels with three symbols showing on each, to five reels with six symbols showing on each.

Furthermore, the number of winning lines you have across the reel also doubles from 25 to 50, which should, in theory, give you a better chance of landing a better cash prize, or triggering some of the bonus features that can only be accessed through Free Spins, such as the Lily Feature.

The Lily Feature is triggered during a Free Spin when you land the Lily Wild symbol on the middle three reels and it covers the entire reel. When you do any wins triggered are subject to a 2x multiplier and you also get a free re-spin in addition to triggering any win.

Other bonus features include the Mystery Box Respin which is a base game bonus that is triggered when you land a full stack of Mystery Boxes on the middle reel. This earns you three respins with the Mystery Boxes remaining in place and any additional boxes you land in on the reels also remain in place. Every time you land a Mystery Box, the number of respins remaining resets back to three.

This bonus feature continues until you finish your respins without landing any more Mystery Boxes or you turn all the reel spaces to Mystery Boxes. After it completes the Mystery boxes then reveal a random symbol and any winning lines are paid out.

The last feature is the Bonus Box feature which can land on any spin in the main game and you can select the box to buy either 8, 10 or 12 free spins. If landed with the Lily feature, then you can instantly trigger the Free Spins bonus game.

Best feature of the The Great Albini slot

There's lots of nice touches with The Great Albini slot, the presentation is slick, the number of bonus features is excellent and the fact that the game has a nice little twist with the size of the reels increasing from three symbols each to six in the Free Spins, together with 25 additional winning lines, does mean it plays differently to most slots. The jackpot size is also decent and will appeal to players of all bankroll sizes. The best feature for me is the Free Spins bonus, especially if you can trigger the Lily Feature from within it as this is when generally the better wins are landed.

The Great Albini is a very enjoyable slot from Foxium and is another feather in the cap for the company. It has enough features to lift it above the standard slot game and its neat presentation make it an eye-catching slot to play. Add to that a decent jackpot and the fact it is playable for all players with a minimum bet of just 0.25 per spin and you have a game that is certainly going to appeal to the vast majority of slot players.
