Immortal Romance gets a fresh injection of new blood with exciting revamp

Immortal Romance has long been one of Microgaming's most popular slot games. Based on the classic Thunderstruck II slot structure, this heady mix of Vampiric love and gothic romance proved to be a huge hit not just when the game was released, but pretty much ever since.

Well in 2020, Microgaming have decided to give their slot a bit of a dust down and polish and the result is the newly released version of the game, which came out towards the end of May 2020. A bold move from Microgaming, given the popularity of the original.

Presentation

Although given a slight facelift and revamp, the Immortal Romance slot remains entirely recognisable and the differences that have been made to the game have only been cosmetic, improving the odd graphic or animation here or there for example. So what you have is a game that remains true to the popular original, with all the same mechanics and bonuses in play, just with a little brush up in some areas.

In truth, you would barely notice the difference even if you were a keen player of the original game. The new slot looks and sounds great and some of the sound effects on the slot are still very effective. Graphically it is excellent and some of the new animations when you trigger some of the bigger value character wins, or hit the bonus features are also nicely done. What is on the reels?

There are essentially three levels of symbols on the reels, they begin with the playing card symbols which go from the 9 through to the Ace. Wins on these symbols are small for 3 or 4 across a pay line but much improved when you land five (as you can see in our video play-through).

There are two mid-range symbols which are the papers and the Gothic mansion and these offer slightly higher value wins, the four main characters of the Immortal Romance slot, Amber, Troy, Michael and Sarah are the four higher value symbols on the reels. Again five symbol wins pay much more than three or four symbol wins.

In addition to these main symbols, there are two feature symbols on the reels, the Wild and the Scatter which we will look at in more detail below.

Wild features

The Immortal Romance logo is the in game Wild on the slot and this appears across all five reels. It can serve as a substitute symbol for other standard symbols (but not the Scatter) to help you land additional wins but you can also land several Wilds in succession across the reels and if you can land all five then you will win a cash prize. All wins when the Wild serves as a substitute symbol are also subject to a 2x multiplier, which is a nice touch.

In addition to this feature there is a Wild Desire feature which can trigger at random during the base game. When this occurs, up to five reels can be turned completely Wild and of course, this gives you much more chance of landing a win when the bonus has been completed.

Free Spins features

If you can land two or more Scatters then you win a cash prize, but if you can land three or more, you win a cash prize and trigger a shot at the Chamber of Spins bonus round.

This is a sequence of four different Free Spins bonus games which you must play through in turn to unlock the ability to select which of the four games to play the next time you land the bonus.

The first of these bonuses is the Amber Free Spins bonus which sees you land 10 Free Spins with a 5x multiplier applied to all wins during the bonus game. You can also retrigger the bonus from within the game if you are fortunate enough.

Finally, from the 15^th trigger you can play the Sarah Bonus round, which is 25 Free Spins with the Wild Vine feature. This appears on the third reel and when activated will turn symbols into additional Wilds on the reel to trigger a win. Furthermore, if you land 2, 3, 4 or 5 Scatters during this game you will re-trigger 1, 2, 3 or 4 additional Free Spins too.
