Just For The Win’s new Icy Gems slot is a sparkler at Microgaming casinos
It has been a busy month for the people at Just For the Win, who have been working with Microgaming to produce games for the slots giant.
They recently released the Reel Talent slot and just a short time later, they have announced that their latest offering, Icy Gems, will be available in casinos from the 28th November 2018.
At first glance, Icy Gems looks suspiciously like the Reel Talent slot and on closer inspection, you quickly realise that the two slots have more than just a passing similarity. Essentially, what you have with Icy Gems is Reel Talent, in a slightly different format and with a different theme.
Now, I don't mind this in so much as slot games are slot games and there isn't a huge amount you can do to diversify from this, but the question is whether Icy Gems offers anything above and beyond what you can already find on the Reel Talent slot, or whether it is simply another option for players to play a similar slot on a different theme.
This has worked in the past for Microgaming, so let's see if Icy Gems adds a little seasonal sparkle to Microgaming Casinos this winter.

The layout of the Icy Gems slot is, as you would expect, similar to the Reel Talent slot in that you have a 5x3 reel set up and 20 lines in play. These all must be played and you can bet from 0.20 per spin up to 20.00 per spin on the game.
To the left of the reels seems to be another reel, but what this actually is, is the Symbol Storage boxes. These come into play when you land the main bonus feature of the Icy Gems slot, the Re-Spin bonuses and we will explore more about that bonus a little later in the review.
The look of the Icy Gems slot is what I would term clear, in that the graphics are sharp, vivid and very easy to distinguish, but there isn't the backdrop that you get with some other games. The music too is nicely done and is one that helps, rather than detracts from your concentration when playing the game.
Would it be fair to say that Just For The Win simply ported over the structure of the Reel Talent slot and dressed it up in a new livery? Probably, because that seems to be exactly what they have done.
What is on the reels?
There are a number of easy to follow symbols on the reels. The lower value symbols are the playing card low symbols from Jack through to the Ace and they are alongside the higher value symbols, which are all gemstones of different shapes and colours (hence the name).
The look and feel of the slot did remind me a little of Starburst from Net Entertainment and If you enjoyed that game, then I feel the way that the Icy Gems slot is presented, combined with its features, will also mean that you enjoy this Just For The Win offering too.
Alongside the standard symbols, there are two other symbols to look out for. The first is the Wild symbol, which is the big yellow W and the second is the Icy Gems symbol which is the highest paying of all the symbols on the reels.
As there is no Free Spins game on the slot there is no dedicated Scatter symbol in the game.
There is just one Wild symbol in the game, the Yellow W symbol and this substitutes for any of the other symbols on the reel to offer you more chance of landing winning lines on a spin. However there is no multiplier attached to these wins, which is a little disappointing to tell the truth.
Free Spins features
With their being no Scatter symbols on the slot, the Icy Gems game does not have a dedicated Free Spins bonus round. However, what it does have instead is the SuperSpins bonus and this is where those Symbol Storage boxes come into play in the game.
Each time that you land a win on a spin, the symbol that created the win is stored in one of the Storage Symbol boxes. Then on your next spin, if you win again, then the symbol that triggered that win is stored in the next Storage Symbol box. If you then spin a third consecutive win (and it has to be consecutive as the symbols will disappear if a non-winning spin is landed), and you fill all three boxes, then the SuperSpin bonus will activate.
There are three bonuses in the SuperSpin feature and which one you trigger will depend on whether you have three different symbols, two of one symbol and one of another, or three examples of the same symbol in the Symbol Storage boxes.
If you land the most common three different symbols, you receive a Silver Super Spin, which will see the Reels populated only by the three symbols you landed in the box. If you only have two different symbols collected then you land the Gold Super Spin, which has just two symbols on the reels. Finally, if you collected three of the same symbol in your Symbol Storage, then you will have the Epic Spin, where just one symbol is on the reels, meaning you will land the full complement of that symbol on all reels in all positions for a huge win.
Best feature of the Icy Gems Slot
Without doubt, the SuperSpin feature is what make the Icy Gems slot so enjoyable to play. The good news is that compared to some Free Spins bonuses, this feature is easier to trigger and tends to trigger more often. However, the size of the payouts you get does vary considerably and you can land a very small win as well as the big money wins. Obviously, your chances of a bigger win increase if you have fewer different symbols on the reels.
Essentially, what you have here is the same basic slot game as Reel Talent, just with a different theme. The bonuses and the size of the jackpots are almost identical across both the games, so if you enjoyed what Reel Talent offered, then you are sure to enjoy Icy Gems. This is also a good slot for those punters who enjoy higher variance games, as this is certainly one that doesn't offer up its biggest cash prizes lightly, but when it does they can be very profitable for the player.
You can play Icy Gems now at any of our Mega Moolah casinos.
