Mega Moolah now holds the world record for online slots jackpots

Well, it has finally happened. In the six months from April 2015, when a Canadian player won CA$7.5m, the progressive jackpot prize on the popular slot Mega Moolah grew into a monstrous £13.2m!

Over the course of the summer, as increasing numbers of players attempted to win and amount of money that was already a record for the game, the coffers continued to swell until early October 2015 when just over £13.2m British Pounds were swelling the Mega Moolah account.

It was at this point late into the night on the 6th October 2015 that British soldier Jonathon Heywood, based in Crewe, Cheshire, decided he would visit an online casino for a few spins of the Mega Moolah game. With limited funds available, he wagered just £0.25p per spin but in those few minutes of playing, his life changed forever.

Mega Moolah Jackpot Bonus Game explained

The first question many people ask about Mega Moolah is how a player can wager say £0.25p and another player wager £0.50 or £1 or even the maximum 125 coins and it be regarded as a fair game? Surely those who wager more should only have a chance at winning the progressive jackpot.

Indeed, there are a few games about where the player must bet the maximum amount (Major Millions being a fine example) in order to stand a chance of winning the top progressive jackpot prize, but when Microgaming designed Mega Moolah they wanted a jackpot that would appeal to both the higher roller player and the smaller stakes game.

They achieved this by designing the game so that the more you stake on a spin, the greater the chance you have on that spin of triggering the Jackpot wheel. So if you wager £0.25 per spin, you are less likely to trigger the jackpot on that spin than a player spending £1 on a spin.

So on every spin, how much you wager directly affects your chances of landing the jackpot wheel. But once you have managed to access the jackpot wheel, your chances of winning a jackpot increase markedly. Of course, everyone knows that the Mega Moolah slot actually has four jackpots, the Mini, Minor, Major and the Mega jackpot. It is the Mega jackpot which grows to well over millions of pounds with the other three jackpots paid out far more frequently for much lesser amounts.

In the Jackpot Wheel bonus, you simply start the wheel in motion and it starts to spin, it will then land on one of the four jackpots available and on those all-too-rare occasions, that will be the Mega Jackpot and your life will change from that point on.

Mr Heywood gets lucky!

Following the realisation that he had won a staggering amount of money, Mr Heywood then faced a nervous few days while the teams at Betway and Microgaming (the creators of the Mega Moolah slot) confirmed his win was authentic and set about handing him over his stunning win.

Indeed, by the following day, Mr Heywood was still in shock and went off to work as if it was just any other normal day!

However, it didn't take long for the slot grapevine to realise that there was a brand new big winner out there and that this jackpot winner may well have just set a record for winning an online slot progressive jackpot.

Record-breaking jackpot

There was real buzz about this win as it eclipsed the previous record held for an online slot progressive jackpot win. That record was set by an unnamed Finnish slot player who won a total of 17,861,813 Euros when playing the Mega Fortune slot in his native land back in 2013.

However, with the exchange rate as it was on the day of his win, this meant that Mr Heywood's win translated into 17,879,645. Just 18,000 Euros more than the current record.

By now, the slot world was desperate to know who this lucky winner was and with the formalities aside of confirming his win, Mr Heywood soon went public with news of his success.

Medical treatment for dad

After a tough year which saw Mr Heywood lose his grandfather and his father seriously ill in need of a heart and lung transplant, when Mr Heywood spoke to the press he confirmed that the first thing he would do with the money is try to help his dad's health improve. "I couldn't believe that I'd won all this money at the time - and it still hasn't sunk in" he told reporters and continued "It's amazing. The first thing I will spend it on is the best possible medical treatment for my dad. That's more important than anything. Family comes first and I'd give all this money back for him to be healthy again."

Mr Heywood, a committed F1 fan also revealed that he would like to take members of his family away on a Mediterranean cruise to help celebrate the win but was at a loss on what to spend his windfall on, apart from one luxury item. "I'm trying not to get carried away," he stated. "I really don't know what else I am going to buy with the money, apart from a yellow Bentley Continental GT! "I never even dreamed of driving a Bentley, let alone owning one. I've got a Fiat Punto at the moment." He told reporters.

A spokesman for Betway, Alan Alger, stated "We couldn't be happier for Jon - he's an incredibly nice guy and his family will benefit immensely from his huge win."

Roger Raatgever, CEO of Microgaming also added his voice congratulating the new progressive slot record holder stating "We have the longest standing progressive jackpot network, having launched the first Internet progressive jackpot in 1998, and the Mega Moolah in 2006, we have paid out half a billion euros to date.

"I'm absolutely overjoyed that our software has generated the world's largest ever online jackpot win. "Congratulations to Jonathon on this life-changing and historic win."
