Mega Moolah Wiki - All you need to know about the game
Whatever you think about Wikipedia, there is no doubt that the basic principles behind the online encyclopaedia are admirable. To offer a free repository if knowledge, that anybody can add to and improve (or deface if you are so inclined) while adhering to certain guidelines when posting, has certainly made it easier for people to find out information on a huge number of subjects.
This led to me wondering, what would our own Wikipedia page for the Mega Moolah slot say? What would people who search for a Mega Moolah Wiki online, actually be looking for?
So with that simple premise as the starting point, what I have done is collect together the key bits of information about the Mega Moolah slot and put them together into our own Mega Moolah Wiki, the one-stop you will need to find out all that you need to know about one of the world's most popular online progressive jackpot slot games. We'll also expand on this page over time.
Mega Moolah Wiki
Mega Moolah is a progressive jackpot slot that was developed and released by slot development company Microgaming. The game has grown in popularity since it was released and the size of the progressive jackpots on offer has increased over the years, which has also helped improve the appeal of the game with players.
In October 2015, the game earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records when it paid out a then World Record amount for an online slot game of £13,213,838 to Brit Jon Heywood. Two subsequent Mega Jackpot wins have not yet been verified as new records but could be recognised as surpassing this amount in the future. At least for now those winners have chosen to remain anonymous and therefore it is not possible to enter the Guinness World Records.
The slot is part of the Microgaming Progressive Jackpot Network of games, which by February 2019 has paid out more than €1 billion to players landing cash prizes when playing the company's selection of progressive jackpot games and slots.
Following a successful release on Mega Moolah on desktop, a mobile version of the game was released in early 2012 and since then many winners have landed their big jackpot prize playing the game via mobile.
Players around the world can play Mega Moolah in a number of different currencies including US, Canadian and New Zealand Dollars, the Euro, Swedish Krona, Norwegian Krone, Japanese Yen, Renminbi, Polish Złoty, Russian Ruble, and possible some other currencies as well. In addition to these currencies, Mega Moolah is also available to play using Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Tether. The base currency of the game is British Pounds since Microgaming is based out of the United Kingdom. All winnings are paid out in the same currency as the bet was made.
Since the original Mega Moolah slot was released it was an unusual progressive jackpot slot in many ways. First of all, it had a relatively low minimum bet in order to be eligible for the top progressive jackpot prize (0.25) which was considerably cheaper than many of its rival games.
Secondly and most importantly, the slot would guarantee the winner of the Mega Progressive Jackpot a prize of at least 1,000,000 in the currency in which they were playing the game. However, in reality the fact that a large amount of time (and spins) can pass between triggers of the Mega Jackpot, means that the jackpot can grow far higher than the original seed amount.
The slot is based on an African Safari theme and features two distinct parts. The first and most commonly played is the base game, which includes a Free Spins bonus game, and which offers a top cash prize of up to 225,000 coins to be won.
The second part of the game is the Jackpot Bonus Wheel game, which can be triggered at random on any qualifying base game spin on the Mega Moolah slot. It is this Jackpot Bonus Game, which offers players the chance to win one of the four progressive jackpots on the game. Which are (in order of size), Mini, Minor, Major and Mega.
If players trigger the Jackpot Bonus Game then they are guaranteed to win one of the four progressive jackpot prizes by spinning the Jackpot Bonus Wheel. Whatever coloured sector the wheel lands on from their spin will correspond to one of the progressive prizes. Most often this is the Mini or Minor prizes, with the Major jackpot awarded far less often and the Mega jackpot only triggered rarely.
These progressive prizes are funded by initial seeding amounts from Microgaming and then increased with every spin played by players on the game, with a small amount of their wager being the progressive jackpot fund contribution.
If the progressive jackpot is won in full (by a player landing the prize in the base currency of British pounds), then the jackpot is reset to zero as the entire prize is awarded and Microgaming will then immediately seed the jackpot prize with £1,000,000 to ensure that there is always at least a million GBP available to be won when playing the game.
Microgaming have stipulated that players winning the Mega progressive jackpot on Mega Moolah will receive their prize in the currency in which they played, in one single, full payment.
Alongside the Mega jackpot prizes, a number of players have won large amounts of money by triggering the Major progressive jackpot prize, as well as some who have landed big cash prizes simply by playing the base game.
Notable jackpot winners
The first known trigger of the Mega Moolah jackpot occurred in November 2007 when a player playing using South African Rand triggered a R4,308,741.01 jackpot prize. There was just one trigger of the jackpot prize in both 2007 and 2008, before it was won three times in 2009 and then just once more in 2010.
Two more wins occurred in 2011 but in 2012 the jackpot was won four times, including the largest win up until that point in December 2012 when a UK-based player Jon Orchard landed a £5,883,044 prize. The win would be largest cash value win on the slot for three years.
It was beaten in October 2015 when another UK-based player Jonathan Heywood landed a £13,213,838.68 prize when playing at Betway Casino. This win was confirmed as the largest ever progressive jackpot slot win at an online casino by the Guinness Book of World Records.
In April 2017, a new world record for a win via a mobile device was set when one player landed an €8,012,153.35 prize when playing from their smartphone or tablet.
2017 also saw the record number of winners of the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot with a recorded 13 winners of the prize during the year, more than double the previous high of six winners in 2014.
In 2018, the current World Record was challenged (but has not yet been ratified) one one player landed an €18,910,668.01 prize on 28th September 2018.
However, just a few months later in January 2019, the largest ever amount regardless of currency was paid out to one player who landed a prize of CA$20,059,287.27 on the 30th January 2019. Surely the largest online jackpot in Canada by far!

Although Mega Moolah refers to the original African Safari-themed version of the game. There are and have been several other games that have been linked to the same Mega Moolah progressive jackpot and which allow players a chance to win the same jackpot prizes.
Currently, alongside Mega Moolah players can play either Mega Moolah Isis (an Egyptian themed slot), Mega Moolah 5-Reel Drive (an Americana Road-Movie themed slot) or Mega Moolah Summertime versions of the game and from each you can access the Jackpot Bonus Game.
In the past, two other slots have offered a chance to win the Mega Moolah Jackpot, The Lord of the Rings and The Dark Knight, although both these slots are now no longer available to play.
The vast majority of wins of the Mega Moolah jackpot have occurred from playing the original game. Only three wins have come to players playing different versions. Jon Orchard's win in December 2012 came playing the now defunct Dark Knight slot, while there have been two players that have landed their prize playing the 5-Reel Drive slot (one in April 2012, one in June 2014).
Winners and Publicity
Winners of the top Mega Moolah progressive jackpot prize can decide whether they want to go public with their win, or remain anonymous, which is why not all winners of the Mega Moolah jackpot do not have a story to tell on our Winners page.
