Microgaming's best Sci-Fi slot games

Microgaming's Science Fiction themed slots games

Science-fiction of course brings a degree of the spectacular and I think you'll find anybody with a love of dealing with imaginative concepts tends to enjoy science-fiction in equal measure.

It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that both of these themes have been used by slot games developers as the inspiration behind a number of games and Microgaming are one such company that has produced a number of slots on this theme.

Outlined below are some of the very best examples of Sci-Fi or Space slots from Microgaming. So turn the boosters up to full and strap yourself in for a trip into the beyond!

Astronomical

  • Reels - 3
  • Lines - 1
  • Minimum Bet - 0.25
  • Maximum Bet - 75.00
  • Free Spins - No
  • Mobile Friendly? - No

We begin with one of Microgaming's more retro-styled slots, Astronomical. This is a standard three-reel slot with a single pay line which can be played from just 0.25 per spin. It is loosely based on a space theme (as the pun in the title suggests) and a couple of the symbols on the reels are linked to it, as is the backdrop to the slot, but essentially what you have here is a simple 3-reeler that is perfect for beginner slot players to gain experience playing before they move onto more complex games.

You can wager one, two or three coins and the jackpot increases with every coin you wager from 2,000 coins, to 4,000 up to a maximum 8,000 coins when you wager three per spin. This is achieved by landing three of the Astronomical Wilds across the single pay line on a spin.

If you want to play a simple, easy to follow and retro-styled space-themed slot, then Astronomical is a great starting point, especially for newer slot players.

Battlestar Galactica

  • Reels - 5
  • Lines - 243 ways
  • Minimum Bet - 0.30
  • Maximum Bet - 60.00
  • Free Spins - Yes
  • Mobile Friendly? - No

One of Microgaming's licensed slots is based on the famous Battlestar Galactica TV series, which starred Blade Runner star Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama. The presentation on this slot is very nicely done and the game features three different modes which can change at any point in the game, offering different bonuses and chances to win. These are Normal mode, Run mode and Fight mode.

Furthermore, as you play through the game, you will gain higher ranks as you progress, which unlocks new content in the slot and the more you wager, the faster you can climb through the ranks. The slot also features a number of bonuses which trigger at random depending on the mode of the game you are currently playing in. The Ion Storm bonus is particularly interesting as this can occur at any time in the Normal mode and when it does, it can turn up to five reels Wild. With a jackpot of 70,000 coins available to be won, plus a wide selection of bonus games, including a free spins round, this is a very visually exciting slot which is faithful to the series, while being a fantastic Sci-Fi slot in its own right.

Cosmic Cat

  • Reels - 3
  • Lines - 1
  • Minimum Bet - 0.50
  • Maximum Bet - 10.00
  • Free Spins - No
  • Mobile Friendly? - No

This is one of the most simple of Microgaming's range of slots but it is also one of the most enjoyable. We know that people sent a monkey and a dog into space in days gone by, but now there's a cat. Cosmic Cat and he is the star of this simple 3-reel, 1-line retro slot which features just a couple of symbols on the reels.

You can select your coin size and bet one or two coins per spin on the slot and the jackpot prize is 500 coins per coin you wager (so if you wager 2 coins, that jackpot increases to 1,000 coins). There's no bonus features to speak of and no free spins games but what you do have is a fun, enjoyable pared-back retro slot that harks back to the halcyon days of slot gaming, along with a cat in a spacesuit, what is there not to enjoy about that?!

Electric Diva

  • Reels - 5
  • Lines - 40
  • Minimum Bet - 0.40
  • Maximum Bet - 50.00
  • Free Spins - Yes
  • Mobile Friendly? - No

I've included the Electric Diva slot in my list of Sci-Fi/Space games because although this 5-reel, 40 line slot appears to be about a female guitarist, in actual fact she is an inhabitant of Spark City, which just so happens to be under attack from rather strange looking alien machines and the only person able to save the city is the Electric Diva who wields her guitar like a weapon to obliterate the advancing alien hoards.

The Electric Diva symbol is the Wild and she can substitute for any of the other standard symbols to create winning lines, although she doesn't apply a multiplier sadly. However, if you land five of these symbols on a line, you can win 300x your line bet. Land five of her Guitar Scatters and you can win 100x your total stake too.

The Free Spins bonus is activated by landing three or more of the Alien Bonus symbols on the reels. This activates the Electric Diva Bonus feature. Three symbol gives you one free spin with a 1x multiplier, four gets you two free spins with a 2x multiplier and five gives you three free spins with a 3x multiplier.

In the bonus, the Electric Diva blasts the aliens with her guitar which increases the size of your cash prize, multiplier and adds to the number of free spins you have. You can therefore claim up to 40 Free Spins and an 8x multiplier in this round and wins of up to 2,800 times your stake are possible.

Star Dust

  • Reels - 5
  • Lines - 40
  • Minimum Bet - 0.40
  • Maximum Bet - 400.00
  • Free Spins - Yes
  • Mobile Friendly? - No

Star Dust is a 5x4 reel slot which has a total of 40 lines in play in the base game, but which increases up to 1024 lines in the Free Spins bonus. The game is based on a space theme, although it, annoyingly, has the playing card lower value icons in play once again. Higher value icons include gems and the main Wild symbol is the Star Dust logo and this is stacked on all the reels in the base game and in the Free Spins bonus, it is super-stacked on the fourth and fifth reels.

There is also the bonus symbol which is a swirling galaxy and this plays a key role in the base game as when it lands on the third reel, it will collect up to one gem from each reel, which adds to the number of free spins you can earn (up to a maximum of 13 free spins). Once you have collected 10 gems in this way, the Free Spins bonus triggers with the amount of free spins won and you can win up to 200,000 coins playing this way.

During Free Spins the Radiant Re-spin feature is in operation which may see reels 4 and 5 re-spin to give you a chance to boost your winnings on a spin. Land 3 symbols on a win and reels 4 and 5 re-spin once. Land a 4-symbol win and reel 5 re-spins once.

This is a fun and innovative space-themed slot that has some nice bonus features and which offers a sizeable jackpot prize for players to chase.

Starscape

  • Reels - 5
  • Lines - 25
  • Minimum Bet - 0.25 (for all 25 lines in play)
  • Maximum Bet - 250.00
  • Free Spins - No
  • Mobile Friendly? - No

In terms of a slot that is purely about space, then then Starscape ticks all the boxes. This is a 25-line, 5-reel slot that can be played for as little as 0.25 per spin, although you can reduce the number of lines in play on each spin to reduce the cost down further to just 0.01 per spin if you prefer. Annoyingly, the game uses playing card lows on the reels, which look out of place compared to all the other space age graphics in the game, but that aside, this is a decent slot game, but one that does lack a free spins bonus.

Instead, you can land the Starscape bonus which is a matching game where you match four of the same symbols to win a prize of up to 37,500 coins. The jackpot prize however is 70,000 coins and the biggest standard prize is 7,000 coins for five of the Starscape Wilds across the reels. The Wild also serves as a 2x multiplier on wins when used in conjunction with other symbols.
