Microgaming's new high variance slot Diamond Empire is a gem

Higher variance slot games are a bit like Marmite, you either love them and want to play them often due to the larger than average wins you can achieve on the games, or you feel that the rewards are not enough for what you spend and avoid them like the plague.

So which side of that fence you sit on will likely influence your opinion of the new slot Diamond Empire made by Triple Edge Studios for Microgaming. Triple Edge Studios are also responsible for Playboy Gold, Halloween108 Heroes and Oink Country Love, all of which have already been released to Microgaming-powered casinos.

Diamond Empire is a slot which makes no bones about what it is, a higher variance game aimed at players who are comfortable spending a little more than the norm per spin in order to get the most out of the game.

So if you are the kind of player who balks at paying 3.75 to 7.50 a spin (or maybe even more) and prefer lower value games then Diamond Empire may not be the game for you. You can of course play it for less (spins start at just 0.15) but the rewards are such at this level that they don't make great value for lower stakes players.

For higher rollers though, Diamond Empire offers a different prospect and we are going to take a closer look at what this more retro-styled slot, infused with some more modern features, has to offer.

Presentation

It is evident from the high quality of presentation and audio track that accompanies the game that this is a slot which is aimed to impress. The musical accompaniment is nice without being intrusive into the game play and the graphics around the reels are somewhat classically Art Nouveau in their look, although personally I felt they had the look of an ostentatious bank note.

The reels are nicely presented and as there are just the three of them they are easy to see on the screen even on smaller mobile devices. The main controls of the slot are at the foot of the reels and include a bet size indicator, Max Bet and Auto Play buttons as well as the standard spin button.

What is on the reels?

There are just a small number of symbols on the reels in the Diamond Empire slot and these will all be familiar to fans of retro slots. The symbols include Diamonds, Bars (of varying sizes), Red 7s, Cherries and there are also blank spaces on the reels which is why this slot plays as a higher variance game.

The Bars, 7s and Cherries are the lower paying options offering wins of up to 5.33x your bet, although you can combine any selection of Bar symbols to win 0.33 of your bet which is the lowest value win on the game. To make a profit you need to hit at least three of the two-high bar symbols or better.

However, while this does make the base game seem a little dull, things are livened up greatly by the other symbols on the reels both of which trigger a bonus feature where some massive prizes can be won.

Wild features

The 2x Diamond Symbol is the Wild symbol in the game and this also acts as a multiplier too and it can substitute for all the symbols on the reel outlined above apart from the bonus symbol. When the Wild is used to complete a single line win it offers a 2x multiplier on that win. If you landed a regular symbol with two diamond Wild symbols, then your win is multiplier by four.

However, if you can land a line of diamond Wilds across the reels then you get a massive 666.33x your stake win. Furthermore, you can land these symbols stacked on the reels and if you do, the potential for wins are huge with up to 10,000 times your stake available.

This is a massive prize for a 3-reel slot and does help explain why the amount to get the reels spinning is generally low for a higher variance game.

Free Spins or Bonus features

There is no free spins bonus feature on the Diamond Empire slot, but what you do have is a special bonus game. This is triggered when you land three of the Bonus symbols across the reels and when you achieve this, you are given one spin on the special Bonus Wheel.

The Bonus Wheel is rather like the wheel in the Wheel of Fortune TV show in that on it is listed a series of numbers. These numbers are multipliers and on your spin, whatever the pointer lands on, is the amount multiplier you will win times your total stake. Prizes range from smaller amounts of 10x or 12x your stake up to the maximum win of 888x your stake.

Best feature of the Diamond Empire slot

While the Bonus feature is fun and can be exciting, you do tend to find that you only land the smaller value wins when you trigger this bonus, so I think for pure excitement value alone, the 2x Wild Multiplier symbols are the best feature of the slot. There are a number of reasons for this, the potential size of the wins if you can stack the reels with them, the increasing value of multipliers on lower value wins and also that they are immediately accessible in the base game on every spin.

Conclusion

What you have here is a nicely put together retro styled slot which then adds a couple of more modern features into the game to give it a bit of a twist. In that respect, Diamond Empire works well and I think as a whole the slot is nicely put together for a higher variance game. The crowning jewel though is those 2x Diamond Wilds as they can be the key to some of the biggest wins in the game and the fact you can access them direct from the base game is also a real positive. However, patience is most certainly required, along with a healthy bankroll, in order to get the very best out of the slot.
