Relic Seekers slot is Pulse 8 Studio's first game for Microgaming

Microgaming have been busy announcing new development deals with software studios over the last year or so and the result of one of those tie ups is now here. Pulse 8 Studios have been working on an exciting and brand new slot, Relic Seekers, as part of their partnership with Microgaming and now this 5-reel, 25 pay line slot has hit casinos.

The slot is based on an adventurer theme and there are more than a couple of similarities to a few previous slots from Microgaming too. Certainly, if you have played either the Jungle Jim slot or the recent Lara Croft slot, then you will feel there is a certain degree of familiarity with this newer game and the features contained within it.

This new slot is set in ancient Chinese legend in the Huangdi era and it is your quest to try and help the three explorers find the sacred relic. On your way you'll encounter a number of bonus features, as well as rolling reels and even a chance to upgrade symbols into Wilds. So how do these features knit together with the base game and what kind of slot experience does it provide? We took a closer look to find out.

Presentation

The way that the Relic Seeker slot has been presented is very similar to that on other Rolling Reels slots. The decoration around the slot of mechanical machines on the right and top of the reels, as well as the progress meter for Rolling Reels on the left is pretty standard but has been done very nicely in Relic Hunter.

The reels themselves are not strictly reels as the symbols drop down from above into the 5x3 play area of the slot. The soundtrack is simple, quite but all the more effective for it and the sound effects and music that plays when you win is nicely done.

Once nice touch is the flickering effect on the symbols in the game, which makes them appear that they are being lit by firelight. It's only a small touch but it is very nicely done and the effect is excellent.

What is on the reels?

Speaking of the symbols on the reels, there are a number of lower value symbols in the game. These are the different coloured symbols and there are five of these in the game, purple, red, blue, green and yellow. Wins start at three of these symbols across one of the 25 pay lines. Maximum wins range from 4x to 5x your bet on these lower value symbols.

There are four higher value symbols in the game, the dog, the female adventurer, the bearded adventurer and the male adventurer. These offer wins from three symbols too but their top pays are much larger with the maximum being 18x your total bet.

In addition to these symbols there are other non-standard symbols on the reels which relate to some of the key bonus features in the game.

Wild features

The lantern is the Wild symbol in the game and it is also the highest paying symbol you can land across the reels in the base game. Land all five across a single pay line and you will win the top prize which is worth 42x your bet.

However, it is as a Wild that the symbol tends to be of more frequent use to the player as it can substitute for any of the standard symbols on both standard spins and Rolling Reels spins, to help create additional winning lines.

When you land a win, the winning symbols will disappear and be replaced from above by fresh symbols and if you can trigger two Rolling Reels wins in this way, you will start to turn the three explorer symbols Wild. Each two Rolling Reels spins turns one of the three explorer symbols Wild on the reels, which in turn increases your chance of a win.

Indeed, it is through this bonus feature that you tend to find you land the better value wins in the base game, but the flip side of this is that the Rolling Reels feature doesn't really trigger multiple wins very often as a result.

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol is an unusual artifact, one can only assume it is the relic that the adventurers are searching for and when you land three or more of these across the reels, you will win a cash prize of 2x your total bet and also trigger the Free Spins bonus round.

Regardless of how many Scatters you land to trigger the bonus, you receive 10 Free Spins as a result and during free spins, the Collect Keys feature is in operation, where keys can appear on the fifth reel and if you can collect them with your free spins, you can win prizes on top of the standard Free Spins wins you land.

Prizes include additional Free Spins as well as multiplier bonuses on subsequent spins, so they are certainly worth trying to collect in your bonus game.

Once your Free Spins are complete then the game reverts back to the standard base game once you have been paid out.

Best feature of the Relic Seekers slot

With so many varied and unusual features, picking what is the best one on the Relic Seekers slot isn't easy. I do like the Rolling Reels bonus feature and the fact you can turn multiple symbols into Wilds, and when it triggers, it can be very good value for money in terms of the value of your win, but for me it does make the Rolling Reels much more difficult to trigger than on other slots.

The Free Spins bonus is good value but you do need patience to trigger it but you can land some sizeable wins in the game. In truth, I feel both bonuses are equally attractive to players, but as a medium to high variance game, you do need patience in order to access them.

Conclusion

Relic Seekers is a very entertaining slot and certainly a great start to Pulse 8 Studios relationship with Microgaming. The slot is similar to a couple of other Microgaming slots that feature Rolling Reels but it is also different enough, with some creative bonuses, to make it well worth a few spins in its own right.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is an easy game to make money on though as it is a mid to high variance slot and it can take time to earn a decent payout. However, you do feel rewarded when you play the game and its understated graphics and sound make it pleasant to play.

You can play the Relic Seekers slot at any of our Mega Moolah casinos.
