Roar of Thunder slot review: A Casino Rewards exclusive game

One of the nice things about being a member of the Casino Rewards network is that you can play up to three exclusive slot games that are only available at these casinos.

Developed by Microgaming, which is always a sure sign that they are going to be quality offerings, we are taking a look at the first of these games here, called Roar of Thunder.

You can't find free games on Roar of Thunder on your typical review sites, so this is a rare review of a game only Casino Rewards members can play. It is based on a brooding, medieval, thunderstorm theme but with a few fantastical elements thrown in for good measure.

So does Roar of Thunder offer a good enough reason to sign up with a Casino Rewards network casino and enjoy the thrill of this Microgaming slot? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

The dark and brooding skies above the mountains and glens is the setting for the Roar of Thunder slot and it does look rather ominous on screen. Against this backdrop the five reels are set with the main controls of the reels at the foot of the screen. The sound effects on the reels are very nicely done and the game does have excellent and dramatic sound, with a thumping drum beat accompanying you as you play.

It is set in medieval times but with a twist as a Lion as the king. I got a distinct "Game of Thrones" feel from the slot although it has nothing to do with the TV show as far as I am aware, it just has that kind of atmosphere as you play, which no doubt some fans of the show will love, while it will likely leave those not interested in the phenomenon TV hit a little cold.

What is on the reels?

There are a total of eleven standard symbols on the reels and theses offer a range of payouts. The lowest value symbols are the six playing card symbols, the lowest being the 9 and 10 which offer pays from just a fraction of your bet up to just over 11x your bet. Similar values are to be found for the Jack, Queen, King and Ace symbols.

The higher value symbols are the banner, the trumpets, the treasure chest, the ring and the gauntlet, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Infinity Gauntlet in the Avengers Endgame film. Wins on these range from just over your total bet to around 80x your total bet.

The reason we are saying around these figures is because the Roar of Thunder slot doesn't base its wins on exact multiples of your bet size and as such, you can't really express them in this way. This is a bit of a nuisance for reviewers to be honest, but it doesn't really have much of an impact on how the game plays or pays. That said, if you like to keep tabs on how much you could win compared to your spend, you may need to break out your calculator for this game.

Wild features

The Lion King symbol, no not the famous Simba from the Disney cartoon epic, is the Wild and this can serve two purposes. Firstly, it can be used to substitute for other symbols in the game to help create winning lines across the reels, especially when you can land the symbol on more than one reel. However, this doesn't happen very often, so it is a real bonus when it does.

Rarer still are when you land two or more Wild symbols in a line across the reels from left to right as this triggers some of the much better value wins in the base game with the two highest wins by a considerable distance being won when you land four or five Wilds across the reels on a single pay line.

Free Spins features

The Emerald gemstone is the Scatter symbol and this can be landed anywhere across the five reels on any spin. If you land two of these symbols then you will win 2x your total bet as a cash prize. Land three or more then you win a greater value cash prize and trigger the Free Spins bonus feature.

Three Scatters sees you land 5x your total bet, while four Scatters wins you 20x your bet and land all five to claim a massive 2000x your bet as the top prize. Furthermore, regardless of how many Scatters you land, you will also trigger 15 Free Spins.

During your Free Spins bonus, all wins are subject to a 3x multiplier and you can also re-trigger the bonus at any point during your Free Spins games.

Best feature of the Roar of Thunder slot

Although I like the Wild symbol in Roar of Thunder, there is no doubt that the Free Spins bonus, though sometimes difficult to trigger, is where the real fun is at. The reason for that is primarily the fact that all wins come with a 3x multiplier during this bonus so you can hit some sizeable wins here more-so than in the base game.

Conclusion

There are a lot of little things to like about the Roar of Thunder slot. The presentation is excellent and the game play is engaging enough. The Free Spins bonus can be very rewarding and some of the top jackpot prizes are excellent. There are a few niggles though, the odd payout calculations being one, as is the fact that with 9 pay lines all bets are multiples of nine, which does tend to mess up your bankroll if you like to keep it clean and tidy. Wins can also be on the small side too in the base game at times, but despite this, it is a fun and enjoyable slot to play a few spins on from time to time.

You can play the Roar of Thunder slot at any of the casinos on our Rewards page.
