Slip on the spandex and grapple with the newest slot Lucha Legends!
The world of Mexican wrestling is vibrant, colourful, dramatic, spectacular and often embellished with plenty of corny backstories. It's like the WWE in the US, only even gaudier and just as popular with the 100 million plus people that call Mexico home.
The theme has been covered in slots before, but Lucha Legends is Microgaming's move into this popular world and my goodness me, what a breathless offering this brand-new slot is. With the crazy mariachi beat the perfect backdrop for what is one of the brightest and most cheerful slots I have seen from the company in many years.
In Mexico, the most popular wrestlers can become legends, attracting thousands of spectators to their shows and millions more on television. It is these legends of the game that have been the inspiration for Lucha Legends.
So how does this 25-line slot with five reels shape up? Let's take a closer look at the slot and find out.

I have to say that I am hugely impressed with the presentation of the Lucha Legends slot, or rather with one particular part of it. The basic game is rather ordinary to look at. The backdrop is a wrestling ring, which I would have expected but there's no backdrop beyond that to get you excited. I would have maybe liked to have seen some wrestlers in the ring, animated perhaps, or a crowd that is animated, watching the action unfold in the squared circle.
The five reels sit overlaying the ring and these are nicely done, the main controls are at the foot of the screen as is customary on Microgaming slots and you can control the size of your bet. Lines are fixed at 25 but you can alter the size of your bet per spin from 0.25 up to 37.50.
However, there is also a Power Up Mode, which you can access for double your standard stake. When you activate this mode, it does have a positive effect on one of the key features of the slot (the Super Wild feature, which we will explain more about below).
The really dynamic and exciting part of the slot is the music however. You have a gentle song playing before you spin the reels, a more exciting quicker paced song while you spin and then if you hit Free Spins, you are assaulted by a mariachi crossed with trance music pumping track that really sets the blood pumping through your veins.
What is on the reels?
There are a total of ten standard symbols on the reels and these start with the four playing card symbols, the Jack, Queen, King and Ace and these offer pays ranging from very small payouts (that are much less than your stake), to a win of 3x to 4x your stake if you land five of one of the symbols across the reels.
Accompanying the lower value symbols are the medium paying symbols and these are the referee, the very attractive female who displays the round of the wrestling match. These offer wins from around 1/5 of your total bet for three on a pay line, up to 6x your stake for five across a line.
The top paying symbols are the four different wrestler symbols (El Diablo, Martio, Burro and the tag team pairing of Sal and Pepe) and these four symbols offer wins ranging from 0.10 coins (at the minimum bet of 0.25) up to a maximum win of 12x your stake for five across the pay line.
One thing to note is that while the smaller wins are very small, the symbols are stacked on the reels and it is possible to land several winning lines from a single spin, which can increase the value of that win considerably.
The first thing to note is that there is a Wild symbol in the base game and this is the Lucha Legends logo. If you manage to land this Wild symbol as part of a win in the base game then it will trigger the Super Wild mode. This will see one of the wrestlers trigger their signature move onto the symbol and you will then receive a 2x or 3x multiplier on top of the standard win, to increase the overall value of the win. Alternatively, you can also see an additional two Wild symbols added to the reels which can trigger additional or bigger value wins.
If you trigger the Power Up mode in the game, then when you trigger the Super Wild bonus you will receive a 3x or 5x multiplier on the Standard Win and you also will see four additional Wilds added to the reels should the other bonus trigger. In addition, with the Power Up mode enabled, the Super Wild feature triggers a lot more often than it does without the feature enabled.
Free Spins features
The Free Spins feature on the Lucha Legends slot is triggered when you land the Wrestling Belt Scatter symbol on the first, third and fifth reels on a single spin. This then triggers 10 Free Spins. During your bonus, if you land the three Scatters in sequence again, you will re-trigger the bonus game with 10 more Free Spins. Land just two Scatters, and you will receive one more additional Free Spin.
During Free Spins any Wild landing on the reels will become a Superb Wild. This can lead to a multiplier being applied to the win of up to 5x (if Power Up Mode is enabled) and up to four additional Wilds added to the reels if the other bonus is selected.
Best feature of the Lucha Legends slot
Without doubt the key to the Lucha Legends slot is whether or not you should play with the Power Up Mode enabled and having played the game in normal mode and Power Up Mode, I feel that it is far more exciting and worth the extra cost to play it with the mode activated. Not only do you access the Super Wild mode more often but if you can hit Free Spins, then the potential wins in these rounds can be significantly higher.
Lucha Legends is one of the most enjoyable Microgaming slots I have played in a while. It perfectly captures the colourful, vivid and exciting world of Mexican wrestling and the music is among the best I have heard on any slot game for a long time. The bonus features are also enjoyable, especially in Power Up Mode, and this is a game I would certainly recommend, especially if you intend to play with the Power Up Mode in play.
