The new Fortunium slot can land you a massive Microgaming prize!

The steampunk theme has been the inspiration behind a number of slot games recently, and in truth, they have been a hit and miss bunch. However, Microgaming's newest offering is a considerable deviation away from the norm and as such, it is going to be interesting to see exactly what it has to offer.

It's been a long wait since the Fortunium slot was first announced by Microgaming but it was finally released into casinos this month.

This is not a typical Microgaming offering as it has a much broader 5x5 reel set up, which means 25 symbols in play on each spin, rather than just the standard 15. With more options, there are of course more pay lines, with 40 non-selectable lines in play. The good news is that all lines don't' need to be covered individually, with the minimum bet being just 0.10.

Part of the new look may be because Microgaming teamed up with Stormcraft Studios to develop the game and the final result does look rather futurisitic and spectacular, but also with a slightly retro-theme. In truth the opening screen, reminded me of the Fritz Lang classic Metropolis.

Let's take a closer look at this medium variance slot and see how it looks and plays.

The presentation of the Fortunium slot is certainly eye-catching. The reels are set against the backdrop of a futuristic city, but with a certain Victorian-styling that fits in perfectly with the steampunk theme. The city is bathed in a watery orange/yellow light and mist permeates the streets add to this an atmospheric soundtrack and its clear the team put a lot of work in how this slot looks.

The five-by-five reel set is located in the centre of the screen and the controls are very simple to follow. There's a coin button, which allows you to increase or decrease the value of your bet and there is also the spin button you can access.

To the left of the reels is the Win Booster button which you can select on or off per spin. This feature will boost the Mystery Symbols in the game (which are stacked on the reels) and when activated, the feature will only reveal Wilds or High Value symbols on the reel. This feature comes at a price of 50% more per spin (so if you bet the minimum, it would be 0.15 per spin, rather than 0.10).

With the Win Booster button deactivated, the two different Mystery Symbols will reveal Wilds or any low or high value symbol, but your bet will be 50% less. It is entirely up to the player whether they elect to play using the Win Booster feature or not.

What is on the reels?

There are a number of different low and high value symbols on the reels. The lower value symbols are the four playing card symbols, Club, Spade, Heart and Diamond and the relative pay outs increase in value in that order. However, it is worth noting that the wins for three and four symbols on a line are generally considerably smaller than your standard bet and even five symbol wins don't pay out much more.

Better pays are available with the higher value symbols which are the gun, the airship and the treasure chest, but again the pays are not particularly huge with wins of up to 4x your total stake possible.

Those wins don't sound huge but standard symbols are stacked two high on the reels and this can result in multiple wins across multiple lines, especially when used in conjunction with Wild symbols.

The higher paying symbols are the two characters Maximilian and Victoria and these are stacked up to five high on the reels and these offer pay outs of just over 5x your total bet if you land five across the reels on a single line, however with these symbols being stacked five high, the chances of winning across a greater number of lines is increased.

There are a couple of other symbols on the reels to take note of which are linked to the main bonus features of the slot.

Wild features

The Wild symbol is the golden 'W' symbol and this can be used as a substitute for any of the lower or higher value symbols outlined above. In addition, it offers a chance at the highest value win if you can land five across the reels as you will win just over 12x your stake. Smaller wins are available for 2, 3 and 4 wilds on a line.

Similar to the Wild symbol are the two Mystery Symbols, which are both boxes with a '?' symbol on. These mystery symbols are super-stacked on the reels and when landed on the reels any symbols will change to one of the symbols on the reels. If you have the Win Booster activated, only the higher value symbols or Wilds will be randomly selected.

Free Spins features

The strange looking Green button symbol is the in game Scatter and this awards pays for landing between two and five across the reels, with greater pay outs for four and five symbols. Three or more Scatters landed on the reels also triggers the Free Spins bonus game.

During Free Spins you receive 10 chances to spin the reels and depending on how many Scatters landed, you will have one, two or three of the middle reels all become Mystery Reels. Three Scatters sees one Mystery Reel, four has two and five has all three middle reels activated as Mystery Reels.

These reels will display the same random symbol on each spin and give you a great chance of landing a better value win of up to 100,000 coins.

Furthermore, if you land a Scatter symbol on the reels during Free Spins, you will also receive a further Free Spin added to your total.

Best feature of the Fortunium slot

It is great to see that Microgaming in conjunction with Stormcraft have produced such an innovative and exciting new slot that is a real deviation from their usual offering. The bonus features work nicely and the Free Spins bonus also offers a chance at some very high value wins. For me though, the Win Booster is a high premium to pay for what it offers and I preferred to take my chances with this feature off, although some players will love the fact it increases the chances of a bigger value win.

It's been a little while since Fortunium was first announced by Microgaming in February at ICE 2018 - a B2B gaming event held yearly at ExCel London - but it has been worth the wait. Microgaming's latest offering looks fantastic, is radically different to their usual output and has a number of good bonus features which make the game fun to play. My one gripe is the small value of a high percentage of wins, but that is mitigated by the occasional big win you'll land to boost your balance. Overall, this is a fine game, well worth a play and certainly one to try if you are a fan of innovative slots, or this particular genre.
