There can be only one : Play the Highlander slot from Microgaming

With an electrifying soundtrack devised by rock legends Queen, Highlander was one of the smash hit successes of 1986.

It starred Frenchman Christoph Lambert as kinsman Connor MacLeod while famous Scot Sean Connery adopted the role of Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, a Spaniard. The nationalities may have been a bit muddled, but this fantasy epic proved a huge hit and spawned several sequels plus a successful TV series.

We have had to wait over thirty years since the release of the original film, but now the Highlander slot has been finalised and released across a number of our top Microgaming casinos and it is a game that rather like the film itself, is all about the top prize, which is a whopping 3,416 times your total stake on every spin!

So is this a slot that you can lose your head over and go a little crazy at times, or is this a game that will make you feel like you are going to need immortality to get the better of when playing it? Let's take a closer look and find out for ourselves.

The slot itself takes place in the two key locations from the film. You begin in the base game in a Scottish glen, with foreboding skies overhead and purple mountains stretching off into the distance. However, when you trigger the Free Spins bonus game, you will be transported to 1986 New York to play through your bonus. Both these locations are very beautifully presented and are faithful to the original film.

If there is one thing that is a little disappointing it is the musical accompaniment to the game. Instead of the original Queen soundtrack they have come up with a soundalike version of some of the key songs from the film. Ordinarily this fine on a slot game, but it's a bit disappointing - however this doesn't make the game any lesser in terms of game-play. I am sure you will still enjoy this slot.

What is on the reels?

On the reels as the lower value symbols are a series of playing card symbols from 10 through to the Ace. These offer generally smaller value wins of a fraction of what you wager for 3 and 4 symbols wins, with just a small profit on any lines that contain five symbols.

Its better value on the higher value symbols on the reels which are all based on characters from the film. There is Heather, Brenda, the fearsome Kurgan, Connor MacLeod is also present in his two most prominent guises, the Highlander and also as Russel Nash, the New York antiques dealer.

Wins with these symbols involving three symbols are small, but four and five symbols offer decent pay outs of over 12.5x your stake. There are two other symbols on the reels, the Wild and Scatter and these access the main bonus features of the slot which we will look at in more detail below.

Wild features

The Highlander logo is the Wild symbol in the game and you can win decent returns if you land three, four or five of the Wild symbols on a line across the reels. In addition, of course, the Wild also substitutes for any of the higher or lower value symbols outlined above to help you land winning pay lines in both the base game and also during the Free Spins bonus.

There is another Wild feature which is triggered when you land two Highlander Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels as these will not offer a pay-out but do convert into Wild symbols to give you a chance of landing a win this way.

Free Spins features

The Highlander broché is the Scatter symbol and landing three, four or five of these across the reels triggers a 1x, 10x, or 100x your stake win before you trigger your Free Spins bonus. For this bonus you get a total of 10 Free Spins regardless of how many Scatter landed and the backdrop for the slot changes to a modern day New York City.

During the Free Spins bonus, you have the Quickening Wilds feature in play. This means lightning can strike and turn any of the positions on the reels Wild during any Free Spin. Each time the Quickening Wilds strike, you get an increasing number of Wilds on the reels. Thus increasing the chances of you landing a better value you win the more you manage to trigger the feature.

Free Spins cannot be re-triggered from within the bonus round however.

Best feature of the Highlander slot

It is worth noting at this point that Highlander is a medium variance game and it isn't so easy to land some of the bigger value wins on the slot at times and you do need to play through the base game a while at times to trigger the bonus features, however when you do it is usually worth your wait. The Free Spins bonus game is definitely the best feature of the slot and can lead to some sizeable wins, especially if you can set that Quickening Wilds feature going on the majority of your spins. When that happens some bigger value wins can be found.

The quality of the visuals and characters on the reels also deserves praise as these are both faithful to the film and superbly animated.

Microgaming's Highlander isn't as complicated a slot as I would have originally thought. There are just two bonus features and they are relatively commonplace, although the Quickening Wilds in the Free Spins bonus round is a nice touch and adds some real potential for big wins to the bonus. It is nicely presented, but the lack of the original soundtrack will not impress fans of the film. If you can get past that, this is a simple slot to play and enjoy, although as a medium variance slot, it can take a bit of a bite out of your bankroll at times.
