Titans of the Sun Hyperion slot: Will it fly or come crashing down to earth?
Hyperion was one of the children of Gaia and Uranus in Greek mythology and eventually took over the rule of the earth from his parents along with his other children, before he was eventually ousted by Olympians, Zeus, Apollo, Athena, Hera and so forth.
Greek mythology is awash with these tales of familial strife and rebellion and they offer a rich source of inspiration for slot companies seeking to develop a new slot game that will have instant appeal to players.
The high variance Titans of the Sun - Hyperion slot is one of two slots released in the same style, the other being based on Hyperion's sister Theia. The slots are very similar in many respects, with just a couple of cosmetic differences between the two, chiefly in terms of the size and make-up of the prizes on offer in each slot.
We are going to review the other game in the series too, so keep your eyes peeled for that, but for now let's take a closer look at how the Titans of the Sun - Hyperion slot shapes up.

Presentation
The backdrop to the Titans of the Sun - Hyperion slot is a rather grand Mediterranean scene with large marble temples set atop of cliffs that tumble down to the azure waters of the sea, all underneath a dominating blue sky. It is a rather nice set up and I like the way the reels are transparent so you can enjoy more of the view.
The sound is a little disappointing with just basic sound effects in use as you spin the reels. I was hoping for something a little more grand than the odd sound effect when you land a win on the reels but unfortunately you only get a true sense of grandeur when you land one of the wins in the game.
The slot is set up with all the main controls at the bottom and the 15 pay lines are not selectable. It is a simple approach to a slot, but it is one that will be entirely familiar to Microgaming players.
What is on the reels?
There are a number of different symbols on the reels and some unusual ones too. The lower value symbols are the playing card symbols which range from the 10 through to the Ace. You can land wins of between 1/3 your total bet and up to 6.6x your total bet with these symbols.
There are just three higher value symbols on the reels and these are the phoenix, the flying horse and Hyperion himself. These offer wins from just over 1x your bet up to 133x your bet.
However, there is another symbol on the reels which is stacked and this is the Mystery Symbol. When this symbol lands on the reel it will transform into one of the standard symbols in the base game. Regardless of how many Mystery symbols you land, they will all transform into the same random symbol and of course, this can lead to some of the bigger value base game wins.
Wild features
The Titans of the Sun logo is the in game Wild and this can be found anywhere across the reels on any spin. The Wild acts as a substitute for any of the standard symbols on the reels, although it does not apply any multiplier when it is part of a win.
However, if you land three, four or five of the Wilds on a single pay line, then you can win the biggest value prizes in the base game, this can range from 3.33x your total bet, to up to 333x your total bet. The only symbol that the Wild cannot substitute for is the Scatter, which we will explore in more detail below.
Free Spins features
To access the Free Spins feature on the Titans of the Sun - Hyperion slot, you need to land three of the Scatter symbols on the reels. This is the picture of a male and female god lofted into the sky and if you land two or more of these, you will win a cash prize based on your total bet (ranging from 1x to 100x your bet).
If you land three or more Scatters however, you trigger the Free Spins bonus round and int his bonus you get 15 Free Spins and you can re-trigger this bonus by landing three or more Scatters on the reels once again during your bonus spins.
During Free Spins, any time you land a Mystery Symbol, not only can in convert into one of the low or high value standard symbols, but in Free Spins it can also turn into a Wild symbol, which offers you a better chance of some of the higher value wins.
Best feature of the Titans of the Sun - Hyperion slot
There are a number of features that are worth noting on this higher variance slot game. I like the mystery symbol bonus, but it does have a slightly frustrating issue for me which is it can sometimes turn into a random symbol that doesn't help the player, but hinders them. However, when it works out well, it can produce some sizeable wins. The Free Spins though are the main bonus feature of the slot and the most lucrative aspect of the game, although they can be tricky to hit with any regularity and the size of the wins you get in the bonus game does vary considerably.
Conclusion
Titans of the Sun - Hyperion is the game that offers a slightly smaller jackpot size (75,000) compared to the other slot in the series, Theia, but it does offer a chance of a better return in the base game. It is a very high variance slot though, so you need patience and deep pockets to get the best out of the game but if you are patient and enjoy this particular type of slot, you will find plenty to enjoy from this 2016 release.
