Treasure Skyland slot's great bonus features tend to trigger frequently
Robert Louis Stevenson most famous book arguably is Treasure Island and few will forget the famous character Long John Silver and his talking parrot from the book. Well, Just For The Win have taken that basic premise and given it a simian-inspired twist, as well as moving the adventure from the high seas, up into the air in their newest slot release Treasure Skyland.
This higher variance slot can be played from just 0.10 per spin but you can really ramp up the action up to 200.00 per game if that is more your thing. There is an exciting new way to trigger bonuses too thanks to the Feature Frame addition to the base game, of which we will explain more later.
So stick on an eye patch, grab a parrot and get ready for an adventure as we take a closer look at the most recent Microgaming release.

Presentation
The presentation of the Treasure Skyland slot is, as you would expect from a Just For The Win game, absolutely excellent. The idea of taking the Treasure Island story, changing the characters to animals and then getting them to adventure in the sky, rather than at sea, is an unusual one but it works exceptionally well and the real reason for that is the excellent presentation.
The sound is superb and really sets the atmosphere and tone of the slot, which is a cheery Caribbean feel. The graphics and animations on the reels and backdrops are very nicely done and easy on the eye and it is easy to see what is happening on smaller screen devices too, which makes the game perfectly adaptable onto a mobile device.
What is on the reels?
The reels are prominently displayed on the screen and they have a number of higher and lower value symbols on them. The lower value symbols are five of the playing card symbols, although each has been made to look like a coin. They range from the 10 through to the Ace and they offer wins ranging from 0.3x your bet up to a top prize of 8x your bet.
The higher value symbols on the reels include some of the characters in the story and they are three different types of monkey plus the Treasure Skyland logo. Wins on the monkey symbols range from 0.8x your bet up to 17.5x your bet if you can land five of the highest value female captain monkey across all five reels on a single pay line.
The Treasure Skyland logo is the highest value symbol in the standard base game and wins on this range from 1.5x your bet up to 20x your bet if you can land a line of five across the reels.
Wild features
In addition to the standard symbols on the reels outlined above, there is also a Wild symbol on the reels. This is in the form of a treasure map and this can be used in two ways in the game. Firstly, the Wild can land anywhere across the reels and when it does it can be a substitute symbol for any of the symbols outlined above to help create a winning line.
However, you can also land between three and five Wilds across the reels from left to right and if you do then you can trigger a payout based on Wilds alone. These match the highest value symbol in the base game (the Treasure Skyland Logo) and wins range from 1.5x your bet up to 20x your bet.
Free Spins features
There is no dedicated Free Spins bonus game on the Treasure Skyland slot, but what the game does have instead is a Feature Reel and a Feature Frame symbol and we will explain how the latter works first.
The Feature Frame symbol is overlaid on the reels and for each spin, it can move on the reels to a different position. The symbol is see through and is in the shape of a ships wheel. If you manage to land a winning pay line that runs through the Feature Frame symbol, then this can be what is termed a triggering pay line.
When this occurs, you then get to spin the Feature Reel. This reel is decked out with a number of different bonus features which can be selected when you spin the reel, each of which will have an effect on the amount you could potentially win from that spin.
The different features are listed below:
- 2x, 3x and 4x Multipliers Feature - The reel contains 2x, 3x and 4x multipliers which can be landed on the spin and as you would expect, any wins landed on your triggering spin would then be subject to the multiplier value that you have landed.
- Symbol Upgrade Feature - This feature is the block with three arrows pointing upwards on it and when you land this bonus, the symbols on the triggering pay line are automatically upgraded to a higher value symbol according to the paytable and it will then pay you the highest possible combination for those new symbols.
- Win Extend Feature - This is the cross sign and when this occurs if you have a three-symbol triggering pay line then either one or two Wilds will be added to that line to increase the value of the win. If you landed a four-symbol triggering pay line then just one Wild will be added to increase the value of the win.
- Symbols to Wild Feature - When this bonus is triggered all the symbols on the triggering pay line will turn into Wild symbols and offer a pay out at the highest rate in the base game.
- Pick Bonus Feature - This is a selection game where you get to pick 5 items from 15 displayed on screen. Each item you pick will award a prize and some items can award you an additional pick as well as a prize. The further you can get through the 15 available picks, the greater the value of the cash prize you can win (up to 1000x your stake is available if you can complete the bonus game).
Best feature of the Treasure Skyland slot
There's a lot to like with the Treasure Skyland slot. The game itself is beautifully realised and imaginative, but for me it is the bonus features accessed by the Feature Frame and Feature Reel that really give the game an added edge. The good thing is that these do tend to trigger relatively frequently although the size of the wins that you land in the bonuses does vary considerably and can be very small as well as larger value wins.
Conclusion
As a take on the famous Treasure Island story, Treasure Skyland is a clever and inventive slot and one that you will certainly come back to play again. The lack of Free Spins is perhaps its biggest drawback but the new way of doing the bonus features works very well in the game and does make every spin exciting. It is a higher variance game so you do need patience to get the best out of it, but it is a game that will reward those efforts with some innovative and clever game-play.
