Twice the Diamonds slot's Free Spins bonus round is the real diamond

There are many companies that release games under the Microgaming Content Aggregator platform and Ainsworth Interactive are one such company. Their latest release is Twice the Diamonds, a new 5x3 reel, 40 pay line slot which can be played from a rather expensive 1.20 per spin up to 48.00 per spin.

Based on a bank vault theme, this slot doesn't really have great kerb appeal to be honest and looks rather simplistic. Almost as if it had been designed 10 years ago and not really embellished any since. But often, behind that can lie a very playable slot, so we decided to take a look at Twice the Diamonds to see how much it shines.

Here's what we found.

Presentation

The setting for the Twice the Diamonds slot is a bank vault although it is one of the more ostentatious vaults I have seen with diamonds encrusted in the outside of it. The main controls of the slot are at the foot of the reels although I have to say that they are a little small and it is difficult to make out some of the data, such as your balance and the number of lines especially when you are playing from a mobile device.

You have a pretty standard 5x3 reel set up and the musical accompaniment to the game is somewhat basic, with a simple song repeated on a loop and just slot sound effects used in the main game. I was expecting a little more to be honest and I feel that the slot does look a little older than it actually is due to the rather limited work gone into the presentation of the game.

Some of the animations when you win on the reels, especially in the Free Spins round are nicely done, but overall, this is a slot that is a little underwhelming on first impressions.

What is on the reels?

There are a mix of symbols on the reels in the base game, including six playing card low symbols that range from the 9 through to the Ace. These offer a range of wins from 1/6 of your bet up to 2.5 times your bet.

The mid value symbols are mainly different types of gemstones and these offer better value wins ranging from 0.5x your bet up to 5x your bet. There are five of these stones in the game, the purple triangular stone, the green pear-shaped stone, the pink square stone. Two gemstones are of higher value in the game, the yellow heart stone and the diamond and these offer wins ranging from 0.8x your bet up to 10x your bet.

Alongside these symbols there are a Wild symbol and a Scatter symbol which are linked in with the main features of the slot.

Wild features

The Vault door symbol is the in game Wild and this can land on third, fourth and fifth reels in the base game and can be stacked on those reels. The symbol acts as a substitute for the standard symbols only in the game. However, it does have more options available in the Free Spins bonus round.

Free Spins features

The Free Spins bonus round is triggered when you land three or more of the Twice the Diamonds Scatters on any spin. This will trigger 10 Free Spins. During Free Spins, the value of the symbols on the reel decreases in value, but the reason for that is because there are different Wild bonus features in this part of the game.

The Standard Wild appears on the second and fourth reel but when landed will become a Sticky Wild and will remain in place for the remainder of the Free Spins. Furthermore, there is a Multiplier Wild on the third reel, which is stacked. This pays out a multiplier on the first four Free Spins of x2, which then increases to x5 for the 5th to 8th Free Spins and for any subsequent spins, the multiplier is 8x.

Each time you land two or more Scatters during Free Spins, you will also receive three more Free Spins added to your total. It is by landing the Sticky Wilds in combination with the Multplier Wilds and the higher value symbols in particular, or with multiple symbols across multiple winning lines, that you can land some of the better value wins in the Free Spins bonus.

Best feature of the Twice the Diamonds slot

There is no doubt that the Free Spins bonus round is the real diamond in the crown of the Twice the Diamonds slot. The base game, is good fun and it is unusual to have a base game which pays more per standard win than the Free Spins. However it is the addition of those Sticky Wilds and Wild Multipliers in the Free Spins round, plus the ability to land more Free Spins thanks to the Scatter bonus in that part of the game, that really makes this the most appealing part of the slot and which can see you land some great value wins.

Conclusion

There is a decent slot game in the Twice the Diamonds slot from Ainsworth, but I think this is one of the weaker companies in the Microgaming Content Aggregator group. Their slots are somewhat basic looking and the presentation of them isn't up to the standard of other slots with some rather niggly aspects, the information being too small, the pays being listed in an incorrect order with the 10 listed before the 9 (again!) being examples. The slot is playable and can be good fun, but these niggly aspects to detract away from your enjoyment of the game and that is a pity. A bit more thought into the presentation and style of the slot and this would have been a much more appealing game.
