We review Microgaming's latest medival themed Cash of Kingdoms slot

Cash of Kingdoms slot

The Medieval period of history was an age of myth and mystery, and great wealth for the lucky few and hardship for the many. Invading forces moved across the globe to colonise the lands and many different legends sprung up over this time.

It's unsurprising that such an era has spawned so many popular forms of entertainment, even the wildly popular TV show Game of Thrones has its roots in this particular era. Many slot games, such as the Avalon and Thunderstruck series also have their roots in these times, while of course, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail is undoubtedly the best known comedy films set during times of Arthurian legend.

To add to this, we now have a new slot game, Cash of Kingdoms. The eagerly awaited first game produced for Microgaming in their new partnership by Slingshot Studios. First previewed at ExCel London at the ICE Totally Gaming 2018 expo, the release of the slot may have taken longer than anticipated, but it is now here and ready to play.

So, what does this new slot have to offer for slot enthusiasts? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

Slingshot have decided to take a cartoon-based approach to the presentation style of the Cash of Kingdom's slot and it works very well, so much so that at times you get the feeling that the characters have been lifted from a PC or console game. The slot is bright and cheerful and has the obligatory castle as the main backdrop to the game, which is de rigueur for medieval-themed slots nowadays.

Alongside the eye-catching graphics and animations, there is a suitably heroic soundtrack accompanying the game that also features a number of sound effects when you trigger certain wins and bonuses. These are nicely done and the music does give the slot a somewhat grand scale and matches the high quality presentation of the graphics.

So, the Cash of Kingdoms slot certainly looks and sounds great, but how does it actually play?

What is on the reels?

There are ten standard symbols on the reels and there are five lower value symbols, and these are easy to recognise as the artefacts in the game. This includes treasure, barrels of gunpowder, bows and arrows, spell books and swords and shields. As you would expect, these tend to offer the lower value wins in the game but are triggered the most frequently.

The higher value symbols are the five character symbols and they are the Rogue, Bombardier, Archer, Mage and Knight symbols. These offer higher value wins, with the Knight being the highest of the five in terms of value as it offers wins of 10x your stake for five across a pay line. Both the low and higher value symbols can be stacked up to two symbols high, offering the potential of multiple line wins on a spin.

While the winning line jackpot is just 80 coins, the overall jackpot which can be won using Wild features and across multiple lines means a theoretical jackpot of over 100,000 could be won, which means that this slot will certainly attract players chasing a larger jackpot prize. However as a lower variance game, you will find that you tend to win smaller amounts more often.

Alongside the standard symbols on the reels there are two other symbols, the Scatter and the Wild which link in with the two main bonus features on the slot.

Wild features

The main Wild symbol in the game is the Cash of Kingdoms logo and it is only found on the middle three reels of the game. The Wild symbols are stacked on those three reels and can land in more than one spot, or completely covering the reels.

The Wilds can substitute for standard symbols to create winning pay lines, but it is when you land a Stacked Wild on the second or fourth reel that the game gets interesting as you can trigger the first bonus feature of the game Invading Wilds.

Land a full stack of Wilds on reels 2 and 4 and the Stacked Wilds will spread to an adjoining reel, turning that reel Wild. Better still, if you can land both reels 2 and 4 as Stacked Wilds in full, then you will turn the third reel completely Wild too and this can lead to some of the massive multiple-line winning pay outs that are available in the Cash of Kingdoms slot.

Free Spins features

The other key bonus feature of the slot is the Free Spins bonus game and this is triggered by landing three of the Scatter symbols on the middle three reels on a single spin. When you do, you receive 10 Free Spins.

During your free spins the Invading Wilds feature is in operation and can lead to some sizeable wins during Free Spins as each of the stacks of Wilds on the reels is increased in size to offer you a better chance of landing them.

Should you land stacks on the second and fourth reels, you will not only turn the middle reel entirely Wild too, but you will also receive a 2x multiplier on that win, which can massively increase the value of a win and this is where the game's biggest jackpot prizes lie.

A nice touch is that during Free Spins, every additional Scatter you land on the reel will also give you one more additional free spin each time you land one.

Best feature of the Cash of Kingdoms slot

There are a number of top features in the Cash of Kingdoms slot that are worth a look. The Invading Wilds feature certainly livens up the base game, but it is during Free Spins that it can really pay some big dividends for the player, especially if you can land two stacks on the second and fourth reel and trigger that 2x multiplier doubling your win.

Conclusion

Cash of Kingdoms is a solid start for the Slingshot Studos/Microgaming partnership. It has a number of interesting features and is nicely presented, but perhaps lacks a little of the dynamism of some of the company's other recent releases. Still, it is a fun low variance slot to play and with a massive range of bets available, it is suitable for lower stakes players as well as higher rollers.
