We sphinx these are the best Egyptian-themed slots by Microgaming

Ancient Egyptian culture is a fertile breeding ground for slot developers. So rich is that particular period of history with its myths, famous buildings and relics, famous people throughout history and the fact that this particular period in our history is still a source of great fascination today, make it the perfect subject for slot games.

It is perhaps unsurprising that as a result, Ancient Egypt is one of the most plundered subjects of modern times when it comes to slot gaming and across all casinos, there are well over 100 different games to pick from a wide variety of different developers.

However, we are only looking for the best of the best when it comes to Egyptian slot games and in particular those that have been developed by the brains at Microgaming, who have brought you plenty of classic slots throughout the years including Thunderstruck II, Break Da Bank Again and of course, the amazing Mega Moolah progressive.

It's fair to say that Microgaming's more varied output than some of its competitors means that it doesn't have as many Egyptian themed games to pick from as some of the others. However that is not a bad thing when you consider the quality of the four top slots that they have released.

Let's now take a look at each, looking at the major details of the game that make it so playable and enjoyable and why they sit at the apex of the Egyptian slot pyramid!

Treasure Nile

  • Reels - 5
  • Pay Lines - 9
  • Min Bet - 4.50
  • Max Bet - 4.50
  • Jackpot - Progressive Jackpot
  • Free Spins Bonus - No

If you are looking for a Microgaming Egyptian themed slot that offers something different to the four games above then don't forget to check out the superb progressive jackpot game Treasure Nile. This is a very simplistic game as there are no free spins bonuses, no randomly triggered bonus features or progressive prizes and no wide range of bets.

Each spin costs 4.50 as you need to wager 0.50 on each of the nine pay lines to play. The reels comprise of the usual mix of Egyptian themed items including an ankh, the head of the god Anubis, a parchment with hieroglyphics scribed onto it, a ship and of course, the sphinx, which is the top paying standard symbol offering a 3,000-coin jackpot.

To help you land wins there is a Wild symbol, which is a sunset picture of the Pyramids close to the River Nile, which allows you to substitute the Wild for any standard symbol. There's also a Scatter symbol, the scarab beetle, which allows you to land wins of up to 50 times your total bet if you land between three and five across the reels.

To win the biggest jackpot prize on the slot, you need to land five of the King Tutankhamun death mask symbols across a single line. This results in a win of 6,000 coins unless you land the winning line on the ninth pay line in which case you trigger the progressive jackpot prize.

The good news is that the Treasure Nile progressive jackpot game is won relatively frequently, indeed since the start of April 2018, it has been won a total of seven times, the largest win in that time being a prize of £203,864. The slot has also paid out four £300,000+ jackpot prizes including the biggest ever Treasure Nile payout of £360,506 which was won on the 23 December 2012.

All five of these slot games capture the essence of Ancient Egypt quite beautifully but also offer the gamer a chance to play a number of different slots based on a similar theme, each with a different challenge and set of bonuses.

Isis (Egyptian Goddess)

  • Reels - 5
  • Pay Lines - 5
  • Min Bet - 0.01 (0.25 for min bet on all lines)
  • Max Bet - 250
  • Jackpot - 600,000
  • Free Spins Bonus - Yes

Perhaps the most unfortunately named of Microgaming's slot given the current goings on in the Middle East and North Africa, Isis was released well before Islamic State appropriated the name for itself. Isis was the Egyptian Goddess of health, marriage and wisdom and it is this mythology which permeates through this popular Microgaming slots, viewed by many as one of the classic five-reel games developed by the company.

This 5x3 reel slot has a total of 25 selectable lines and you can wager coins from 0.01 up to 0.50 per line and up to 10 coins per line. That gives you a very large betting range of between 0.01 (or 0.25 if you want to play all line at the minimum bet) up to 250.00 per spin.

The slot is presented in a somewhat simplistic manner but has some cracking features in the game that really make it appeal to players. Land five Wilds for example, and you can earn a big 10,000-coin win, four Wilds gives you a sizeable 2,000 coin win - that's more than you get on a jackpot on some games.

However, the real excitement comes when you trigger the Free Spins by landing three or more of the scatters on the reels. Here you win 20, 25 or 30 Free Spins (depending on the number of scatters landed) and each spin has a 6x multiplier attacked, giving you a chance of a massive 600,000-coin jackpot prize.

With wins of up to 100,000 coins available in the base game and a Gamble Feature which allows you to gamble your winnings an unlimited number of times until you reach the gamble limit, this is a slot which, like Egyptian mythology itself, has stood the test of time.

Indeed, so popular is the Isis slot that Microgaming do offer a version of the game that is linked to the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot pool. That game is Mega Moolah Isis and it is essentially an updated version of this slot, which has the Jackpot Bonus Wheel game randomly triggered from within it, allowing you a chance to land the Mega Moolah fortune.

Pharaoh's Fortune

  • Reels - 3
  • Pay Lines - 1
  • Min Bet - 1.00
  • Max Bet - 3.00
  • Jackpot - 2,500 coins
  • Free Spins Bonus - No

Be careful when you are looking for the Pharaoh's Fortune slot from Microgaming, there is another slot game from another company (IGT) that shares the same name as this pleasant little three-reel retro-styled slot.

If you are one of the growing number of retro slot players that enjoy simple game-play as slot games used to be, then Pharaoh's fortune is the perfect game to load up for a few spins. It is a 3-reel game with just a single pay line right across the middle of the reels. Symbols can land either side of the pay line though, so be wary of that. You can bet from one to three coins per spin but if you bet three coins, the value of the top prize is increased by 2.5 times as opposed to being doubled, so it does make sense to wager three coins per spin if you can.

There are just a small number of symbols on the reels, a Scarab Beetle, one, two and three high Bar symbols, a Pyramid symbol and King Tutankhamun's death mask is the highest value symbol. Wins range from just 6 coins (assuming you play 3 coins) up to a maximum of 2,500 for three King Tut death mask symbols in a row.

This is a wonderful example of a simple retro-styled slot that is based on an Egyptian theme, but which is so easy and quick to play that it ticks all the right boxes for a retro slot fan.

Ramesses Riches

  • Reels - 5
  • Pay Lines - 20
  • Min Bet - 0.02
  • Max Bet - 100
  • Jackpot - 5,000 coins
  • Free Spins Bonus - Yes

The Ramesses riches slot was developed by NYX Gaming an affiliate of Microgaming and it is a decent five-reel game that boasts a good number of bonus features. The slot is set next to palm trees, which is a bit unusual given that these are not what you would normally associate with Egypt, but we'll let that pass as the slot does pack plenty of action into its base and bonus games.

There's 20 selectable lines in play and you can also increase the size of your coins to wager between 0.02 and 100.00. A sizeable 5,000-coin jackpot awaits you if you can land the top prize and the reels see symbols containing a mixture of lower value playing card values and higher value characters and artifacts from ancient Egypt.

King Tut is the in game wild and he is also the key to landing the jackpot with five across the reels landing you the top prize. He can also substitute for any of the other standard symbols to create winning lines and when that happens you receive a 2x multiplier on any standard win.

Three or more Ankh's appearing on the reels triggers free spins with 12, 16 or 20 Free Spins available to be won depending on the number landed. Each win during Free Spins comes with a 3x multiplier, however if you land a win with a Wild symbol during free spins, you get a 6x multiplier on those wins. You can also re-trigger Free Spins from within the bonus round, which is always a nice touch.

Throne of Egypt

  • Reels - 5
  • Pay Lines - 25
  • Min Bet - 0.01 (0.25 if you want to play maximum lines)
  • Max Bet - 125
  • Jackpot - 500,000
  • Free Spins Bonus - Yes

This eye-catching Egyptian slot once again features a number of familiar Egyptian characters including Anubis, the Scarab Beetle, Osiris and many others. It is a 25 selectable lines slot with 5 reels and one of the most eye-catching details of the slot is that the Wild symbol, the Throne of Egypt logo, is stacked on the reels, which allows you a better chance of one or multiple line wins when landed.

Another nice touch is the addition of another bonus feature called the Scarab Bonus. Here you need to land three of the Bonus symbols on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th reels to unlock the Bonus Chamber where you play the Scarab Bonus. Simply select from the Scarab Bonus until the special symbol is found which then moves you onto the next chamber. You then play two further Pick'em Bonus rounds, the Eagle Bonus and Princess Bonus to decide the size of your bonus win and the size of a multiplier attached to it.

The top base game prize is 10,000 coins for landing five of the Throne of Egypt Wilds across the reels and it is worth noting that these are stacked on the reels, so multiple line wins from achieving this are possible.

The Free Spins bonus is triggered by landing the Scatter symbol on the first and fifth reels on any spin. When you do you receive 15 Free Spins with a 2x multiplier and you can also re-trigger the bonus from within your Free Spins round.

All four of these slot games capture the essence of Ancient Egypt quite beautifully but also offer the gamer a chance to play a number of different slots based on a similar theme, each with a different challenge and set of bonuses.
