What slots would we like to see from Microgaming in the future?
With a catalogue of hit games it is fair to say that Microgaming have a pretty good track record when it comes to producing some outstanding slot games that stand the test of time.
Recently, with the company signing a number of deals with other software houses to produce exclusive content for the Microgaming brand, we have seen a number of new and exciting releases including the Village People Macho Moves, Fortunium, Ruby Casino Queen, Love Island, Zombie Hoard, Agent Jane Blonde Returns and Sherlock of London, and the third sequel to Tomb Raider; the Lara Croft Temples and Tombs.
What this means is that we are hopefully going to continue to see a steady stream of exciting new slot releases over the coming months and years from Microgaming, both as a result of their in-house development and as a result of their collaborations with other studios.
Now of course, the company will have a strategy for the games it wants to produce. It's no coincidence, for example, that the Love Island slot was released just when the TV show was at the height of its popularity in the United Kingdom.
But we're hoping that Microgaming executives may be open to some new ideas for slot games as we think we have a few corking ideas that would make for superb slot games and that would have mass appeal.
So here's our wish list for slots that we'd love to see from Microgaming, or its affiliate software development studios, in the near future.
Microgaming slots we'd love to play
- Premier League slot
Given its massive global popularity, I am amazed that there have not been many more football themed slots. When you consider that oriental-themed slots, Egyptian-themed slots and Norse-themed slots are ten a penny, you have relatively slim pickings when it comes to football-themed slots.
In truth, Microgaming's Football Star is one of the better, and higher paying, soccer themed slots available but I do feel there is real scope for a different slot. One that incorporates different bonus aspects and which has a quest feel, where you can play through a season on the slot, experiencing the ups and downs of the season.
You could also incorporate into the game player transfers, where you can trigger a bonus and select a player to buy for your team. The more expensive the player, the bigger the potential reward, but the more volatile the bonus would be (similar to the different options available in the Game of Thrones slot).
Given the massive popularity of the Premier League, I think this would be a smash hit slot and would have universal appeal across the globe. However, the one sticking point here could be the licensing issues which could be problematic. We'd like to think not as we believe a top-quality Premier League slot would be an absolute smash hit success.
- Glastonbury Festival slot
Music festivals are absolutely huge business nowadays and none is bigger or more newsworthy, than the happenings at Worthy Farm each year. Glastonbury has become a great deal more commercialised over the years compared to what it used to be, indeed many hardcore festival goers now feel it has lost its rebellious heart somewhat, but there is no doubt it remains hugely popular and I feel would be an outstanding slot in its own right.
The soundtrack could be a real mix of different bands and pop groups, and bonus features could include trying to pick the best bands to line up at Glasto for that year. Pick safer, more popular bands for less variable bonus features, but go for a very risky, outlandish pick and risk fewer spins, but higher multipliers to see if they could be a success.
Each of the five reels could be set up to replicate one of the different stages at the festival, with each having its own bonus feature that could randomly trigger in the base game.
Glastonbury is just one of many festivals over the course of the year for music fans to enjoy and I don't think we have had a music festival slot.
- Blade Runner 2049 slot
We have seen some pretty successful slot translations from film and TV shows in recent times. Game of Thrones is a huge hit and so are the likes of Jurassic World, Terminator 2 and perhaps even the Bullseye slot. However, if I had the choice to develop a slot game from a movie, I would love to see Blade Runner 2049 developed into a game.
The original film, Blade Runner, was a slow-burning success. Initially caned at the cinemas, it is now regarded as a modern classic, a stunning epic where Ridley Scott's intricate eye for detail produced one of the most diverse and vibrant worlds in cinema history.
Denis Villeneuve continued that in his sequel in 2017 and with it being based on more adult themes that say, films in the Star Wars trilogy, it would be more suited to the 18+ age range of slots. With sumptuous graphics, incredible cinematography (that won an Oscar) the presentation alone could be reason to play.
However, you could incorporate plot elements into the game. Can you help K retire the errant replicants? Will he locate the missing child before the Wallace corporation? You could even have a K v Luv slots battle akin to the battle between Bane and Batman in the Dark Knight Rises slot.
I feel given the subject matter and the visuals that would be possible with this game, Blade Runner 2049 would be a fantastic choice for a slot!
- Grand Theft Auto slot
With the massive popularity of console gaming nowadays, including the huge surge in interest in eSports and online gaming, computer games are becoming more and more important within society and we have already seen some fantastic slots developed from computer games. The Tomb Raider/Lara Croft series of games being one example and the Hitman slot being another.
One game though has drawn more criticism from moral guardians than any other, but despite this it has proven to be a smash hit success with players. Grand Theft Auto does deal with some pretty questionable subject matter, but it is an adult form of entertainment in the same way slots are, so I don't think this is something companies should shy away from.
The cartoon style of the game and its characters are now as recognisable to many gamers as film and music stars are to people of older generations and, of course, being digital in origin, they are relatively easy to formulate into a slot if the right licensing is agreed.
So whether you want to wander around the streets of Los Alamos, or explore San Andreas or Vice City, a Grand Theft Auto themed slot would have the potential to appeal to a massive number of younger adults in what is becoming a notoriously difficult socio-economic group to attract.
