Why Bridesmaids and Microgaming are a match made in heaven

Slots games designed for female players

Back in 2011, Paul Feig directed a film about a group of five friends who are going to be bridesmaids at the forthcoming wedding of another of their group. The film starred Kristen Wiig (who also co-wrote the screenplay), Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy and Ellie Kemper and was a somewhat unheralded release in the US back in May of that year.

However, the film proved to be a huge success and one of the best comedies of recent times. With a budget of $32.5 million, the film took $288.4 million at the box office and was one of the standout movie successes of the year.

It took a little while for the slot version of the smash hit fil to be released but Microgaming, after signing a deal to produce a number of film-based slot games, released the game a couple years later. So how well does the slot capture the mood and humour of the film? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

Do you like pink? Well, I hope so because the Bridesmaid's slot is a full on pink-induced bridal celebration. The backdrop is pink, the reels are a slightly different shade of pink, hell, even the Bridesmaid's dresses are all pink and the bride has a pink sash on her otherwise white dress. Even the decorations on the cupcakes are pink.

So Bridesmaid's isn't a macho game, why would it be given what it is based on, however while the game is very pink, it isn't the in-your-face, neon pink that some slots tend to prefer. The tones are rather more subtle and I think all the better for it.

The sound that accompanies the slot is somewhat simplistic initially, with just a generic backdrop sound from a casino, but when you trigger some of the wins and features of the slot then more interesting things begin to happen, including some video taken directly from the film which really does liven the game up and gives you a glimpse of the humour that made the film a smash hit.

One small issue here is that with a 5x4 reel layout and just 40 paying lines, this isn't a slot where you will win massive amounts too often, especially in the base game, but it is through the different features of the slot (of which there are many) that some of the bigger prizes, including the 105,000 coin jackpot, can be won.

What is on the reels?

When it comes to the symbols on the reels, there are three distinct types and the first of these are the lower value symbols. These are the four playing card symbols, clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades and each of these offers the same value of win depending on whether you land three, four or five across a pay line.

The higher value symbols are the character symbols and these are the five Bridesmaids, Becca, Rita, Megan, Helen, Annie and of course the Bride Lillian, who is the highest paying of these six symbols. Land five of the Lillian symbols on a winning line and you can win 12.5x your total bet.

Alongside these main symbols there are two others on the reel, the Wild symbol and the Scatter, both of which unlock some of the main features of the slot.

Wild features

The Bridesmaids logo is the in game Wild symbol and this is stacked on the reels in both the base games and when you trigger one of the Free Spins bonus games. In addition to being able to replace any of the lower and higher value symbols outlined above, you can also land the biggest base game line wins using the Wild symbol, with five Wilds across the reels paying out 15x your total bet.

The fact that the Wild is stacked means that you can often trigger multiple winning lines, especially when you land Wild stacks on the first couple of reels and this is the way you can land some of the higher value base game wins,

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol is the cupcake and this initially offers you a bonus win. These range from 1x your stake for landing two scatter symbols, up to 200 times your stake for landing five. Land three or more of the Scatters and you trigger the Wheel Bonus.

On the Wheel Bonus game you first get to select one of four cupcakes. This then reveals a prize which can be an increase in the value of the pink prizes or blue prizes on the reel (which are stated as a multiple of your total bet). You can also win a multiplier on all cash prizes, as well as adding two additional wheel pointers to the wheel before it spins (thus giving you three prizes instead of one).

Once you have picked your Cupcake Bonus it is then applied to the wheel before the wheel spins. 10 of the prizes on the wheel are cash prizes, one offers you the in game Jackpot and the four others offer you a chance to play one of the four Bonus Games that are part of the Bridesmaids slot.

The first of these is the Friendship Free Spins bonus which will see you handed 10 Free Spins and wins pay both left to right and right to left in this bonus. Furthermore, the Lillian symbol is stacked on the middle reel, with the Annie symbol stacked on the first two reels and the Helen symbol stacked on the fourth and fifth reels. You can uses these symbols in special combinations in this bonus round to land up to 1,750 times your stake and you can also re-trigger Free Spins in this bonus feature to give you up to 20 spins.

The other Free Spins bonus is Flying High Free Spins and you receive 10 Free Spins for this bonus which also features Rolling Reels and Growing Wilds, with the stack of Wilds growing by one symbol on each spin, giving you a better chance of landing the stacks across the reels. You can win uop to 1,200 times your stake on this feature.

The other two bonuses are game based and the first is Boutique Bonus. Here you match the Bridesmaids pictures to land cash prizes and two of these bridesmaids will include bonus multipliers increasing the value of your win. You can keep matching pairs until you find the Lillian pair, at which point the game will end. The maximum win on this bonus is 66x your stake.

Finally, the Magic Moments bonus sees you pick from 10 magic moments, nine of which will offer you a cash prize and just one will end the game. Pick enough of these magic moments in the bonus feature and you can win up to 350 times your stake.

Best feature of the Bridesmaids slot

Without doubt the best feature of the Bridesmaids slot is the Wheel Bonus and the attributed bonus features you can access from it. The sheer number of features means that this is a slot game that does have real longevity, as well as the chance of landing some very decent prizes.

Conclusion

The Bridesmaids slot may seem to be a somewhat female-oriented slot, but in truth, it is a fast, fun and enjoyable game to play that has enough features to keep any slots fan spinning the reels to see what they can win. I'd have liked to have seen a little more taken from the movie, and perhaps the Wilson Pickett song from the film's finale playing in the background but even without this, the Bridesmaids slot is one that you will keep coming back to play time and time again.
