Why overlooking Mega Moolah's second largest Major Jackpot is a mistake!

Everybody knows that the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot slot from Microgaming is a game that is all about that incredible top prize, the jackpot for which at the time of writing now stands at 7 million.

It is abundantly clear to anybody that such a huge jackpot prize, and the minimum prize it can ever be is 1 million, is always going to attract plenty of players, but many people tend to dismiss the fact that you can win some other sizeable prizes on the Mega Moolah slot a lot more frequently. That is down to the fact the game has four progressive jackpots to be won and while the Mini and Minor jackpots are not going to change your life, landing the second largest prize of the Major Jackpot could well do.

Furthermore, the Major Jackpot is also triggered a lot more often than the Mega Jackpot prize, which means that you have a far greater chance of winning this prize than the big one and in truth, it is not a bad consolation prize if you were hoping to land the massive jackpot.

How do the two big Mega Moolah jackpots compare in terms of number of payouts? Let's take a look at the month of March 2019 as an example.

Mega Moolah Mega and Major March 2019 Winners

In total, the Mega Moolah Mega and Major Jackpots were triggered 27 times throughout the month of March 2019, that is almost an average of once per day. We don't include the Minor and Mini jackpot winners on this list because the payouts are very small and these jackpots can be awarded many times each day, so it is almost impossible to track them all.

There were just two triggers of the Mega Moolah top jackpot prize, which is a higher than average number of winners for the Mega Moolah Mega Jackpot, as usually there has been on average less than one winner per month over the last few years. So hitting two in a month, while not exactly rare, is not exactly the norm either.

The first of the big wins came on the 5th March 2019 when one player landed a jackpot prize of $12.9 million in US Dollars and then 24-hours later, a second player playing in Canadian Dollars landed a CA$3.3 million jackpot prize.

Across both currencies that meant that Mega Moolah paid out around 16.2 million in two currencies in March alone on just two winning spins. However, that means that the other 25 big winners from the month all landed their prize either from the Major Jackpot or the Mega Moolah base game itself.

Unfortunately, we don't know exactly the percentage of each of these wins but given how frequently the Jackpot Bonus Game triggers in the Mega Moolah slot and the number of players who play the game across the month, I think it is safe to assume that the majority, if not all, of these other 25 big winners are likely to have come from players winning the Major Jackpot.

Now let's have a look at these sizeable Major Jackpot March 2019 wins in more detail.

  • 1st March - €10,073
  • 1st March - €10,012
  • 2nd March - €24,590
  • 4th March - $57,506
  • 8th March - CA$35,317
  • 9th March - €46,920
  • 10th March - CA$19,620
  • 10th March - $10,009
  • 12th March - CA$23,600
  • 13th March - CA$30,565
  • 14th March - CA$25,842
  • 15th March - $29,059
  • 16th March - CA$23,335
  • 18th March - €31,807
  • 19th March - CA$10,006
  • 22nd March - CA$31,666
  • 22nd March - CA$20,734
  • 22nd March - CA$55,318
  • 23rd March - CA$21,777
  • 24th March - CA$14,963
  • 25th March - €21,741
  • 27th March - €75,273
  • 28th March - €46,739
  • 30th March - £17,004
  • 31st March - €22,772

Now how do we know that the majority of these prizes were on the Major Jackpot rather than in the Mega Moolah base game? Well what we know about progressive jackpots is that the shorter the time in between wins, the less they tend to grow in size and also the opposite of this is true, the longer between wins, the more the jackpots tend to increase in value.

If you look at the pattern of wins throughout the month, you find this pattern is very much shown. Wins that are a few days apart tend to be bigger, while those that occur within a day of each other, or even wins on the same day, tend to be smaller. Indeed there are even some wins around the seed amount for the Mega Moolah Major prize of 10,000.

It is also worth remembering that the rules about exchanging the value of the prize from the base currency of the Mega Moolah slot, the British Pound, into the winning currency shown above also applies. Which is why a jackpot is won in a currency that doesn't use up as much of the British Pound balance (such as the Canadian dollar for example), more money is left in the progressive fund, so the next jackpot win would tend to be higher than you would had the winner landed their prize using the Euro or British Pounds.

If we look at the total numerical value of the wins, and we assume that these wins are all Major Jackpot wins, then this means that in addition to the big money paid out on the two Mega Jackpot winners of 16.253 million, the game paid out an additional 716,248 across the 25 other wins in the game.

That means in March 2019, the average win on the Mega Moolah jackpot trigger was just under 28,650 in your chosen currency. That is a significant amount of money and would certainly be a massive boost to well over 99% of slot players who try their luck on games like Mega Moolah every week.

Mega Moolah Major Wins in a Year

Although this is a very rough method of calculation, if we say March is a typical month for Mega Moolah Major Jackpot payouts, and we extrapolate that information out over a typical calendar year then you start to realise just how lucrative the Mega Moolah Major Jackpot can be for players.

  • Average Number of Calendar Triggers of the Mega Moolah Major Jackpot

Across a year, using March 2019 as the base figure, this means you would trigger the Mega Moolah Major Jackpot 300 times in a calendar year. That means that the likelihood of the Major Jackpot being triggered on any given day in a calendar year us 82%. That compares massively favourably with the chances of landing a Mega Moolah Mega Jackpot which, if we say on average is won once a month, only has a 3.8% chance of being won on any given day in the year.

With an average win amount of 28,650, this would mean that throughout the year, the Mega Moolah Major Jackpot prize alone would pay out 8,595,000 in prize money across the different currencies you can play the game.

Of course, these figures are never going to be exact, just like the Mega Jackpot prize, the Mega Moolah Major Jackpot can be won at any time, by any player and there can be clusters of wins close together, or days between triggers. So that monthly average can vary quite considerably over an extended period of time.

However, what it does show you is that if you are going to win big on the Mega Moolah slot, then you are far more likely to do so winning the Major Jackpot prize than the Mega and that the value of these Major prizes, can still be massive for those lucky enough to hit that particular Mega Moolah jackpot.
