You could land a pot of gold in the Lucky Leprechaun slot!
Irish themed slots are very popular as they are often linked with luck, good fortune and of course, the reputation the Irish have for being somewhat jolly, friendly and cheery folk makes them a popular topic for slot games.
Microgaming's Lucky Leprechaun slot is a game that has been around a while now but which still enjoys a great deal of popularity with players. It is a 5-reel slot game with 20 fixed pay lines in play on each spin, bets start at just 0.20 per spin, although higher rollers can ramp up the action considerably up to 100.00 per spin.
The base game top prize is 50x your bet, but you can win considerably more than that in the bonus games in the slot and it is these bonus features that really give the game an added dimension and are what keep players coming back for more.
So has the Lucky Leprechaun slot stood the test of time well, or has its pot of gold started to spoil over the years? We decided to take a closer look to find out.

Presentation
The presentation of this slot is somewhat stereotypical. Emerald green dominates the colour scheme with gold and more cheery colours coming from the symbols. The backdrop is a little basic, it's a very simple landscape and the Irish-themed music is somewhat predictable but does fit the theme and styling of the game nicely.
Things do pick up a bit more when you start to trigger the main bonus features of the slot and move away from the base game and there are some nice cut scenes and animations here which liven the game-play up a little.
What is on the reels?
The lowest value symbols on the reels are the playing card symbols. These range from the 10 through to the Ace and these offer generally lower value wins, although they are the most common type of win you land in the game.
Higher value symbols are the pipe, pints of Guinness, the fiddle and the Leprechaun and they offer a wide range of wins ranging from ¾ of your total bet, to 4x your bet.
The other symbols on the reels, including the Wild, Scatter and Bonus symbols are all linked in with the main features of the slot as we will explore below.
Wild features
The Lucky Leprechaun logo is the Wild symbol and it can appear on all of the five reels on the slot. It serves a number of purposes, firstly, it is stacked on the reels in both the base game and during Free Spins, which means that you can turn entire reels Wild, and of course the more of these that you can land on a spin, then the better the chances are of you landing a big value win.
In addition to that, the Wild also substitutes for any of the standard symbols outlined above to help create additional wins, although it does not substitute for the Scatter or Bonus symbols.
Lastly, if you can land five of the Wild symbols across the reels, you will win the biggest single line pay in the game of 50x your total stake (which at the maximum bet of 100.00 per spin, is a 5,000 prize).
Free Spins features
The Free Spins bonus is triggered in a slightly unusual way compared to other games. In Lucky Leprechaun there is just one key symbol to land on the fifth reel, the four leafed clover. If you manage to land that symbol anywhere on the fifth reel then you will trigger the Free Spins bonus game.
In this bonus you receive an initial five Free Spins and each win you land during the bonus round comes with a 2x multiplier. During Free Spins small gold or green coloured clovers can be attached to the lower value symbols on the reels and if you land them, they perform a bonus task.
Each green clover you land adds one spin to your total, while any gold clovers landed increases the value of your multiplier by one, up to a maximum of 5x the standard win.
There is another bonus feature in the game and that is the Trail O' Fortune bonus which occurs when you land three, four or five of the Bonus pots of gold symbol anywhere across the reels. When you do, you will land four, five or six bonus spins.
This is a game where you have to spin to move your Leprechaun along the trail. The further you can progress along the trail with each spin, the more cash you can win, up to the maximum prize of 1,000x your stake. You can also unlock an emerald jewel on your journey and if you do, you will receive an additional bonus spin to help try and increase the value of your win.
Best feature of the Lucky Leprechaun slot
There's lots to like on the Lucky Leprechaun slot. The Stacked Wild really does help you a lot in the base game and Free Spins and I like the Trail O'Fortune bonus too, although the wins you can land on that bonus do tend to fluctuate a great deal. However for me, the Free Spins bonus is the best aspect of the slot and if you can land those gold and green clover leaves in the game to increase your multiplier and the number of spins, then you can land some very sizeable wins in Free Spins to really boost your overall win.
Conclusion
Don't be fooled by the rather twee and jaunty nature of the Lucky Leprechaun slot. This is a very enjoyable and somewhat engaging slot game that will test your patience, luck and bankroll, but which also offers you some fabulous gaming. It's a mid-level variance slot game that offers a good mix of wins and some fantastic bonus features which can prove to be very rewarding. It is easy to see why Lucky Leprechaun remains a firm favourite with many Microgaming customers.
Remember too that Microgaming have also released a scratchcard version of this slot game which is now available to play at Microgaming casinos. The Lucky Leprechaun Scratchcard offers a chance to win up to 750x your bet, with bets ranging from just a 0.25 per game to 50.00 per game, depending on how much you want to wager.
