You will have a whale of a time on the new Moby Dick slot

Rabcat have produced some excellent games in a fruitful partnership with Microgaming over recent months and their output has generally been very high quality. The good news for fans of their slots is that their newest addition to the line-up is of equally top quality as its predecessors.

The game is called Moby Dick and as you would expect, it is based on the Herman Melville classic of literature of the same name. The story tells the tale of Captain Ahab's obsession with gaining revenge on an albino white Whale, Moby Dick. Prior to the story beginning, Ahab had lost his leg in a previous encounter with the whale and his attempts at revenge are told through the eyes of a member of his crew, Ishmael.

The story is one of the classics of American literature, despite being an initial flop for the author. However, after Melville's death, the book's popularity surged with many top novelists of the time claiming it as an inspiration to them. Fittingly, in the 21st century, it is now the inspiration behind what is a spectacular looking slot game.

Let's take a look at whether this is a whale of a blockbuster, or whether it is going to leave players blubbering.

Rabcat's games have a well-deserved reputation for being beautifully presented and the Moby Dick slot is no exception. In fact, this may well be the best presented of all Rabcat's games. The setting is of course a wild sea, with white-crested waves rising out of the water and lapping at the side of Captain Ahab's vessel.

The background is dynamic with the waves in constant motion and every so often you will see the hump of the white whale breach the water. Ahab himself will use his telescope to scan the seas for signs of his nemesis and the sound effects are perfectly suited to the action on screen, although the music that plays as the slot starts did remind me more of Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino, than a classic tale from American literature.

The reels are centralised on the screen with all the key controls such as the stake selector at the foot of the reels. A total of 25 pay lines are in play on each spin and you can wager from as little a $0.25 to get the reels spinning.

What is on the reels?

On the reels are the usual mix of lower and higher value symbols, although all the symbols are stylised to fit in with the story. That even includes the playing card symbols which are the lower value symbols in the game. These are stylised in a number of different ways, from wood through to gold and there are five of these symbols, from 10 through to the ace. The pay outs range from very small amounts (less than a tenth of your total bet) up to a maximum of 100 times your line stake.

Alongside these symbols here are four others, a tankard, an anchor, Captain Ahab and Moby Dick which offers the highest pay out of 5,000 times your line stake for five on a pay line.

The slot also comes with a Win Freezing feature which sees a free re-spin awarded whenever you land a winning pay line. Land another symbol to help increase the value of your initial win and you will win another re-spin and you can grow your initial win considerably, sometimes across multiple pay lines, by means of this feature.

Wild features

The Ships Wheel is the in-game Wild and this can substitute for any of the higher or lower value symbols outlined above to help create additional pay lines on each spin. However, if you manage to land five of these Wild symbols on a single pay line then you will also win the top prize of 5,000 times your single line stake.

However, Wild wins only pay out when five are on a pay line, any fewer amount than this and there are no pay outs.

Free Spins features

The gaping mouth of Moby Dick is the Scatter symbol in the game and when you land four, five, six or seven of these symbols across the reels, then you will receive 10, 12, 15 or 20 free spins respectively.

During free spins, three Wild symbols can appear on the middle reel which can help you land multiple wins on different pay lines. You can also re-trigger the free spins bonus from within the free games if you are fortunate enough to.

Best feature of the Moby Dick slot

Although the Free Spins aspect of the Moby Dick is a good fun game, it can be somewhat difficult to trigger at times, so for me and in terms of value for money and playability, I feel that the Win Freezing feature is the best aspect of the slot game. This can lead you to some very sizeable wins in the base game and can help boost your bankroll considerably, especially if you are lucky enough to land a sizeable number of the higher value symbols, or Wild symbols, across the reels on a particular spin.

The Moby Dick slot is another feast for the eyes and ears from Rabcat. It is immaculately presented and looks and sounds fantastic, especially on high quality screens. However, the slot is more than just a good-looker. The game-play is engaging and fun and the Win Freezing feature is certainly one that gives the slot masses of appeal as you essentially get at least one free re-spin, with a chance to increase the size of your initial win, every time you land a winning spin on any symbol.

The Free Spins bonus round is good fun and when you do trigger it, with the Wilds stacked on the third reel, some big wins are possible. This is a fun, enjoyable slot that you should definitely try out!
