A review of the Magic of Sahara slot by All41 Studios for Microgaming

Apparently, being in the desert at night and seeing the vast expanse of sand set below a black sky, is one of the most incredible sights in the world.

So perhaps the magic of the Sahara may come alive in the Magic of Sahara slot, the brand new release from by All41 Studios for Microgaming. This is All41 Studios' second game release following the lower variance slot Le Kaffee Bar released earlier this year.

This is a slot that seems to take a simpler approach with just 9 lines across the reels and very simple Wild and Free Spins bonuses. However, don't be fooled into thinking Microgaming have just dusted off the template to one of their old games and rehashed it. This is a very thoughtful slot which has some excellent features.

So how does the Magic of Sahara slot play out? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

The presentation of the Magic of Sahara slot is very nicely done indeed. The background of the slot is beautiful to look at and depicts a town in the hazy distance, nestling on the edge of the eponymous desert underneath a hazy purple, orange coloured sky. The quality of the graphics is excellent and they provide a neat backdrop to the semi-transparent reels and as you spin, the picture changes from day to night and back again, offering an ever-changing vista.

The reels are also neatly done and the symbols on them are also brought to life nicely. Add to this a soundtrack which is a perfect choice for a slot based on an Africa/desert theme and you have a slot that is a real feast on the eyes and ears.

It is clear that Microgaming have upped their game considerably when it comes to presentation in recent times and this slot is a fine example of exactly how they have done that. It looks sumptuous, especially on higher quality screens.

What is on the reels?

On the reels are a number of different symbols and they start with the basic playing card symbols, from the 9 through to the Ace. These are the lowest value symbols on the reels however, unlike some games, you are guaranteed to win more than you bet even if you just land three of the symbols on a pay line with the lowest pay out being slightly more than your total bet.

There are also three higher value standard symbols on the reels, the camel is the lowest of the trio, followed by the African lady and lastly the African man. These symbols can offer some massive prizes if landed with five symbols across the reels.

There are a number of other symbols on the reels, a Wild symbol, a Scatter and an additional Magic Token, the latter two of which are linked to the main bonus feature of the slot as we will explore below.

Wild features

The Magic Of Sahara logo is the Wild symbol in the game and it serves a number of purposes and is used in a number of ways on the slot. In the base game, the Wild is also the highest paying symbol, offering sizeable wins for three, four and particularly five of them across the reels.

The Wild also serves as a replacement symbol for the standard symbols in the base game and to help you land them, they are super-stacked on the third and fourth reels of the slot.

The Wilds are used in a similar way in Free Spins but with a slight twist, as we will explore below.

Free Spins features

The Free Spins bonus game can be triggered in two different ways on the Magic of Sahara slot. First off, you can trigger it in the standard way by landing three or more of the Scatter symbols on the reels in the base game.

Landing Scatters also lands you a win, with wins ranging from the size of your bet for two Scatter symbols up to a massive 100x your bet for landing all five across the reels.

You can also trigger the Free Spins bonus by collecting the Magic Free Spins tokens symbol in the base game. This is the bearded old man holding what looks like a charm. Each time this symbol lands in the base game, you are given one additional charm on the meter. Collect 25 of these and you trigger Free Spins.

Additionally, when you are awarded the charm onto the meter, the bearded man symbol will change into one of the lower value playing card symbols on the reels and this can trigger an additional win on your spin.

The number of Free Spins you receive is the amount of charms you have collected. So, if you collect 25 to trigger free spins that way, you get 25 Free Spins. Hit three or more Scatters and however many Charms you have collected up to that point is the number of free spins you receive. However, when you enter the bonus, you will automatically get an additional five Free Spins added to that total (making a maximum of 30 Free Spins).

Every win in the Free Spins bonus round is subject to a 2x multiplier and during the bonus feature the Wilds on every reel are super-stacked, not just those on the third and fourth reel as in the base game.

Best feature of the Magic of Sahara slot

There's not an abundance of features in the Magic of Sahara slot, but what ones there are do really give the slot a lift. The fact you have stacked Wilds on the third and fourth reel does help in the base game and the Free Spins bonus offers some great value wins. It is a medium volatility slot however as there are just nine winning lines, which means hitting wins is by no means easy, even during Free Spins with those stacked Wilds. However the great value on offer for each of the wins in the game means that you do feel like you are suitably rewarded when you land a win.

Conclusion

The Magic of Sahara is a very good slot game. It is perhaps a little simplistic compared to other slots in terms of the features it has and the bonuses on offer, but I love the fact that the minimum win on the slot is more than you bet. To me, that is what all slots should aspire to, even if it means they are more volatile. In terms of a standard slot game, Magic of Sahara is one of the better ones that Microgaming have released in recent times and it is one that you should definitely have on your list to play.
