With the new Aladdin film hitting cinemas in 2019, starring Will Smith as the genie, the story is back in the public eye and Fortune Factory Studios new slot Aliya's Wishes takes a slightly different look at the story, introducing female Aliya as the genie in the game.

It is a Rolling Reels game with a Multiplier trail and 20 pay lines across the 5x3 reels and also features a Win Booster option which you can select or deselect on any spin.

Presentation

Set against the backdrop of a Persian town, if you have played any type of Aladdin or Genie themed slot then the look of the Aliya's Wishes slot will be very familiar. The backdrop is nicely done with some moving elements in the sky like the tree leaves blowing in the wind and clouds moving across the screen. Add to that running water and a nice atmospheric song and sound effects playing as you spin and the look and feel of the slot is very well done indeed.

You can tell it is based on the Aladdin and the Magic Lamp story, only this time the genie is female, other than that the characters are pretty much the same as you would expect.

One final pointer, as this is a Rolling Reels slot, there are no reels as such, but instead five columns that the symbols drop down onto. Symbols can also be stacked on the reels, which can help lead to multiple pay line wins.

What is on the reels?

When it comes to what symbols are on the reels, there are ten standard symbols, five of which are the lower value symbols. These are the different artefacts from the story and include large tea urns, a blue book, a bag of green jewels, a curved dagger and some red powder, liquid and parchment. Wins on these symbols range from just 1/5 of your total bet up to 2.4x your bet.

The five higher value symbols are all the characters from the story and they are most easily identified by colour. The purple man, the blue man (who looks like the bandit from the story), the green prince, the gold princess and lastly, the genie herself is the highest paying base game symbol. Wins on these symbols range from 0.4x your bet up to 15x your bet for five genies across one of the 20 pay lines.

Although the value of the wins is low, you can win across multiple pay lines to increase the value of wins as symbols are stacked and furthermore, the Rolling Reels and Multiplier Trail feature offers the opportunity to increase the value of every win as we will explore in the bonus sections below.

Wild features

The Treasure Chest symbol is the in game Wild and this can appear across all five reels. Like the standard symbols, it can also appear stacked up to three high on a reel. The Wild pays the same top value prizes for three, four and five symbols on a pay line as the Genie slot, but it can also be used to replace other standard symbols to help create wins, especially when multiple Wilds land on the reels.

Stacks of Wilds can be higher than three symbols, so if a Rolling Reels win triggers and Wilds disappear from the reels as part of a win, additional Wilds may drop down from above to replace them, depending on how many were in the stack. Unfortunately, the Wilds do not offer a multiplier on any win.

Free Spins features

The Magic Lamp is the Scatter symbol in the game, and this can appear across all five reels. Landing three, four or five of these symbols will see you land 10, 15 or 20 Free Spins respectively, which will begin after any Rolling Reels wins are completed on the triggering spin. Free Spins can be re-triggered from within the bonus game by landing three or more Scatters once again during the bonus round.

One thing to note is that during Free Spins, the size of the Multiplier Trail increases from the standard amount to a greater amount. Exactly what that is depends on whether you have the Win Booster button selected in the game.

The Win Booster is an option you can select or deselect at any time. All it does is increase the value of the multipliers on the Multiplier Trail in the base game and the Free Spins bonus round.

In a standard game, the Multiplier Trail offers 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x wins in the base game, and 2x, 5x, 8x and 21x the standard wins in Free Spins.

However, with the Win Booster activated, the standard wins are 2x, 5x, 8x and 21x, while the Free Spins wins are 5x, 12x, 21x and 50x.

One thing to note though is that with the Win Booster button selected the cost of your spin will double from your standard bet size. So if you were playing the base game at 1.00 per spin in the standard mode, with the Win Booster active, that would increase to 2.00 per spin.

Best feature of the Aliya's Wishes slot

There is no doubt that while the Wild is a key asset for the player in the base game, the main thrust of this slot is the Free Spins bonus round and the Multiplier Trail. Indeed, the Multiplier Trail is the key to the bigger value wins on this slot regardless of whether you trigger Free Spins or not. The Win Booster can make it more rewarding, but does come at a cost of 2x your standard bet and I am not sure for the majority of players that is a price worth paying. High Rollers that love a volatile slot though will love this option.

Conclusion

Aliya's Wishes is a higher variance game that does have teeth. The Win Booster does make it a little more player friendly in the longer run, but in the shorter term and especially for those with smaller bankrolls, it can be prohibitively expensive to use. Having just the 20 pay lines on a Rolling Reels slot is unusual and this combined with low value 3 and 4 symbol wins does make this a hard slot to land any regular decent value wins on. However, the game is beautifully presented and its bonuses are appealing, although I feel it will likely appeal more to the mid to higher stakes player, rather than the low to micro stakes slots fan.
