Arthur's Gold slot comes with Expanding Wilds in Free Spins

Set against the backdrop of some vast chamber containing thousands of gold coins, locked away somewhere one can only assume in the castle of Camelot, Arthur's Gold is an interesting new slot from one of the newer partners for Microgaming, Gold Coin Studios.

On the face of it, it is nothing too dramatic from the norm. We have a 5x3 reel slot game that has 20 pay lines in play and a relatively standard bet range from 0.20 to 50.00 and it plays as a more middle of the road variance slot. The base game jackpot is 500x but there is a chance to win more using a variety of other bonuses and features that can be unlocked in the game.

All so far so good them for the Arthur's Gold slot, but what else is there to this game? We decided to strap on some armour, leap aboard our noble steed and take our chances to see if we can draw the sword from the stone and find out more about what the Arthurs Gold slot has to offer its players.

Here is what the result of that mighty quest discovered.

Presentation

The presentation of the Arthur's Gold slot is very simple, it is a rather large chamber locked away in a castle that contains a whoe heap of gold coins, what we can assume is the titular Arthur's Gold in the title. Overlaid across this Khashoggi-like backdrop are the five reels with the main controls of the slot on the right hand side and at the foot of the reels.

Accompanying this is a rather grandiose soundtrack that would not sound out of place on the latest Hollywood Blockbuster and pleasingly, it is a full soundtrack, do you do not have the same 2 second piece of music looped over and over. The reels have been animated with some nice animations when you land a win and the graphics, while a little old fashioned, do fit in nicely with the theme. I also like the fact that the human characters in the game are all named which makes it easier to match them up.

Overall, this is a relatively simple looking slot, but one that shows that you can still produce a simple but effective slot game.

Where can you play the Arthur's Gold slot?

You can play the Arthur's Gold slot at any of the Mega Moolah casinos on the Where to Play page, Bonus page, Rewards page or Country page.

What is on the reels?

In terms of the symbols on the reels there are two distinct types of symbols. The first of these are the low symbols and these are the playing card low symbols from the Jack through to the Ace. They offer wins from ¼ of your bet up to 2x your bet for five aces across the reel. They also fit in nicely with the court theme of the slot.

The other symbols on the reels are all characters from Arthurian legend and these are the high symbols. Each character has two high symbols, a single one, and a double one, which counts as two symbols on the reel.

This means that you can win on lines across the reels ranging from three characters up to 10 characters (if you land five of the double high symbols across the reel). The High Symbol characters are Viviane, Lancelot, Guinevere, Merlin and King Arthur himself who is the highest paying of the high symbols paying up to 125x your bet for 10 across the reels.

Alongside these symbols there is also a Wild symbol on the reels and also a Scatter and these unlock the main features of the slot below.

Wild features

The main Wild symbol in the base game appears on all reels and can substitute for any symbol on the reels apart from the Scatter. In addition to acting as a substitute, the Wild can also trigger its own wins if landed across the reels. The Wild does not have a 'double' symbol so you can only land between 2 and 5 on a pay line to land a win, but the wins range from 2.25x your bet up to 500x your bet if you can land five Wilds across a pay line.

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol in the Arthur's Gold slot is the treasure chest and you need to land three or more of these across the reels in order to trigger the Free Spins bonus round. In addition, you will win a cash prize of 2x, 5x or 10x your bet, depending on whether you trigger three, four or five of the Scatters on the spin.

Regardless of how many Scatters you land, you will receive 10 Free Spins and during Free Spins the Wild symbol on the reel changes slightly. If you land one of these Special Wilds on the middle three reels, then the Wild Expands to cover the entire reel and triggers a respin of the other reels. You can then land other Special Wilds on that respin to trigger another free respin and perhaps trigger additional wins on the reels. Up to three consecutive Respins are possible this way.

There is one other bonus feature to note and that is the Double Up feature which can be used after any win in the base game or Free Spins bonus round that is below 5,000 coins in value. When you have won, click on the Double Up button to take the gamble on offer.

All you need to do is predict the outcome of a coin toss. Guess correctly and you double your winnings. Guess incorrectly and you lose your winnings. There is a cap set at 10,000 coins for any Double Up prize and you cannot use this feature if you are using the Autoplay option.

Best feature of the Arthur's Gold slot

There is a lot to like about the Arthur's Gold slot. It has some nice simple graphics, easy to follow game play and some interesting features. The Expanding Wilds feature in Free Spins is interesting, as this is a feature on other slots in the base game, but those games do not have a Free Spins bonus, so it is nice to see it used differently. The presentation of the slot is slick and I feel it is a very solid medium variance offering where the Free Spins bonus is the best part of the slot, but where the whole game is actually rather neatly done.

Conclusion

This is an impressive start to life as a partner with Microgaming for Gold Coin Studios. Sure the game is a little dated looking in places, I feel the characters could have been made to look at bit more exciting, but where the game really counts in terms of game play and excitement, it ticks all the right boxes. One word of caution is to use the Double Up feature wisely as it can prove costly trying to double up winnings and losing them, but other than that, this is a fun and enjoyable mid-variance slot to play.
