Does the new Robin of Sherwood slot from Rabcat/Microgaming hit the mark?

Do you remember the 1980s TV series Robin of Sherwood which starred Michael Praed and then Jason Connery in the titular role (not to mention a young Ray Winston as Will Scarlett)? The theme tune was sung by Irish band Clannad and the show was a hit in the 80s and can be found on the repeat channels on satellite TV nowadays.

I only mention this because when I saw the title of this new Microgaming and Rabcat release, I wondered is this was a new licensed game based on the old TV classic. The answer to that is no it isn't, but what Rabcat have done is develop a fabulous, cartoon style representation of the story as the central theme of their slot and it works well.

Let's take a look now at whether Robin of Sherwood is another string to the Rabcat bow, or whether this is a slot where the arrow didn't quite hit the mark.

The presentation of the Robin of Sherwood slot is outstanding and Rabcat deserve great credit for developing a slot that looks and sounds so spectacular. There's a nice mix of sounds in the game, form the gentle soundtrack you get before you spin the reels, to the fanfares and noisier effects you get when you trigger bigger value wins. The graphics have been beautifully realised and all members of Robin Hood's band of Merry Men (and women) are easy to recognise.

The animations on the bonus features such as Free Spins and when you trigger the Wild Turning feature are also very nicely done and the whole slot looks and feels like a great deal of care has been taken with its production. Well done Rabcat on producing another beautiful looking slot.

What is on the reels?

There are a number of different symbols on the 243 Ways to Win reels. They start at the lower end of the scale with the four playing card symbols, the jack, queen, king and ace, which offer relatively small value wins. The higher value symbols on the reels are all the different members of Robin Hood's merry band and they include Friar Tuck, Little John, Maid Marion and Robin Hood himself, as well as their main nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham. These offer considerably higher amounts to be won.

One thing to watch out for in the base game is the Wild Turning feature, which can trigger at random during any base game spin. When this occurs one or more reels can be chosen by Robin Hood appearing and firing arrows at the reels. When they land, they will turn any of the lower value Ace, King, Queen or Jack symbols Wild and this can in turn trigger fresh wins on that spin.

Wild features

In addition to the Wild Turning feature outlined above, there is also a Wild symbol on the reels which is the three arrows symbol. Land five of these across the reels on a pay line and you will trigger the maximum base game payout.

When landed on the reels, the Wild will substitute for any of the lower or higher value symbols outlined above and can lead to landing one or more wins across the reels. The more Wilds you land on a spin, the more chance you have of landing better value or an increased number of wins on that spin. Sadly there is no multiplier attached to any of the Wild wins, which is a little disappointing and perhaps something I would have liked to have had available when playing, especially with the low value wins you tend to get in the base game.

Free Spins features

The Free Spins bonus game is triggered by landing three or more of the Free Spin Scatter Symbol (which is the archery target) across the reels. You can also land more than one of the Scatters on a single reel, which does seem to give you a better chance of triggering the Free Spins bonus round.

When you land this, you will receive 10 Free Spins and on each second spin of your Free Spins game, the Royal Clearing Feature will activate.

What this does is that on your 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th spin, Robin Hood will take aim with his arrow and attempt to take out the three Royal targets set up underneath where the Sheriff of Nottingham sits. These are the Queen, King and Ace symbols. If Robin hits these symbols, then they are removed from the reels and thus, your chances of landing a better value win are increased. The more quickly Robin can hit the three targets, reducing the amount of symbols on the reels on your Free Spins, the better chance you have of landing a bigger value win.

What is pleasing about the Free Spins feature is that it was not particularly difficult to hit and although the payouts you get from the bonus can vary considerably, it is pleasing to have a bonus feature that is relatively easy to trigger compared to some others.

Best feature of the Robin of Sherwood slot

There is a lot to like with the Robin of Sherwood slot. The presentation is hugely impressive and Rabcat ( deserve real credit for the high-quality production on this slot. The base game benefits from the randomly triggered bonus feature, although I feel it would have been nicer had some of the Wild wins had multipliers as many base game wins are very small.

For me though, the Free Spins bonus is the best feature of the slot. The fact that it is relatively easy to trigger and that it offers a good mix of returns, including some fabulous big money wins if you are lucky to get the bonus when it is paying out, makes it great fun to play, especially with the Royal Clearing feature in action on every second spin.

What does Microgaming and Rabcat say about the Robin of Sherwood slot?

Microgaming Games Publisher, David Reynolds, had this to say "players can expect a highly entertaining adventure based on the legend of the heroic outlaw this July as Microgaming releases Robin of Sherwood Online Slot. This latest Rabcat creation has cleverly weaved exciting game features into one of the most legendary tales of old, incorporating outstanding visuals and rich animations to bring it into modern times. With a Gamble Game feature, Wild Turning in base game and Royal Clearing in free spins, this exclusive slot gives a variety of configurations to increase the probability of a big win with every spin."

And the founder of Rabcat, Thomas Schleischitz, had this to say "our striking depiction of the legendary Robin of Sherwood delivers a cutting-edge gaming experience packed with thrilling features, flawless character animations, and a volley of winning opportunities. We are delighted to supply Microgaming with exclusive gaming content that hits the mark with players and operators alike."

Robin of Sherwood is one of the best new Microgaming slots to come out in 2018. Designed in conjunction with Rabcat, this is a slot which packs a great amount of bonus features, fun and enjoyable game play into every spin. The game itself is fun to play and the animations and graphics and excellent sound make it a feast for the eyes and ears too. The bonus features are generally rewarding, but the one gripe is the lower value wins in the base game, which happen frequently but which only offer you a very small return compared to the size of your bet. Despite that though, Robin of Sherwood is one slot you should definitely aim to play.

Where to play the Robin of Sherwood slot?

You can play this slot at any of the casinos on the Where to Play page, where admittedly the offers are geared towards Mega Moolah for obvious reasons, but there's also an alternative that we recommend called Spartan Slots - claim 25 Free Spins without deposit plus 200% Bonus.
