Enjoy the Luck of the Irish with Microgaming’s new Rainbrew slot
Irish slots are very popular and one of the most common themes for these slots is good fortune, these often come in the form of the traditional being that is inherent in Irish culture, the Leprechaun and you will find these rather cheeky creatures are the inspiration for Microgaming's newest slot game, Rainbrew.
Developed by Just for the Win for Microgaming, the company that brought you Deco Diamonds and Goldwyn's Fairies, this new slot has a somewhat unusual reel design, with the standard 5x3 reel set supplemented by two 'Sidewinder' reels at the top and bottom of the reels, which can add additional Wild symbols to a spin when triggered, and increase the number of potential winning lines from the standard 243 up to 1125.
It all sounds rather complicated, but the good thing is, as with any top slot, as soon as you start to play, you quickly understand how the top and bottom Sidewinder reels fit in with the rest of the game and once you grasp that, then the rest of the slot is plain sailing.
So how does it shape up in terms of quality? Let's take a closer look.

The presentation on the Rainbrew slot is what I would term as stereotypically Irish. The music is Irish folk music, the kind you would hear playing at a Ceilidh bar, and while it isn't the most original it is very fitting in terms of the theme of the slot and I have to say, the music is of a very high quality and is rather pleasing on the ear.
The visuals on the slot are also impressive. The unusual way the reels are set up with the five standard reels in the middle of the screen, plus the two horizontal 'Sidewinder' reels at the top and bottom of them is nicely done. The animations are crisp, the colours vivid and the symbols on the reels are all nicely brought to life. All in all Rainbrew may not be the most original Irish slot you will ever see but what it does, it does very well indeed in terms of the presentation.
What is on the reels?
On the reels are a number of different Irish themed symbols and these start with the lower value symbols, which are all the different shapes and patterns. Wins are shown as a multiplication of your total bet, with wins ranging from 0.4x your bet up to 2x your bet for the lower value symbols, of which there are five.
There are also five of the higher value symbols and these are all things to do with Leprechaun's magic and similar. Wins on the higher value symbols range from 0.8x your stake up to 8x your bet, which means that the wins in the base game are not exactly huge. However, one thing you need to remember is that on 243-ways slots, the bigger wins come when you trigger multiple line wins across multiple lines and this does happen frequently.
There are a number of other symbols on the reels, including three different Wild symbols, plus the Scatter and as these are all linked to the key features of the slot, we'll explore these in more detail below.
The Rainbrew slot is unusual as it does not have just one Wild in the game, but instead has three. The Regular Wild is the multicoloured symbol and this can appear anywhere on the standard reels and as you would expect, they substitute for any of the standard symbols to create winning lines.
There are two other Wilds in the game though and these are the blue coloured Top Wild and the green coloured Bottom Wild and it is these Wilds that are directly linked to one of the key features in the game, the Sidewinder feature.
The blue Top Wild can only appear on the second reel and when it does, it operates as a Standard Wild but also will trigger the top Sidewinder reel to spin. When this reel spins, it increases the number of winning ways from 243 up to 576 and it can potentially add up to three Wilds across the reels (there are no other symbols on these reels other than Wilds) to give you a chance at better value wins.
Similarly, the green coloured Bottom Wild can only appear on the fourth reel and it initially acts as a Standard Wild on the spin but when landed, it also triggers the bottom Sidewinder reel, which operates in the same way as the top.
Get very lucky and you can activate both Sidewinder reels on the same spin. This gives you 1125 ways to win on that spin and can increase your chances of a big value win a great deal, especially if those reels land with more than one Wild showing.
Free Spins features
The Sidewinder reels also play a role in triggering the Free Spins bonus round and also throughout Free Spins. The Rainbrew symbol is the Scatter symbol and when you land the scatter on the second and fourth reels, both of the Sidewinder reels will activate and spin, but this time will not contain Wilds, but the Rainbrew Scatter.
Land three Rainbrew Scatters on the reels and you receive six Free Spins, land four and you receive the maximum 10 Free Spins.
During Free Spins the Top and Bottom Sidewinder reels will be active on each spin with Wilds on the reels. On any Free Spin where you land a Wild symbol on the Top and Bottom reels on the same reel, then these Wilds will expand to turn that entire reel Wild for that spin. You can turn all the three middle reels entirely Wild in this way and when you do, you can trigger some of the much larger wins possible on the slot.
Best feature of the Rainbrew slot
Just for the Win have produced a rather unusual slot here, but it is one that works well and while the Sidewinder reels feature in the base game is great fun, it doesn't really produce those mega wins, especially with the relatively low amounts won on a standard spin.
However, the Free Spins bonus game is where you can land some staggering prizes and this part of the slot really ramps up the excitement and action, especially if you can turn one or more of the middle three reels completely Wild, as when this occurs, then you can pocket some very sizeable wins indeed.
The Rainbrew slot is a very well thought out game and while the theme may not be the most original, the way the slot is presented, and the different features of the slot compared to a standard game, mark it out as very different to the norm. It's a middling variance slot with the bigger wins tending to come in Free Spins, which can take a little time to trigger. However, it is great fun to play and the unusual set up of the slot means that it will be one players keep coming back to play time and time again.
