Hammers new Betway deal scoops Premier League Mega Moolah prize

West Ham United fans could be a little more prevalent online and playing games such as Mega Moolah after the news that the club had extended its current record-breaking sponsorship deal with online betting and game provider Betway.

The club announced the news at the end of May, starting that their deal with Betway, who have been the club's official sponsors since 2015, had been extended for another six years, meaning that it will run through until end of May 2025.

As part of the deal, Betway have run a number of initiatives, such as the Betway Fan Taxi, the Betway Academy and the West Ham Supermarket Sweep to encourage closeness and interaction with the Hammers fans.

Speaking about the deal, Karren Brady, Wes Ham's Vice-Chairman stated:

"We are delighted to once again extend our partnership with Betway. After working successful for four years, this is a new, long-term, record-breaking commercial deal for the club, which shows the faith that Betway has in West Ham United and our iconic global identity, which has seen us recognised as one of the world's biggest football brands."

"We look forward to contining to work with Betway as we embark on the next chapter for our great club, and we will use this partnership as a platform for success, both on and off the pitch."

Her words were echoed by Karim Virani, the Digital and Commercial Director at West Ham, who stated:

"We're hugely excited to continue working with such a respected and responsible Principle Partner in Betway. Since the front of shirt sponsorship began, Betway has supported the club in a whole range of ways, by giving their time and energy, as well as their investment.

"This has delivered some fantastic work for good causes around the local boroughs, as well as putting on a number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences for die-hard Hammers fans. Extending this partnership provides the opportunity for this great work to continue for the benefit of our supporters and communities, which are the lifeblood of West Ham United."

Representatives from Betway adopted a similar tone when detailing the new agreement with the CEO of the company, Anthony Werkman stating;

"Our partnership with West Ham United has been a huge success over the past four years and we are proud to be extending it by another six.

"They are a club with one of the most passionate fan bases in the game, who we have built up a strong relationship with by giving them some unforgettable experiences and memories.

"This is something we are wholly committed to and we are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the club."

How much has the Betway deal been worth for West Ham?

When Betway first became the main sponsors of West Ham United back in 2015, the original deal was believed to be worth a total of £20 million, which would be paid to West Ham over three and half years, estimated to be worth around £6.4 million a year or thereabouts. This was far more than the previous deal West Ham had negotiated with Alpari, which was valued at around £3m per year.

However, in the face of stiff competition and with the football sponsorship market increasing in value and size considerably on the back of some monster deals signed by the likes of Manchester Unted, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in recent years, this new deal with Betway is likely to be worth far more to West Ham.

Indeed, early indications are that the size of the current deal has been significantly increased by an extra £7 million per year, which would mean that West Ham would be making around £13.5 million per season as part of the new Betway Deal, confirmed for each of the next six years. However other reports have the figure as closer to the £10m per year mark.

This brings the Hammers on par with the likes of Everton, who also have a betting company, Sportpesa, as their main sponsor and who earn around £9.8 million a year from that partnership.

However, it does mean that in terms of clubs with a sponsor that has links to online betting, casino gaming or similar, that West Ham are the tops when it comes to clubs with these deals, outstripping the money earned by other clubs that have deals with similar organisations.

Who are Betway?

Betway were formed as an Internet-based betting site that focused initially on sports betting, with a heavy focus on football and horse racing betting initially. Since then, the site has grown markedly and it now offers a number of other services including Casino, Live Casino and Vegas options as well as being one of the foremost non-specialist esports bookmaking sites online.

They are perhaps best known for being the casino at which the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot world record holder, Jonathan Heywood, landed his incredible £13.2 million win back in October 2015.

The site carries an extensive range of Microgaming slot games and progressives as well as a number of other slot games from different providers and you can access all the different aspects of the site including casino games and e-sports betting, all from a single Betway account.

What now for West Ham United?

With the new Betway deal in the bag and essentially meaning that the football club is guaranteed a cash injection, the equivalent of one very sizeable Mega Jackpot win per season into the coffers, there's no doubt that Hammers fans and Betway would like to see a return on their investment being reflected in performances on the pitch.

After a shaky start under Manuel Pellegrini, West Ham eventually finished the 2017/18 season in 13th place, well clear of the relegation zone. However with just 10 wins from their 38 games, and a goal difference of -20 over the season, the team needed to make significant improvements to move up the table.

The following season, they achieved that, finishing in 10th place with 52 points and just a -3 goal difference.

The team has seen a number of key players move on this season, notably in forward positions with Marko Arnautovic leaving the club for China and Andy Carroll's contract coming to an end. So far, West Ham have failed to bring in anybody to strengthen in these attacking areas and it seems likely this will be the clubs main focus in the transfer window.

Depending on who they bring in and how well their current crop of stars, which includes Brazilian ace Felipe Anderson and the talented and versatile Michail Antonio, West Ham fans will be hoping the Betway deal signals a charge up the Premier League in the new season.
