Immortal Glory slot review: This is an Olympian-sized high variance slot

It seems appropriate that Just For The Win were the company responsible for the latest Microgaming release, Immortal Glory. This Olympic-themed slot is fashioned on the ancient Greek Olympics and was released at a time when the Tokyo games should have been taking place.

The slot is a 5x4 reel set up and it has a total of 40 non-selectable pay lines across the reels. The good news for smaller stakes players is that you can play from just 0.10 per spin, although higher rollers can ramp that up and go for gold and glory by betting up to 25.00 per spin if they prefer.

This is a very high variance game, so wins can be difficult to come by, especially wins of any particular size, so it is a slot that is best appreciated with smaller sized bets especially if you have a relatively small bankroll as these ancient Olympians can be hungry at times and will be quick to devour a bankroll that is played through at too high a bet amount.

So, what else does the Immortal Glory slot have to offer? We decided to take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

The presentation of the Immortal Glory slot is very nicely done. The setting of the game is an ancient stadium packed to the rafters with a crowd cheering on the athletes and your view is one that the athletes would have had when looking at this imposing site. The reels are located centrally to this, with the main controls to the right.

There are also three jackpots in the game (which we will explain how you can win later in the review) and these are displayed at the top of the screen. These are the Bronze, Silver and Gold Jackpots which of course fit nicely into the Olympics theme.

Add to that a rather inspiring soundtrack of rallying trumpets and soft strings and you have a game that offers something grandiose in terms of how it looks and sounds. The question is, does the game-play follow suit?

What is on the reels?

What is a positive about the Immortal Glory slot is that each of the symbols on the reels ties in nicely with the Olympian theme of the slot. The lower value symbols include a pair of shoes, a discus, a shot and the olive wreath that was historically presented to the winning athlete of an event in the olden games. Wins on these symbols range from a fifth of your bet up to winning back your bet for five across the reels.

This may not sound like much, but symbols can be stacked on the reels and as such, you can win across multiple pay lines to increase the value of a win.

The three higher value symbols are the different athletes and these symbols are stacked four symbols high, so they can completely fill an entire reel on any given spin. Wins range from 0.3x your win up to 5x your win for five of the female athlete symbols. The other symbols on the reels are the Wild symbols and the Jackpot symbols which unlock the main features of the slot as we will explore below.

Wild features

There are Two different Wild symbols on the reels, although they are essentially the same symbol and operate in the same way in the main. The symbol is the Olympic Torch but on the first reel, the torch Is decorated in gold, and on the other reels the torch is a silver colour. The reasons for this are to do with the trigger of the Free Spins bonus as we will explore in more detail below.

Wilds can be landed across the reels and offer wins ranging from 0.7x your bet to 5x your bet. These symbols are also stacked and can fill an entire reel completely, so it is possible that they can be won across multiple pay lines and also facilitate other symbol wins when used as a replacement symbol too. The only symbol a Wild cannot substitute for is the Jackpot symbol.

Free Spins features

To trigger Free Spins in the Immortal Glory slot you need to land the Gold Wild symbol on the first reel and then land one of the other silver Wild symbols on one of the other reels on the same spin. When you do, you will receive five Free Spins but in the Free Spin round, all Wild Stacks become Nudging Wild Stacks.

These Stacks can nudge down or up a reel and if they do and fully cover a reel, then on the next Free Spin, that stack will disappear.

However, if after the fifth Free Spin in your bonus game is completed you still have one or more partially visible Nudging Wild Stack symbols on the reels, this will trigger another bonus feature called the Glory Spin.

Any of these Nudging Wild Stacks you have partially covering a reel after the fifth Free Spin, will expand to cover the entire reel on the Glory Spin and all other reels are spun once more. If you land a win, then you will also receive a random Glory Spin Multiplier bonus which can be 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x the standard win amount.

The other feature to note on the slot is the Jackpot symbol, which is the blue diamond symbol. Land three of these anywhere across the first, third and fifth reels and you will win one of the three jackpot prizes. Bronze is worth 20x your bet, Silver is worth 100x your bet while land the Gold to win the biggest prize available in the game of 10,000x your bet.

Best feature of the Immortal Glory slot

There are a lot of great features on the Immortal Glory slot. The Jackpot part of the game is a nice addition and does give something for players to aim for while playing the base game. The Free Spins bonus is also potentially profitable and the Glory Spin at the end just about makes this the most appealing aspect of the game. That said, the base game can be enjoyable. The one proviso is that you must enjoy playing higher variance games to get the best out of this slot as it can be a tough one to sustain a small bank balance when playing.

Conclusion

If you love higher variance slots with the chance to win 10,000x your initial bet, then the Immortal Glory slot will tick all the right boxes. It looks and sounds excellent, the base game rattles along at a good pace and the bonus features have been well thought out and offer something different to what you get in a standard slot. Higher variance fans and those that like higher jackpots, will love the game, but be warned, these Olympians can take a sizeable bite out of your bankroll at times.
