Jurassic World slot offers 243 Ways to Win and great Free Spins gaming

The original Jurassic Park film, taken from a book by Michael Creighton, was one of Steven Spielberg's biggest ever film successes. The film spawned a number of sequels and then seemingly went extinct.

A few years later the series was rebooted with the ambitious Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt as Owen Brady and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing.

This reincarnation of the franchise proved to be a massive success and after its release in 2015 it became the 4th highest grossing film of all time. Unsurprisingly, a sequel was soon in the pipeline and of course, Microgaming, already thrilled at the success of their Jurassic Park slot, were also very keen to work their magic on a slot version of Jurassic World.

The result is this exciting 5-reel slot which has 243 Ways to Win. The potential to win big is evident in both the base game (via the Indominus bonus feature) and the Free Spins rounds too. So how does this slot shape up compared to both the first Jurassic Park slot and other similar slot games? Let's take a closer look and find out.

When comparing the presentation of Jurassic World with its prequel, Jurassic Park, I feel that this newer game isn't quite as exciting to look at as the previous one. There's no parallax scrolling for example and everything on screen is a little more static. However, the backdrop of the large pool complex from the film is a good choice and contains plenty of detail and the sounds are taken from the movie itself, which adds a degree of depth and realism.

One nice touch is as you trigger the different bonus features of the slot, the backdrop will change to reflect that, so if you trigger the Gyroscope Valley Free Spins game for example, you get a new backdrop behind the reels relating to this location in the film. It's slick and nicely done but it isn't quite as impressive as the Jurassic Park slot, which did have some impressive and unique features in terms of presentation.

What's on the reels?

There is a total of ten standard symbols on the reels, as well as a couple of symbols that relate directly to the main bonus features of the slot. The lowest value symbols are the six different dinosaurs, and these are (in order from lowest winning to highest) the Ankylosaurus, the Pteranadon, the Stegosaurus, the Velociraptor, the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Indominus.

Wins range from just very small amounts (2 coins) up to a maximum of 60 coins for five of the Indominus symbols across the reels. However, to land a profit on a spin, you do need to hit five symbols across a reel or land multiple winning lines together.

The higher value symbols are four characters taken directly from the movie. These are Vic Hoskins, Simon Masrani, Claire Dearing and Owen Brady and these symbols offer better value wins ranging from 15 coins up to 200 coins.

The two other symbols on the reels to look out for are the Wild symbol and the Scatter and these are both linked to the main bonus features of the slot.

Wild features

The Wild symbol is the famous Jurassic Park/Jurassic World skeleton dinosaur logo and the good news is that this symbol is stacked up to 10 symbols high across the reels. It can substitute for all symbols bar the Scatter, Furthermore, land three, four or five Wilds across the reels and you will win a prize that increases in value from 1x your total bet onwards.

One other thing to note regarding Wild symbols is that if you land just two Scatter symbols in the base game, then these two symbols will act as additional Wild symbols for that spin and that can be very useful for triggering good value base game wins, when you just miss out on triggering some of the key bonus features of the slot.

Free Spins features

The Scatter symbol, which is a mosquito encased in amber, is the key to the main bonus features of the slot and you need three or more of these symbols to trigger a pay-out ranging from 1x to 100x your total bet. In addition, you will also trigger a randomly selected Free Spins bonus out of three different games available.

In the Gyrosphere Valley game, there is a Multiplier Trail in position on the reels. You receive 10 Free Spins in this bonus and each time you spin and do not win, the multiplier value will increase by one on the trail. This continues up to the maximum 7x multiplier and when you land a win, the trail will reset back to the standard 2x the standard win.

The second potential Free Spins bonus game is Raptor Den. In this game you also get 10 Free Spins and you have Wild Scatters on the reels. This means every scatter symbol can act as a Wild on the reels along with all the standard Wilds. Furthermore, if you land a Scatter, it will be held on the screen until you land a total of three Scatters on the reels, at which point you will be given five additional Free Spins.

The third bonus feature is Creation Lab and you also receive 10 Free Spins in this bonus. During your Free Spins, Rolling Reels is in operation and this means that when you land a win, the winning symbols disappear after you have been paid out and then new symbols drop down from above, meaning it is possible to land two or more wins from the same single Free Spin. During this feature, you also have special Cryo Wilds on the reels, which when landed, will remain in the same spot for three wins before they melt away. If they play a part in a winning spin, then they remain on the reels, but drop down one spot when the Rolling Reels feature triggers.

Initially, you don't have a choice over which Free Spins bonus to play as they are triggered randomly, but once you have triggered Free Spins 15 times in total, then you will be able to select which of the bonuses to play on subsequent triggers of the Free Spins feature.

Lastly, there is also a bonus feature that is in operation in the base game. This is the Indominus feature and it can be triggered on any spin when you land a win of between 3 and 5 times your stake. When this occurs, if the huge Indominus Rex appears on screen, it can boost those winnings up to an incredible 1,000 times your total stake.

Best feature of the Jurassic World slot

Although there are a number of nice features on the Jurassic World slot, I think the most attractive of these for a player is the trio of Free Spins bonuses. That's not to say the Indominus feature cannot be very useful in the base game, it can and it can trigger some sizeable wins, but I just feel that the trio of different Free Spins bonuses give Jurassic World a little depth and the games are so different that you want to play through and try each one to see which offers you the best chance of a return.

For me, Jurassic World is a very good slot with some excellent bonus features, but I think it does lack a little sparkle in terms of presentation, especially when compared to its forerunner, the Jurassic Park slot. That said, if you are not too fussed about those additional flourishes to the game, Jurassic World is a fine video slot in its own right and has been nicely done by Microgaming and as a medium variance game, it offers regular pay-outs and the occasional big value win to keep players keen, though you do need patience at times to land those larger wins.
