Kanga Cash Extra slot's Free Spins bonus is the best of the game's features

Recently, one of Microgaming's content aggregator companies, Ainsworth Interactive, released Kanga Cash Extra, a slot game based on the famous marsupials that inhabit Australia.

This higher variance game is aimed at medium stakes players squarely, with a minimum bet amount of 1.00 per spin and a maximum bet of 20.00. It also comes with two bonus features and Wild symbols on the reels. Plus there are three non-progressive jackpot prizes available to be won, the Grand Bonus is the largest at 15,000, then the Major at 1,000 and then the Minor bonus prize of 250.

Let's take a closer look now at what the Kanga Cash Extra slot offers customers that are ready to venture Down Under for some slots entertainment.

Presentation

Set in the Australian outback, with a kangaroo to the side of the reels on the left, the backdrop to the slot is a very starry night. Ainsworth have made a real effort to make the backdrop interesting with stars that twinkle, the occasional shooting star and fireflies that appear on either side of the reels as you play the game. The graphics are nicely done and do hammer home the Australian feel of the slot quite nicely.

The music is rather quiet in the game but the effect is a nice and soothing accompaniment to the game, although to my ears it sounds more country and western rather than Australian. The sound effects do tend to drown out the music as you play though so to be honest, after a short time you tend not to notice it particularly.

What is on the reels?

There are nine standard symbols on the reels, plus a special Boomerang Symbol, the Kangaroo Scatter symbol and the Wild, these three symbols are linked to the main bonus features of the slot which we will look at in more detail in the sections below.

The standard symbols begin with the ubiquitous playing card symbols from the nine through to the ace. The 9 and 10 are the lower paying two on the slot offering wins of 0.5x your bet up to 10x your bet. While the Jack, Queen, King and Ace offer from0.8x your bet to 12.5x your bet.

The three higher value symbols are the three animal symbols, the hooded lizard, the dingo and the bird of prey. These offer wins from 0.3x your bet up to 30x your bet, but it is worth knowing that these three symbols do offer wins for just two symbols on one of the ten pay lines in the base game.

Wild features

The Wild symbol is easy to spot as it has the word Wild written large over a map of Australia and it only serves as a substitute in the game for the standard symbols outlined above. In addition, it can only appear on the middle three reels, so it cannot produce any wins of its own.

Free Spins features

To trigger the Free Spins bonus, you need to land three or more of the Boomerang symbols on a pay line from left to right. Not only do you trigger the Free Spins bonus when this occurs, but you also win the total amount displayed on all the Boomerang symbols that triggered the bonus round too.

In Free Spins you use a slightly different reel set for your five Free Spins. In addition, each Free Spin has a repeat win prize associated with it, which is equal to the amount you won on the Boomerang Symbols you landed when triggering the game.

In this game, each time you land a Kanga sunset icon, you will win the repeat win prize. There are also Kanga Sunset Major and Minor symbols on the reel which can trigger the repeat win prize but which can also trigger a win on one of those two jackpot prizes if landed across the reels.

There is another bonus feature that offers free respins and this is the Spin and Hold feature. If you land six or more of the Kanga Sunset symbols on the reels during the base game, you receive 3 free respins of the reels. These symbols are held in place and on your respins, if you can add more symbols to those you land, the value of your win will increase and the respins are reset to three once again.

The feature continues until you run out of respins, or you turn the entire reel set into Sunset symbols, in which case you will win the Grand Bonus prize, which is 15,000.

Best feature of the Kanga Cash Extra slot

There are some nice features on the Kanga Cash Extra slot but I think the Free Spins bonus is the best of the bunch. It can offer some excellent wins when landed and the chance to win two of the three jackpot prizes is also a positive. The inclusion of the repeat win prize is a really clever move and does mean that you tend to get a better value return on Free Spins than you do in the base game or even with the Spin and Hold feature.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, for me the Kanga Cash Extra slot is a game that has some fine elements to it, but which suffers due to a lack of clarity and being unnecessarily complex. It is frustrating to land three Boomerangs or five Kanga Sunset icons and receive nothing for that, it takes an age to trigger the bonus features and at 1.00 per bet, that means sessions are not cheap. If you have the bankroll and the patience, then there is a great deal to this slot, but for lower stakes and micro stakes players, this could be a game that takes too big a bite out of your bankroll than you are comfortable with. That is a shame as had it played a little more player friendly, I think it would have encouraged those players to play.
