Presentation

The presentation on the Wild Krakatoa slot is very nicely done. The backdrop to the game is a jungle and blue sky, although you can't actually make out much detail as the background has been blurred to bring the focus forward to the reels.

The reels sit in the centre of the screen and are framed by bamboo, which is a nice touch. A gentle soundtrack accompanies you as you spin and in the base game, the sound and tempo of the game is rather gentle and easy-going, which contrasts with the fury of the Volcano which is more evident when you trigger some of the bonus features on the slot.

Together with the design of the symbols, which we will look at in a bit more detail below, this is a slot which does have a very nice set up, and which is markedly less in your face than you would expect given the title of the game.

What is on the reels?

There are a number of Indonesian themed symbols on the reels, although somewhat disappointingly we start with five playing card symbols, which range from the 10 through to the Ace. Wins can range from 3 symbols up to six (due to the expanding middle reel in the Wild bonus feature which we will outline below) and generally the 6 symbol wins pay 10x as much as the three symbol wins.

The medium value symbols on the reels include the fish, the lily and the conch shell. These offer a greater value of wins compared to the lower value slots, offering up to 10x your bet for six of the Conch shells across the reels.

The three higher value symbols are the Toucan, the Indonesian Man, and the Indonesia lady, the latter of which is the highest paying of all the symbols in the game offering up to 83.3 times your total bet as the highest value jackpot in the base game.

There are two other symbols on the reels, the Wild and Scatter which unlock a couple of the main bonus features in the game.

Wild features

The Krakatoa volcano is the Wild symbol and it is used primarily as a substitute for any of the standard symbols outlined above to land a win. However, you can land them in stacks to help land a number of pay line wins from the same spin but there is also one special feature that the Wild has when landed in full on the third reel.

If you can land a full stack on that third reel, then the Krakatoa Feature triggers. This adds a temporary extra reel next to the third reel, moving the fourth and fifth reel along one place. This additional reel is also stacked with Wilds and increases the wins you had in the base game from 3 or 4 or 5 symbols to 4, 5 or 6 symbols.

In addition, triggering this feature also gets you one extra free Respin of the other reels with the middle two reels held as Stacked Wilds, which can result in some extra wins for you if you are lucky (but a win is not guaranteed on the Respin).

Free Spins features

The Bonus feature is the rather strange looking native mask with fire in the mouth and this only appears on the middle three reels in the base game. When you land three of these symbols on the reels on a single spin, you will receive eight Free Spins.

During Free Spins, the size of the reels increases to 6x3 and you will also see the third and fourth reels remain locked with stacked Wilds for the duration of the bonus round, which of course gives you a much better chance of landing a win.

Furthermore, if you can land two more Scatter symbols on the second or fifth reels, you will receive two more Free Spins added to your total.

Best feature of the Wild Krakatoa slot

Essentially what you have here is a simple, but enjoyable slot game that is rather basic but which is livened up by two excellent bonus features. The Wild Krakatoa bonus feature is good and can lead to some sizeable wins (although the number of respins that end winless is a bit disappointing) but for me the Free Spins bonus round, while tricky to land at times, is the best feature of the slot and can result in some of the better wins in the game, although I would have liked to see a multiplier used somewhere in one of the bonuses to liven things up still further.

Conclusion

With a name like Wild Krakatoa you do expect a somewhat loud and somewhat frenzied slot, so the gentle pace of the game is somewhat surprising but it does lead to a very enjoyable experience. The slot is a simple enough game that is made markedly more exciting thanks to a couple of great bonus features that really give the game the added edge you need. As higher variance slots go, this is one of the better ones and well worth a few spins.
