Our Days slot is a Manga-inspired love story: Read our review
I remember when I first heard about Manga cartoons and being struck by how similar they were to a TV show I used to love watching when I was a child called Battle of the Planets. Back then, Manga cartoons were more about dark super-heroes and were not afraid of dealing with more adult themes.
So when Microgaming released a manga-inspired slot, I was thinking it would be along the same lines. Our Days sounded like it could be some kind of zombie-filled game, in the style of films like 28 Days Later or similar.
But no, instead what we have here is a very different change of pace for a slot game. This is a slot aimed squarely, I believe, at the fairer sex as it tells of a gentle love story between five besotted young teens (although who they are besotted with, I am not quite sure), it doesn't appear to be each other.
In truth, I was a bit puzzled as to what the Our Days slot was actually about to be honest, it isn't hugely clear, is it about school, life and love? Or just some strange Manga-inspired symbols thrown together in a slot? It could be either. Still, looks aren't everything, so my wife keeps telling me, so with that in mind, let's take a closer look at the Our Days slot itself.

The setting of the Our Days slot is a school classroom, which I think given the fact that you are not allowed to use images that will appeal to children in slot games or gambling, isn't probably the smartest move that Microgaming have made in recent times. The backdrop is soft hued and you could argue, I suppose that this is a further education setting, but the fact that he main characters in the slot appear to be in school uniform doesn't help matters.
The music is a rather anodyne romance-inspired instrumental soundtrack that isn't too offensive on the ears but which is rather more supermarket music than anything genuinely inspiring. Overall, the slot looks and sounds OK, I just feel that given the market that the game will be targeted at, the choice of a school setting wasn't the wisest move.
What is on the reels?
There are ten standard symbols in the game and these can broadly be split into two different groups. The first are the lower value symbols which are the trinkets in the game which include a love letter, a knitted scarf (!), a diary, a jar and a lunchbox containing sushi. These offer wins from 0.5x your total bet up to 1.4x your total bet, so hardly a massive amount of money.
Higher value symbols are all the characters in the Our Days story, and these include the token schoolboy, plus four different school girls. Cash prizes range from 0.7x your bet up to 2x your bet for five of the highest value symbols across the reels.
One thing to note that this is a very low variance game so although the win amounts are generally small, you do tend to win very frequently and that means that this is a slot better suited to those who prefer regular smaller value wins, or who like to maintain a decent bankroll.
One nice feature is that on every winning spin the Re-Spin bonus will kick. In. When this happens, the reels with the winning symbols are held and the remaining reels are re-spun. If you add more symbols to the win, then you will earn a bigger value win and also re-spin the reels again. This bonus continues until you either fill the reels completely, or you spin without adding to the value of your win.
The Our Days logo is the Wild symbol in the game and they only appear in the base game. They can substitute for all the symbols in the game, apart from the Scatter symbols, to help land better value wins across the reels. There is no separate payout for landing Wilds across the reels.
Free Spins features
The Scatter symbol is the wind up toy of a young boy and girl. Land three or more of the Scatters to earn a prize of 1x, 2x or 3x your total bet, depending on the number of Scatters landed on the spin. If you hit three Scatters you win 8 Free Spins, four Scatters sees you land 12 Free Spins while land all five for 12 Free Spins.
During Free Spins, only the five higher value symbols are on the reels for the duration of the round and of course, this makes it much easier to land higher value wins on each of your spins and it is possible to win up to 90,000 coins in this bonus section of the game.
Best feature of the Our Days slot
Although the Free Spins bonus is the best value of the bonus features in the Our Days slot, I think the Respin bonus just shades it here because it triggers far more often and can lead to some of the better value wins in the base game. The presentation of the slot is nice if you like Manga-inspired cartoons but once again, I feel the subject matter could have been better chosen given the new legislation in place in the UK in particular.
I'll be honest, if you want to play a romance-inspired slot from Microgaming then I would suggest different options like Immortal Romance or Love Island. Our Days is nice enough and it does have some nice features and low variance, but the game itself is just rather bland and the fact it seems to be based in a school makes me wonder how it will be viewed in the United Kingdom. On the plus side, it is a change of pace from the usual offering from Microgaming but I don't think this is as good a quality as many of their most recent releases.
You can play this fantastic new slot at any of our Mega Moolah casinos.
