Plunder the The Amazing Aztecs slot for all its loot

The Aztec civilisation are popularised in many different ways. They thrived in mid Mexico from between the fourteenth through to the sixteenth century, before they ran into the conquistador Cortes and his men, and things went a little pear-shaped following then.

Their society is best remembered by children as being one that offered sacrifices to their gods, but the Aztecs were also a very advanced culture, ensuring education for all and they also are purportedly the inspiration behind Chewing Gum and chocolate.

Long after their culture was eradicated by a succession of colonialists, their magnificent edifices and temples remain to this day as reminders as to what a successful, vibrant and forward-thinking culture they once were. And to think they were all wiped out due to their vast reserves of gold and the fact that the Spanish invaders had gunpowder, while the local Aztecs did not.

Their story is the inspiration behind Just for the Win's newest slot, Amazing Aztecs. How amazing is this slot? Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

The presentation of the slot is in a cartoon style and it works very well. As was the case with the Aztec civilisation, gold plays a prominent role on the reels and the design of the fonts, the reels and the backdrop to the slot, not to mention the excellent background music and sound effects capture the essence of the game very nicely indeed.

Just for the Win have created some very nice looking slots in the past including the recent release Temple of Tut and Goldwyn's Fairies, and this latest addition to their range certainly keeps pushing the high standard of presentation evident in both previous slots, onto new heights.

What is on the reels?

I'm delighted to report that Just for the Win have done away with the somewhat annoying and ubiquitous playing card symbols for their new Amazing Aztec's slot and what we have here are essentially three different types of symbols on the reels, each of which offers slightly different levels of pays for three, four or five symbols on a line.

The first group of symbols are the different patterns, which are coloured blue, green, purple, yellow and orange, These offer smaller value wins of 0.5x your bet, 1x your bet and 2x your bet for 3, 4 or 5 symbols across the reels.

There are also four character symbols and these offer slightly better pay outs starting at 1x, 2x and 4x your stake for the lowest value character, up to 2x, 4x and 8x your stake for the highest.

The biggest value symbol however is the Amazing Aztecs logo, which offers wins of 2.5 times your stake for three symbols, 5x your stake for four and the game jackpot of 10x your stake for five across the reels. It is worth remembering here that the slot is a 243-ways to win game, rather than having pay line which does increase your chances of a win markedly.

Wild features

The Amazing Aztecs slot does not have any Wild symbols as part of the game, which to be truthful, is something of a disappointment.

Free Spins features

The Amazing Aztecs slot doesn't have a free spins feature as you would recognise it from another game. You can't hit scatters and trigger a number of free spins. However, every time that you land a win, you do trigger one additional free spin and that comes in the form of the Giant Re-Spin bonus.

When you hit a win, the eyes of the dragons that lie around the reels, will light up. The symbol that has just landed you a win will then expand into a larger symbol. This can be 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4 symbols in across and high. After these symbols have expanded, your free spin then takes place. Of course, if you manage to land one or more of the Giant Symbols on the reels, then you can win some sizeable cash across multiple winning lines.

One positive of this feature is that it triggers after every base game win, which means that unlike Free Spins bonuses, you won't have to wait too long for the next opportunity to win comes along.

Best feature of the Amazing Aztecs slot

In truth, the Amazing Aztecs slot is a slot game that has just one single feature, that Giant Re-Spin but in truth, the fact that you have a bonus that you can trigger every time you land a win, no matter how small, does make the slot a lot more interesting and varied than playing a game which takes forever to trigger the free spins bonus. I also like the fact that the Amazing Aztec slot's minimum pay out amount is half of your total bet. That means when you do hit a Giant Re-Spin, you stand a decent chance of earning back a decent value win when you add up the triggering bet, plus any winnings you get from the Giant Re-Spin.

Conclusion

While any modern slot that does away with a Free Spins bonus game and a Wild symbol is always taking a risk, especially knowing how popular both are with slots gamers in general, I think that Just for the Win's new slot for Microgaming works very well. It's presented very nicely of course, but I think the fact that you can trigger the key bonus of the slot frequently and without having to wait 80, 100 or even more spins to trigger it, makes it eminently playable and fun. The wins on the slot are not massive however and although this is a medium variance game, it is more likely to appeal to the smaller stakes player than higher rollers.
