Superspins can lead to sizeable wins in the new Reel Talent slot

A review of the Reel Talent slot from Just for the Win and Microgaming

Myriads of talent shows and popularity contests seem to "clog" the screens every week nowadays. The likes of X-Factor, Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent have made stars out of winners and earned notoriety for some of its worst performers in equal measure.

Little wonder, due to their huge popularity, that Microgaming have decided to team up with Just For The Win once again to launch their latest slot. It is called Reel Talent and it is based on a talent show, with four different performers trying to earn a shot at one of three Superspin bonuses.

Like other Just For The Win games such as the Sidewinder slot, Amazing Aztecs slot, Temple of Tut slot, or Deco Diamonds slot or even the Lucky Links slot, this is a little different to the standard slot fare that we have been used to from Microgaming, there are no free spins bonuses to trigger for example, but does that work well in the game, or is it to its detriment?

Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

The presentation on the Reel Talent slot is very nicely done. Just For The Win have captured the essence of these popular TV talent shows quite beautifully and the fact that they have used an appealing mix of purples and blues as their main colours, gives the slot a very futuristic feel too.

The fact that the main characters in the Reel Talent slot are all animals adds a cutesy factor to the game too and with a gentle but inspiring soundtrack to the play along to, this is a game that certainly ticks all the right boxes and would get a 'Yes from Me' should it be auditioning itself.

To the left of the reels are the three Symbol Storage boxes, which we will explain more in the bonus sections below. The slot has 5 reels and 20 non-selectable pay lines. Spins start though at just 0.10 per spin up to a maximum of 100 per spin for higher rollers.

One thing to note is that the game does not have a dedicated Free Spins round but does have Respin bonuses, which again we will look at in more detail later in the review. It is also a highly volatile slot, so players should be well aware of this before they sit down to give the game a few spins.

What is on the reels?

There are a total of nine standard symbols on the reels and these all pay wins that are expressed as a multiplier of your total bet, The four lower value symbols are the pack of cards, the guitar, the flaming torch and the microphone. These offer wins that range from 0.3x your total bet up to 5x your total bet, although you can land multiple wins across the lines on a single spin to increase the value of the bets.

The four characters taking part in the Reel Talent competition are the higher value symbols on the reel and these include the Rabbit Magician, the Wolf Rock Star, the Crocodile Fire Eater and the Lion Singer. Wins from these symbols range from 0.7x your stake up to 15x your stake for five of the Lion Singer symbols across the reels.

The final symbol is the Reel Talent logo, which offers the highest value wins ranging from 1.5x to 50x your bet wins, which makes this by far and away the most valuable of all the symbols on the reels, although landing these symbols, especially in the bonus features can be tough.

That means that jackpot size on the slot from the standard symbols isn't great and many of the wins you land do not pay out more than your stake and it is this which makes the Reel Talent slot so volatile. The flip side of that though is, of course, you can land some sizeable wins, especially when you trigger some of the bonus features of the slot.

Wild features

The Wild symbol is simply the word Wild written as the symbol and it is rather simply used in the game as it solely acts as a substitute for the other nine symbols on the reels. Unfortunately, it does not offer any multiplier bonuses and nor does it offer a higher value pay out for landing several on a winning line.

Free Spins feature

The Reel Talent slot does not have a dedicated Free Spins bonus round, but instead of that it does have a number of re-spin bonuses that are called Superspins. There are three different types of these that you can unlock and to do so, you need to access and trigger one of the other key features of the slot, the Symbol Storage bonus.

To trigger the bonus, you must first land a winning spin. When you land a winning spin, every symbol that is used to form a winning line on that spin is stored in the Symbol Storage box. You then receive another re-spin of the reels to see if you can land another win. If you do, you will get a third re-spin to see If you can fill all three boxes with symbols from separate lines on a single paid spin (essentially by hitting three or more winning lines on a spin, or across two or three consecutive spins), then you trigger the Superspin feature.

The different variety of the three winning symbols you collected in your initial spin and any subsequent re-spins of the reels will determine which of the three Superspin games you will play. If you have just one symbol (which you landed three times), then you go to the Solo Performance Superspin Level, two different symbols from your three and you get the Big Stage Superspin level and if, most likely, you have three different symbols you play the Showtime Superspin level.

With these Superspins it is only the symbols you landed that are evident on the reel, so you are far more likely to earn a bigger win spinning the 1 symbol Solo Performance Superspin than you are the 2 or 3-symbol bonus games. Indeed, if you manage to trigger the bonus with just one symbol then you are guaranteed a win.

Best feature of the Reel Talent slot

There's no doubt that the best feature of the Reel Talent slot is those Superspins and they can lead to some sizeable wins, especially if you are lucky enough to trigger the Solo Performance Superspin where you can win over 600 times your stake. Other Superspins bonuses though are generally good value, but it does take a good while to trigger them and as a result, this is a game which can take a big chunk out of your bankroll if you are playing with too high a wager on your spin.

Conclusion

There's lots to enjoy on the Reel Talent slot and it is nice to see Microgaming and Just For The Win offering us a slot which is different to the usual Wild and Free Spins bonus game. The Superspins bonuses are great value, but they are somewhat tough to trigger at times and as a higher volatility slot, carefully bankroll management is required to get the best out of it. However, if you persevere, then you will find Reel Talent is a fun and enjoyable slot to play which has a lot going for it.
