The biggest and best progressive slots to play in 2018

The biggest and best progressive slots to play in 2018

What is the biggest (and possibly the best) progressive jackpot slot that you can play online today? To answer that question more fully, we first need to determine what we mean by the 'biggest'. Do we mean in terms of jackpot size or the number of times the progressive paid out in 2017 in total?

The different criteria are important in deciding which is the biggest progressive jackpot game online at present, but I feel that some are more important than others and it is these criteria which we shall focus on in more detail when we come to compare the six top games we have selected for this article.

To be fair, we have selected two games from each of the top three slot providers in the world today, Microgaming, Net Entertainment, and Playtech and before we start comparing each game, we are going to look at the key data for each including how much the slot paid out in 2017 across a number of categories.

Furthermore, we will bring you a brief description of the slot and how it plays. After we have done this for all six slots, we will then compare them across three key categories: How often the jackpot was triggered in 2017, what the Average Jackpot win was in 2017 and what the total amount paid out was in 2017.

For convenience of comparison, all jackpot amounts are quoted in euros.

Let's begin now by taking a look at each of the six slot games in focus.

Mega Moolah (Microgaming)

  • Number of Reels - 5
  • Lines - 25
  • Cost to Play (Min to Max) - 0.25 to 125.00
  • Other Games: Mega Moolah Isis, Mega Moolah 5-Reel Drive, Mega Moolah Summertime
  • Number of times jackpot won in 2017- 12
  • Average size of jackpot in 2017 - €4,722,140
  • Biggest Jackpot win in 2017 - €9,570,638
  • Smallest Jackpot win in 2017 - €1,413,204
  • Total amount paid out in 2017 - €56,665,682

Microgaming's Mega Moolah holds the world record for the biggest online progressive jackpot pay out ever when it paid out over €17,879,645 (£13,209,300) to UK player Jon Heywood in October 2015. Up until 2017, the highest number of times the jackpot had been triggered was six, but 2017 saw more records smashed with 12 different jackpot winners of this African themed slot. There are actually four different versions, or themes, of Mega Moolah you can play, each of which pays into the same progressive jackpot fund. Those themes are the original African, but also Egyptian, American and a Summer version. In addition to the Mega Jackpot, players can also win smaller value Mini, Minor and Major jackpots too when spinning the randomly triggered Jackpot Wheel.

Major Millions (Microgaming)

  • Number of Reels - 5
  • Lines - 15
  • Cost to Play (Min to Max) - 0.20 to 3.00
  • Other Games: Major Millions 3-Reel version (1 pay line)
  • Number of times jackpot won in 2017- 21
  • Average size of jackpot in 2017 - €792,022
  • Biggest Jackpot win in 2017 - €1.932,469
  • Smallest Jackpot win in 2017 - €252,071
  • Total amount paid out in 2017 - €16,632,481

Major Millions is actually two different slot games, a 3-reel single pay line game that is ideal for retro-slot fans, and 5-reel 15-line game. Both can only be played for 3.00 per spin if you want to win the progressive jackpot prize (you can play the game for less, but if you do, you cannot win the progressive jackpot). Major Millions was triggered a massive 21 times throughout 2017, although the amount won tends to be considerably smaller than on the Mega Moolah game. The MAjor Millions slot is based on a military theme and features some top notch graphics and sounds.

Jackpot Giant (Playtech)

  • Number of Reels - 5
  • Lines - 50
  • Cost to Play (Min to Max) - 0.50 to 4.00
  • Other Games: None
  • Number of times jackpot won in 2017- 0
  • Average size of jackpot in 2017 - n/a
  • Biggest Jackpot win in 2017 - n/a
  • Smallest Jackpot win in 2017 - n/a
  • Total amount paid out in 2017 - n/a

Jackpot Giants is the Playtech slot that as far as can be ascertained, has not yet triggered a jackpot (at least we are not able to find any information) since it was first released. The jackpot on this slot has now crept upwards of €9,381,440 (at time of writing). Although you can play this slot from 0.50 per spin, you need to wager the maximum 4.00 in order to stand a chance of winning the big progressive prize.

Beach Life (Playtech)

  • Number of Reels - 5
  • Lines - 20
  • Cost to Play (Min to Max) - 10.00 to 10.00
  • Other Games: No
  • Number of times jackpot won in 2017- 1
  • Average size of jackpot in 2017 - €2,508,098
  • Biggest Jackpot win in 2017 - €2,508,098
  • Smallest Jackpot win in 2017 - €2,508,098
  • Total amount paid out in 2017 - €2,508,098

The theme of the Beach Life slot is relatively easy to understand and it is, like most Playtech slots, beautifully presented, although it is more dated than the Jackpot Giant slot from the same company. In order to win the progressive jackpot, you need to land the Wild Sun symbol on the 20th pay line that's not a problem as you have to play all 20 pay lines on each spin, but from 0.50 per line, that is a minimum bet of 10.00 per spin, which is a bit expensive for some lower stakes gamblers.

Mega Fortune Dreams (Net Entertainment)

  • Number of Reels - 5
  • Lines - 20
  • Cost to Play (Min to Max) - 0.20 to 80.00
  • Other Games: None
  • Number of times jackpot won in 2017- 6
  • Average size of jackpot in 2017 - $3,873,843
  • Biggest Jackpot win in 2017 - €5,505,272
  • Smallest Jackpot win in 2017 - €3,038,963
  • Total amount paid out in 2017 - €23,243,056

Net Entertainment have a reputation for developing high quality slots and that extends to their progressive slot offering, the most eye-catching of which is the Mega Fortune Dreams progressive. Based on the idea of living the life of the rich and famous (which is what you could do if you win the big progressive), this is the sequel to the popular Mega Fortunes progressive. This slot produced several sizeable winners during 2017 too and with spins available from just 0.20 per game.

Hall of Gods (Net Entertainment)

  • Number of Reels - 5
  • Lines - 20
  • Cost to Play (Min to Max) - 0.20 to 100.00
  • Other Games: None
  • Number of times jackpot won in 2017- 2
  • Average size of jackpot in 2017 - €7,330,425
  • Biggest Jackpot win in 2017 - €7,525,216
  • Smallest Jackpot win in 2017 - €7,135,635
  • Total amount paid out in 2017 - €14,660,851

Based on Norse mythology and featuring some neat sound effects and bonus games, the Hall of Gods slot can be played from just 0.20 per spin which again makes it accessible for lower stake players. The way to win the progressive jackpot is to land the Pick a Win feature. Then match three amounts and you will win the prize stated. As well as cash prizes, if you uncover three Progressive Jackpot prizes here then you will win that big prize too.

How do the top six slots compare in three key categories?

Let's now take a look at how these six slots compare against each other in three key categories, namely:

  • Number of times the biggest progressive jackpot was triggered in 2017
  • The average payout of the progressive jackpot in 2017
  • The total amount paid out by the slot in 2017

The Verdict

Looking at the data above it is clear that Microgaming's progressive network is by far the biggest and possibly the best as well. Two of the most popular Microgaming jackpot slots; Mega Moolah and Major Millions paid out 80 million in 2017. That's twice the amount of Net Entertainment's two top jackpot slots paid out in the same year.

If we look at the raw data not just for 2017, but going back over the years and weighing up all the different factors into what makes a progressive jackpot slot, we have come up with the following rankings for the best online progressive slot games you can play today:

  1. Mega Moolah - After an incredible 2017, following on from a World Record payout in 2015, Mega Moolah lives up to its name over and over again. It is clearly the most popular online progressive slot and no one can argue with that.
  2. Mega Fortune Dreams - Net Entertainment's top progressive has enjoyed a very good return for some players in 2017 but it is still dwarfed by Microgaming's giant which paid out more than double the amount in jackpot prizes and double the amount of prizes.
  3. Major Millions - Microgaming's older slot has seen the number of jackpots won and the size of jackpots increase in 2016 and 2017 in particular, can it continue this upward trend in 2018?
  4. Hall of Gods - It was a close cal between Net Entertainment's second slot and Major Millions, but although the average jackpot on Hall of Gods is much higher, you have far less chance of landing it with it being triggered just twice this year, compared to 21 times for Major Millions.
  5. Beach Life - Playtech's offering is some way behind the top four with just one trigger but for a decent amount of money.
  6. Jackpot Giant - Playtech's figurehead slot may be one of the most heavily promoted of its progressive but it is hurt by the fact that not a single player has won the jackpot since the game was first released. It does have a massive jackpot currently available however the odds of winning seems to be difficult or perhaps impossible.
