What secrets will you uncover in the new Lara Croft Temples and Tombs slot?
You may remember that a little while back, we brought you news that one of Microgaming's partner companies, Triple Edge Studios, had been tasked with developing the third in the series of Tomb Raider/Lara Croft games.
The first was the original Tomb Raider slot and this was then followed a few years later by Tomb Raider: Secret of the Sword and both these games were big hits for Microgaming over the years. Several years later, it was decided to create the third in this popular series of slots and now Triple Edge Studios have released this brand new and updated game.
This new version of Lara Croft is superior to the older version in many ways. The graphics are cleaner, smarter and more up to date. The game itself looks much more like a modern slot, and less a dated game as the older games do nowadays.
It's still a 5-reel slot game but it boasts 243 Ways to Win and there is also the Rolling Reels feature in operation in the game, which can lead to successive wins and a multiplier being applied to these wins, up to 5x in the base game and 15x in Free Spins.
So how does this important new addition to the Tomb Raider family of slots play? We decided to take a closer look to find out.

The presentation of the Lara Croft Temples and Tombs slot is very nicely done. The backdrop is an ancient tomb or temple somewhere that is racking and decaying and bathed in a somewhat eerie blue light. A cutaway section of the wall reveals the five reels with three symbols on each, although in this game they are not reels as the symbols drop down from above into the different sections. All the key controls of the slot are shown below and the three jackpots you can win (which we will explain more of below) are listed at the top of the screen.
The sound and graphics of the slot are excellent and are a marked improvement on the older games, which look a little jaded nowadays. Lara has a sleek new look, but is still very much identifiable as the famous character, the symbols are all neatly designed and the sound is also very atmospheric and in keeping with the theme of the slot. Certainly in terms of how the slot looks and plays, Triple Edge Studios have done the Lara Croft series proud with their newest addition.
What is on the reels?
Pleasingly, we have none of the too-familiar playing card low symbols on the reels here. The lower value symbols are all tools that Lara would use on one of her quests and includes the likes of a water bottle, a flaming torch, a back pack and a rope and grappling iron. The win sizes for three symbol wins are quite small but can increase thanks to the Multiplier Trail which is triggered when you land successive Rolling Reels wins. In the base game, the Multiplier Trail goes from 1x to 2x to 3x to 5x for consecutive wins.
There are a number of higher value symbols including two golden death mask symbols (one of a dog god, Canis, and one of an alligator god called Sobek), plus the other four standard symbols all feature Lara Croft in a number of different poses with up to 200 coins to be won for five of the top gold coloured Lara symbols across the reels.
There are a couple of other symbols on the reels to look out for and these are the Wild symbol and the Scatter symbol.
The winged Scarab Beetle Scatter is the Wild symbol and this can appear on the middle three reels only. It can substitute for any of the standard symbols in the base game to help create additional wins and you can land Wilds on the reel during a Rolling Reels activation.
Furthermore, every Wild you land is collected towards triggering one of the three Jackpots available in the game. Once you trigger Rolling Reels and the bonus completes, you have a chance to randomly trigger one of he three jackpot prizes, the Minor, which is the smallest pay out, the Major or the Grand which is the substantially larger prize of 5,000x your standard bet. Get lucky with this random trigger after Rolling Reels and you can win one of the jackpot prizes.
Free Spins features
The book symbol with Lara Croft written in gold letters on the front is the Scatter symbol in the game and you need to land three or more of these symbols across the reels to trigger the Free Spins bonus game.
When triggered you receive 8 Free Spins and Rolling Reels is in play during your bonus, although the Multiplier Trail values are increased by a multiple of three, meaning the lowest value win is 3x your standard bet and the highest is a huge 15x your standard bet. The Free Spins bonus can also be re-triggered from within the bonus game itself, which is a nice bonus.
Best feature of the Lara Croft Temples and Tombs slot
There's lots of good features in the Lara Croft Temples and Tombs slot. The base game itself is good fun to play and as a higher variance slot, there is a very good mix of win. The three Jackpots available and how they are awarded, make them seem more accessible to players and the fact that there is a Free Spins bonus game, does make the game more exciting.
However, it is the Rolling Reels feature which steals the show here. The Multiplier Trail that is part of this feature is what is responsible for players landing some of the much bigger value wins in the game and this triggers relatively frequently, so it is an accessible feature that will have players delighted when they land one of those 5x wins in the base game, or 15x wins in the Free Spins bonus round.
Triple Edge Studios have produced a corker of a game to add to the Tomb Raider collection of slots and Lara Croft Temples and Tombs is a worthy addition to the two previous games. The new slot updates those games very nicely but is also different and modern enough to appeal to newer games for whom this will be their first Tomb Raider slot to play. If you love Tomb Raider, or just love slots with great bonus features, then this one ticks all the right boxes.
