What the stats tell you about how to win Mega Moolah

One of the most common searched for items about the famous Microgaming slot Mega Moolah is people asking the question how they can win Mega Moolah. It's a fair question, people may have heard about the game but not played it and would like to know how they can spin for just 0.25 per spin and then land a life-changing prize.

Others of course are searching for some 'secret formula' that will perhaps unlock the game and the riches it can bestow upon them. There isn't a secret formula to winning of course, but sometimes it can be nice to think that there is.

While not a secret formula, there is one weapon you can use when it comes to trying to increase your chances of landing Mega Moolah. This weapon is the statistics that the slot has generated when it has paid out its winners.

Could we possibly glean some nuggets of information about the best ways to win Mega Moolah from these statistics? What do they tell us? Is Mega Moolah more likely to be won at a certain amount of money more than any other? Is there a date or time which has proven to be the luckiest for Mega Moolah? What currency have the winners being playing with when they landed their prize?

Let's take a look now at what the statistics tell us about Mega Moolah and whether this information can be used going forward to perhaps help you make better choices about when and how to play.

When should I play Mega Moolah?

If you want to maximise your chances of winning Mega Moolah, is there an optimum time of the year, or even the time of the day, when you should focus on playing the game? Have more winners been triggered on certain dates and at certain times more so than others?

Let's look at the data for the 51 recorded Mega Moolah jackpot triggers recorded at MegaMoolah.com and see what the data shows us.

  • Is it the right time to play Mega Moolah?

It certainly seems to be the case that there have been more winners of the Mega Jackpot in recent years than in the past. Comparing the most recent three years compared to the first three years of the game, we had five winners in total between 2007 and 2009 and between 2017 and the first few months of 2019, we have already had 23 winners and there is still nine months of 2019 remaining.

Of course, these figures also show just how much Mega Moolah has grown in popularity over the years and suggests that there are more winners now because there are a lot more players playing the game nowadays, which means of course larger prize pools and of course more chances of someone landing a winning spin.

The most successful year in terms of Mega Moolah jackpot triggers remains 2017 with 13 wins in the calendar year. In contrast, 2007, 2008 and 2010 all saw just one winner apiece.

Since the game began there have been on average around four winners per year.

  • What month sees the most Mega Moolah wins?

The data for the number of wins in each month of the year in terms of the Mega Moolah top progressive jackpot prize is very interesting. The good news is that we have seen at least two winners in every month of the year so far, although there are certain periods of the year which seem to trigger more winners than the others. Let's start with seasons before we look at individual months.

  • Winter - Dec to Feb inclusive - 9 winners
  • Spring - Mar to May inclusive - 17 winners
  • Summer - June to Aug inclusive - 12 winners
  • Autumn - Sep to Nov inclusive - 13 winners

Of course, if you are located in the southern hemisphere then your seasons will be opposite, so you will have nine winners in your summer and 12 winners in your winter, as well as 13 winners in spring and 17 during the autumn.

This does seem to suggest that spring is the best time to play Mega Moolah, while the winter months are less likely to see a winner, however there are a myriad of reasons why this may be the case, such as people having less to spend with celebrations such as Christmas and the New Year to pay for.

In terms of monthly winners, there is again an interesting spread of wins throughout the year with some months being 'luckier' than others in terms of seeing Mega Moolah jackpot winners.

  • January - 4 winners
  • February - 2 winners
  • March - 5 winners
  • April - 6 winners
  • May - 6 winners
  • June - 8 winners
  • July - 2 winners
  • August - 2 winners
  • September - 3 winners
  • October - 4 winners
  • November - 6 winners
  • December - 3 winners

As you can see, the period through from March to June has been the most profitable in terms of Mega Moolah winners with almost half of all the winners of the jackpot landing their prize over this four month period. There is a real drop off in the mid to late summer with just four wins in July and August since the game began, again perhaps because people are busy on summer holidays and the like, so play less than usual.

What can we learn from this data? Well it seems if you want to win any jackpot, March to June is when to play the game, however if you want to stand a chance at a larger progressive jackpot prize, the period from July to October and again from November to March seem to be the best times to try and land a larger jackpot prize.

  • Are there any particular days that seem to see more winners than usual?

As you would imagine, with a total of 51 winners across 365 days in a year (366 in a leap year), most of the winners have landed their prize on a single day, with only a few repeat winners on the same date.

In 2017, we had two occurrences of the Mega Moolah jackpot being won on the same day. On May 22nd 2017 the jackpot was triggered twice and then in the very next month on June 19th, the Jackpot was triggered twice again on that day.

However, the luckiest days in terms of Mega Moolah jackpot wins are June 24th, which has seen two winners awarded and November 15th, which has seen a winner landed on three occasions. The very first win occurred on Mega Moolah on this date and there were other winners who landed their prize on the same date in 2016 and 2017 too.

If you want a longer period which has seen more winners than usual then the two-week period from June 12 through to June 24 has produced 8 winners of the Mega Moolah jackpot prize over the years.

The 9th 15th and 6th day of the month is another day to target as all have produced four winners over the years across four different months. The 19th, 28th, 14th, 5th of the month have all produced three winners over the years.

How should I play Mega Moolah?

In terms of how you should play the game, the Mega Moolah slot has a number of interesting facts. In terms of how you choose to load up the game, either mobile, Instant Play or via a downloaded client software, there is one method that has produced many more winners than the others.

  • Mobile Winners - 27
  • Download Winners - 14
  • Instant Play Winners - 10

Again, this data doesn't highlight that mobile players tend to be more lucky, I believe it shows how many more people are now accessing the Mega Moolah slot from their mobile smartphone or tablet, compared to playing at a desktop via download, or through a browser in Instant Play mode.

The original Mega Moolah game is the one that has triggered by far the most winners and that is likely because the game has been around longer and also has a much larger array of other prizes to be won in the base game (the free spins jackpot prize in Mega Moolah is 225,000 coins, compared to 10,000 coins for the other games available today).

What currency should I use to play Mega Moolah?

The facts and figures for wins in each of the seven currencies that have seen a Mega Moolah jackpot won is very interesting and lets start with a simple count of how many times the jackpot has been won in each currency:

  • Canadian Dollars - 14 times
  • Euro - 14 times
  • United States Dollars - 8 times
  • British Pounds - 5 times
  • Australian Dollars - 4 times
  • New Zealand Dollars - 4 times
  • South African Rand - 2 times

If we add together the numeric values of these wins to see which currency has earned the most (in terms of numerical value alone) then we get the following figures;

  • Canadian Dollars - 94,871,105.68
  • Euro - 69,600,779.43
  • United States Dollars - 32,023,084.94
  • British Pounds - 26,067,738.87
  • New Zealand Dollars - 21,139,038.25
  • Australian Dollars - 13,432,454.12
  • South African Rand - 6,821,733.34

Now of course, this is a little like comparing apples to eggs to tins of soup using the different currencies so perhaps a better comparison would be to convert all the winnings above into a single currency so they can be directly compared. This gives us a very different outlook. We have decided to use the base currency of Mega Moolah, the British Pound for this calculation.

  • €69,600,779.43 - £59,710,123.38
  • CA$94,871,105.68 - £53,782,929.85
  • £26,067,738.87 - £26,067,738.87
  • US$32,023,084.94 - £18,155,798.06
  • NZ$21,139,038.25 - £10,935,038.06
  • AU$13,432,454.12 - £7,199,619.99
  • R6,821,733.34 - £355,428.92

As you can see, when we convert to British pounds, the Euro has paid out the most whereas the British pound is third on the list, leapfrogging US Dollar winners, even though there have been fewer British Pound wins. When you average out the total wins in British Pounds with the number of winners for each currency to find the average size of wins for each currency, it shows the following (for this calculation we have rounded the wins up or down to the nearest pound value):

  • British Pounds - £5,213,548 average win
  • Euro - £4,265,009 average win
  • Canadian Dollars - £3,841,638 average win
  • New Zealand Dollars - £2,733,759 average win
  • United States Dollars - £2,269,475 average win
  • Australian Dollars - £1,799,905 average win
  • South African Rand - £177,714 average win

In terms of average size of wins, British Pound winners tend to earn considerably more for their win than most, as do Euro and Canadian Dollar players. US Dollar players and Australian Dollar players do less well with South African Rand winners winning much smaller amount (due to the very weak currency in that country compared to the others).

Putting all this together, what do the stats say?

Looking at all the statistics together, they seem to suggest that your best chance of winning the Mega Moolah jackpot is to play on your mobile, using either Canadian Dollars or the Euro as your base currency. You should target your play in the spring, with a particular focus on the two-weeks in June from the 12th to the 24th. The 15th seems to be the best date to play, and you should focus your play from 20:00 on wards. And of course, you should play the original Mega Moolah, rather than the other games available.

However, as we know, Mega Moolah can be won at any time on any spin so while these statistics offer a guide to how things have gone in the past, they can't be used as a method to predict how the game will pay out in the future!
