Who was the big Mega Moolah winner on Betway?
If you have been looking through internet searches for Mega Moolah, then you will likely have come across the famous Betway Mega Moolah winner as part of your searches.
In this article, we are going to tell you the fabulous story behind this famous win and reveal just who the lucky Betway Mega Moolah millionaire actually is.
First up though, we need to learn a little about the Betway site. The site focuses predominantly on sports betting and is an internet-only betting site based in the UK. Alongside its sports betting service, Betway also runs a number of other sites and one of those offers slot games, including of course, Microgaming's fantastic Mega Moolah slot.
Back in October 2015, Betway had never hit the headlines for having a Mega Moolah winner before, but that was about to change in a big way when one customer of the site decided late one evening to try his luck playing £0.25p spins on Mega Moolah and hitting a £13m jackpot.
The Betway Mega Moolah winner
That man was Crewe-based ex-British Army soldier Jonathon Heywood and his story is all the more remarkable as his incredible win came just seven minutes after he had signed up and deposited cash into his Betway account.
The former soldier had spotted an advertisement for Betway and decided that he would take the plunge and register with the site. He logged in, filled in the details required and then made an initial deposit of £30 into his new account.
His first choice was to head over to play the Mega Moolah slot, which at that time in October 2015, had risen to the largest ever amount in the games history, a jackpot prize of over 13 million.
With the cash in his account, Jon decided to set his wager at the minimum bet level of 0.25 per spin and he began to play through his spins. Then seven minutes in, the incredible happened.
Jon triggered the Jackpot Bonus game very quickly into his session and he then clicked on the Spin button to set the wheel in motion. He could barely believe his eyes as the wheel came to rest on that single white section.
At 11.44pm on Tuesday 6th October 2015, just seven minutes after starting to play the slot, Jon Heywood became what was, at that time, the largest ever jackpot winner of the Mega Moolah slot. Not only that, but his win of £13,213,838.68 was later confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records as being the largest ever online slot progressive jackpot win.
"I couldn't believe that I'd won all this money at the time - and it still hasn't sunk in" stated Jon after news of his win went public a few days after.
After deciding to go public with the news, Jon had to hang fire on telling others about the win, so much so that on the Wednesday after his massive windfall, Jon turned in for work and acted as if nothing special had happened to him. It was only a few days later that his workmates learned of the truth of his massive slice of good fortune.
One heartwarming aspect to the story is that the win could not have come at a better time for Jon and his family. Still grieving after the recent passing of his grandfather, Jon's father was poorly and Jon was quick to point out that he would be using his newly acquired wealth for more than just frivolities.
"The first thing I will spend it on is the best possible medical treatment for my dad," he said following the win.
"That's more important than anything. Family comes first and I'd give all this money back for him to be healthy again."
Jon revealed that he planned to take his family on a luxury cruise around the Mediterranean and that he had planned to buy himself one thing that he had always wanted.
"I'm not trying to get carried away and I really don't know what else I'm going to buy with the money, apart from a Bentley." He told reporters.
"I never even dreamed of driving a Bentley, let alone owning one. I've got a Fiat Punto at the moment!"
Jon's story didn't end there however. In the months after his win, Jon set about changing his life in many ways. He was hugely generous to his family and in particular his best friend Mike Wright. In the past, the two former school friends had gambled together and always split their winnings to share in each others good fortune.
True to his word, Jon decided to give his best friend a slice of his fortune, a £4 million slice!
In addition to that, Jon has decided to use his money to move away from his old minimum wage job and instead, he has become a property developer, buying properties and then renovating them to either rent out to tenants, or to sell on at a profit to buyers. Jon is keen to ensure that his winnings, which are now safely banked or tied to investments, are not his sole source of income and that he can still earn his way as he has done in the past.
His work is particularly focused on disabled living, as Jon is passionate about helping those with disabilities lead as full and enjoyable a life as they can.
Jon's mum however has revealed his one extravagance that he should do away with.
"Just stop buying duvet covers, when you need to wash them," she told him in a documentary on the winner produced by Betway.

Incredibly, it may well be that Jon's World Record win could be no more. In September 2018, one anonymous player playing the slot in the Euro currency landed an €18,910,668.01 prize, which when converted at the time to British Pounds, was a slightly larger amount of money than even Jon won back in 2015. However, as the player has chosen to remain anonymous the Guinness World Records cannot ratify that win as the new record.
Jon Heywood's win as the 'Betway Mega Moolah winner' is a heartwarming story of good fortune, perfect timing and how to use your unexpected success to the benefit of others less fortunate than yourself.
