Who were the big Mega Moolah winners in 2018?

We may now be in 2019 and already celebrating the largest ever numerical win on the Mega Moolah slot in its history, thanks to the CA$20,059,287.27 million won by one lucky Canadian Mega Moolah player on the 30th January 2019.

In addition, we may also reckon that 2017 was a hotbed year for Mega Moolah winners, as the jackpot was triggered an incredible 13 times during those twelve months with only February not seeing a winner of the top prize and we also saw two incredible days, May 22nd 2017 and June 19th 2017, when the jackpot was won twice within the space of a few hours of each other.

Sandwiched in between these two halcyon years for the Mega Moolah slot is of course 2018 but it would be wrong to think that this year was the poor relation in Mega Moolah terms. When it comes to Mega Moolah winners 2018 produced more than its fair share and also could well have seen the largest ever Mega Moolah prize, in real cash terms, awarded too.

In this article we are going to examine the big wins of 2018, how the year went and how 2018 compared to other years in terms of Mega Jackpot wins and the amount that the game paid out.

With that in mind, we begin on January 1st 2018, just a few days after the final jackpot of 2017 had been claimed, a €4.27 million prize on the 18th December 2017 and it did not take long for the first winner of 2018 to come along.

  • January 14th 2018 - CA$3,688,145.24 winner

The first lucky winner of 2018 came at Zodiac Casino and the player used Canadian dollars as their currency to land a top prize of just over CA$3.68 million just a fortnight into the new year. They were the second winner in Canadian Dollars in the space of three jackpot triggers, with the winner on November 15th 2017 also landing their prize in the same currency.

Canada seemed to be the land of luck when it came to Mega Moolah as just a few weeks later, the jackpot was triggered for the 12th month in a row.

  • February 27th 2018 - CA$7,453,168.03 winner

The second bigger value winner of 2018 landed their prize around six weeks after the first winner of the year and during that time, the jackpot prize had climbed from its reset value up to a very healthy 7.4 million. This second winner landed their prize at 8pm European Standard Time and once again, like the winner in January, earned their prize in Canadian Dollars.

Furthermore, this was the sixth time in a row that the jackpot had been triggered by a mobile device (the last winner from a download onto a PC or Mac coming in August 2017). And this was a trend that was set to continue right the way through the year.

  • March 8th 2018 - €4,365,843.63 winner

One of the positive things about the Mega Moolah jackpot when it is won in currencies like the Canadian Dollar is that it does not reset back to the minimum amount of 1,000,000 as once the prize is converted from the base currency of British Pounds, into a Canadian Dollar value, there is usually plenty left in the pot to fund the next jackpot prize and so it proved as just over a week after the Feb 2018 win, we had another Mega Moolah winner.

This time the lucky player landed their prize playing via the Euro and playing at the popular Captain Cook's Casino (which incidentally, has one of the best sign up offers you are likely to find if you want to join a casino and start playing Mega Moolah) and they too won their prize playing via a mobile device.

This win made it 13 months in a row that the Mega Moolah jackpot had been triggered. Would that become extended to 14 months in a row, the longest ever run of monthly winners in the game's history, in April?

  • April 19th 2018 - US$5,691,921.42 winner
  • April 20th 2018 - £1,778,226.80 winner

The answer to that question was yes and in style too as April 2018 not only saw the 14th month in a row that the Mega Moolah jackpot had been landed, but it was also landed on consecutive days, with one winner on the 19th taking home over $5.6 million in US Dollars, followed by a British Pounds winner who pocketed £1.778 million.

While not a huge amount is known about the second winner in April, the first was playing at the popular Grand Mondial Casino, which offers 150 Chances to Win Mega Moolah for just £10/$10/€10 when you sign up at the casino. They landed their prize playing the minimum bet amount, which for them playing in US Dollars, was $0.25.

The second win occurred just over 24-hours following the first win in April, with the unnamed player landing their prize in British pounds, which meant that the jackpot prize fund had been emptied by this win and that it would now be reseeded with a £1,000,000 starting kitty by Microgaming.

  • June 24th 2018 - NZ$8,332,554.01 winner

May 2018 became the first month since February 2017 not to have a winner of the Mega Moolah jackpot but that meant that throughout the remainder of April following the 20th April win, all through May and then through most of June, the jackpot continued to grow and then on the 24th June, the sixth winner of 2018 claimed their prize.

This winner was the first winner since June 2017 to land their win in New Zealand dollars and the NZ$8.3 million plus prize. They became the fourth player using the currency to win the prize and this was the second-largest prize ever awarded to a winner in New Zealand Dollars, just a shade behind the NZ$10,144,395.82 won by Rawiri Pou back in June 2016.

This meant that a player winning in New Zealand Dollars had occurred in June in each of 2016, 2017 and 2018. What are the odds that this lucky run for New Zealand players will continue in 2019?

  • September 28th 2018 - €18,910,668.01 winner

The story behind the last record-shattering win of 2018 is an intriguing one. Following the win in June 24th, there was still plenty of cash left in the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot fund and through the summer months of July and August, the jackpot was not claimed meaning that it started to reach some very large amounts.

By early September 2018, the previous high-win figure of 13.2 million had been surpassed and as the jackpot grew in size, so more and more players began to play the game, which in turn increased the speed at which the jackpot was increasing.

Throughout September the jackpot continued to rise, and soon it had surpassed 18 million. It looked possible that it could reach 19 million but then on the 28th September with the jackpot prize at 18.9 million, one lucky player landed the prize playing at Grand Mondial Casino.

The winner claimed their victory in Euros, and at €18.9 million, that eclipsed the Euro value of Jonathon Heywood's Guinness World Record win of 2015, which equated to around €17,879,645 at the time of the win.

This was a massive win and put the cap on an incredible year of jackpot winners for Mega Moolah in 2018. Over the course of the year, the jackpot was paid out seven times, the second most amount of winners awarded in a single year and across 2018, Mega Moolah paid out over 50 million in various currencies to the jackpot winners alone (each taking home an average of 7.2 million in their played currency).

With 2019 already getting underway with an incredible winner of over CA$20 million on the 30th January 2019, many players are wondering if the Mega Moolah winners 2018 managed to produce, will be eclipsed by another raft of winners in 2019.

It's certainly going to be interesting to see how the year unfolds and how it compares to what was a memorable 2018.
