Wonder Woods is a medium variance slot offering a good mix of wins

Over the years, Just For The Win have been one of the more prolific of the software development companies that Microgaming have agreed deals with.

Fresh from the release of cracking slot games like Rockabilly Wolves, Ruby Casino Queen, Tweet Hearts, Reel Splitter and the popular and innovative Sidewinder slots, Just For The Win has been quick to release another game under the Microgaming agreement, Wonder Woods.

Released on the 20th February, this 20 pay line, 5x3 reel slot features stacked symbols on the reels, as well as an interesting bonus feature called Mystery Symbols, which is in play in both the base game and also the Free Spins bonus round. Wagers start at just 0.10 per spin, but you can ramp up the action considerably to 100.00 per game if you are a higher roller.

With a top jackpot prize of 400x your total bet, this isn't a slot that is going to offer you mega riches unless you bet a bit more money on each spin, but it is a more medium variance game, which means that you do get a nice mix of wins. As such, I feel this slot is more weighted in favour of lower to mid-stakes players.

Let's take a wander through the Wonder Woods to see if this magical glade can offer us an exciting spin or two.

Presentation

The first thing that really hits you with the Wonder Woods slot is, somewhat unusually, the music. It is a rather unusual tune to be honest, which does sound like it has been transported over from a 1990s, 8-bit game. That's not a bad thing necessarily, but for me it is just a little out of kilter with the more nature-inspired feeling of the slot.

The reels are transparent on the Wonder Woods slot which allows you to see the light dappled clearing in the Wonder Woods where the game takes place. Framed by trees, and with a very 'green' livery, the wheels are rather large and do dominate the screen, however that is not a bad thing, especially on smaller mobile screens and especially if, like me, your eyesight isn't what it once was!

The animations in the game are pretty standard, which means high quality as you would expect from Just For The Win and all the controls are generally to the right of the reels, but can move around if you change from landscape to portrait and vice versa on a mobile device.

What is on the reels?

There are a total of ten standard symbols on the reels, and eight of these are the standard symbols. The four lower value are the standard playing card symbols, the Jack, Queen, King and Ace and wins on these symbols range from 0.3x your total bet up to 4x your total bet.

The higher value symbols are the three different types of fruit, Cherry, Grapes and Orange and wins on these range from 0.40 up to 15x your total bet. The highest value symbol though is the Wonder Woods logo, which offers wins from 2.5x your total bet up to 20x your total bet.

If the win amounts seem small it should be noted that the symbols are stacked on the reels and as such, it is possible to win across more than one pay line.

Wild features

The Wild symbol in the game is easy to spot as it is simply the word Wild. It can appear across all five reels and it is used either as a substitute symbols for any of the standard symbols outlined below, or if you can land three, four or five of the Wilds across the reels, then you will win the same value prize as you would get as if you landed the Wonder Woods logo symbol (from 2.5x your bet up to 20x your bet).

The other symbol on the reel that acts similar to a Wild is the Mystery Symbol. This symbol is a box with a question mark in and it can land anywhere across the reels and can also be stacked. After a spin is concluded, any Mystery Symbols will turn into one of the standard symbols in the game, or the Wild (but not the Free Spins Scatter). This can then trigger additional wins to any that are already landed on the reels.

Free Spins features

There is also a Free Spins Scatter symbol on the reels and this can trigger a Free Spins bonus round if you land three or more of them across the reels. Depending on how many Scatters you land, you will earn yourself 8, 10 or 12 Free Spins.

During Free Spins, if you land a Mystery Symbol on the reels, they will turn into a Sticky Mystery symbol and will remain in place for your remaining free spins. If you can turn all three symbols on a reel into Sticky Mystery Symbols, then these will turn into Wilds for the remainder of your Free Spins bonus round.

Best feature of the Wonder Woods slot

Although this is a pretty straightforward game to play, Wonder Woods is put together very nicely but of all the features in the game I feel that the Free Spins bonus is the best, which is pretty much as it should be. Those Mystery Symbols being able to turn a reel Wild can pay some pretty big bonuses in this round and although I do like the way they work in the base game, I think the pay outs in Free Spins are more generous and a little more consistent.

Conclusion

The Wonder Woods slot is a great medium variance slot. By that I mean it offers a good mix of wins, but not a massive top end jackpot prize. It is most definitely suited to players at the lower to medium end of the wagering spectrum. The bonuses in the Wonder Woods slot work very well together rand the game is, as you would expect from a Just For The Win title, very polished and neatly done. This is a slot that is well worth a few spins but probably not one that you will keep coming back to time and time again.
