Your off to see the wizard in Microgaming’s Book of Oz slot!

A review of the Book of Oz slot by Triple Edge Studios for Microgaming

The Wizard of Oz is rightly regarded as one of the classic's of cinema, with Judy Garland in the role of Dorothy, her rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow remains one of the most iconic moments in cinema.

Although viewed as a children's film, the Wizard of Oz does have some very dark moments, including the terrifying flying monkeys who are the acolytes of the Wicked Witch of the West, not to mention the Witch herself, who certainly was the subject of more than a few childhood nightmares.

Given its iconic role in cinema, it is not surprising that the Wizard of Oz has been the inspiration behind many slots in its time and now there is a brand new one to enjoy. It is called the Book of Oz and it has been developed by the brains at Microgaming.

The slot focuses more on the land of Oz itself and its fabled Emerald City, than the characters in the original story and this 5-reel, 10 pay line slot can be played from just 0.10 per spin. So is this trip to the Wizard going to prove to be a magical slot experience, or is this a game which will fail to wield a magic spell over its playing public?

Let's take a closer look and find out.

Presentation

Set against the backdrop of the Emerald City, the Book of Oz takes a more cartoon style approach to the famous story and the graphics and sound has been nicely done, giving the game its own identity, rather than trying to copy other slots based on this familiar theme.

The animations and controls of the slot are easy to follow and nicely done, as you would expect from a high profile Microgaming release and the fact that you can play from just 0.10 a spin will ensure that the game appeals to the lower stakes gamer, as well as those who prefer to play for a bit more money on each spin.

The base game jackpot is 1,000x your stake, but that can increase during Free Spins up to 5,000x your stake, which is a considerable sum of money, especially if you are playing for a stake at the higher end of the scale.

What is on the reels?

The lower value symbols on the reels are the playing card symbols and they range from the 10 through to the Ace. These tend to offer lower value wins with the bigger wins only really possible if you land five of the symbols across one of the ten pay lines.

Higher value symbols include items such as keys, heart symbols and wizards and these offer generally better pay outs, although once again, the larger pays tend to be when you land four or five of the symbols across the reels, with the three symbols pays not being particularly appealing.

The slot has just one more symbol on the reels and that is the spell book symbol and this symbol serves a dual purpose as it acts as both the Wild symbol and also the Scatter symbol in the game.

One of the other key features of the slot is the ReSpin feature, which is available after every spin on the reels. You can select one reel to re-spin following a spin, for a set price. The more chances of your re-spin leading to you landing a sizeable win, the greater the cost of the re-spin will be. This is entirely a players choice bonus feature, meaning players can elect to use it if and when they wish, or disregard it completely.

Wild features

As a Wild symbol, you can use the Book symbol to replace any of the lower or higher value symbols on the reels to help create more or longer winning lines. The Wild symbol can trigger some of the better value wins in the base game, especially when it is landed more than once across the reels, so it is certainly something to look out for when playing the base game.

Free Spins features

To land the Free Spins bonus you need to land three or more of the book symbols across the reels in any position. Not only can this land you a better value win on a pay line, but it will also trigger the Free Spins bonus round.

Depending on whether you land three, four or five of the book symbols, you will unlock 10, 12 or the maximum initial 25 Free Spins. You can also re-trigger the feature from within the Free Spins bonus by landing three or more scatters across the reels and you can do this an unlimited amount of times if you are lucky enough.

During Free Spins, one symbol on the reels will be the expanding symbol. When you land this symbol on a reel during the bonus rounds, you will see the symbol expand to cover the entire reel. Land this on multiple reels and you can see several reels turn all to the same symbol, which can trigger some of the biggest value wins in the game, including the jackpot.

Best feature of the Book of Oz slot

There's no doubt that for me the best feature of the Book of Oz slot is the Free Spins bonus game. The fact you can re-trigger the bonus and land some sizeable wins in the process is great, but the Expanding symbol is the key to the bigger wins, especially if you can land this as a higher value symbol across several reels, then some of the wins really do start to justify why this is a higher variance slot.

Conclusion

The Book of Oz is a somewhat simple, but easy to follow higher variance slot. The ReSpin Bonus is a nice addition, but can quickly become expensive if used too often. The key to the bigger wins is the Free Spins bonus game and that expanding symbol, as that along with the Wilds can lead to some of the better value wins. The slot is easy to follow and while perhaps not blessed with huge amounts of variability in the game play, it is still an enjoyable higher variance slot.
